Zombie Apocalypse: Creation

Chapter 646: Test Samples

By the time it was noon, everyone was already up from their bed, sitting on a chair with the food already on the table.

"Sorry, honey, I didn't mean to make you work more after you just came back from work."

Leyan apologized as she slowly spooned a little bit of porridge from Yongyi's bowl into his mouth, with her separate bowl of rice barely touched at all.

"It's fine. I don't mind it. You guys like the food?"

All seven of them nodded in agreement, except Yuqi and Yueyue, who were also too busy feeding their baby with porridge.

"That's great to hear... Time for me to have a proper meal."

"M-Mommy! I'm full!" Qiaolan complained as she rejected the spoonful of porridge from Yueyue.

"You barely ate it. You promised Mommy Leyan earlier that you're going to eat it, didn't you?"

As Qiaolan reluctantly ate down the porridge, both Wuli and Shuli were a little taken aback by it.

"Do they really have to eat porridge? They looked full already."

Nami murmured, watching all three of the babies reluctantly eat down the porridge their mother fed them.

"They have to slowly phase into eating solid food... Xuanhua has to do the same when she gets older, too."

The moment Leyan said Xuanhua's name out loud, the baby in Nami's arm widened her eyes for a second before returning to normal.

"No need to force them to eat that much porridge... They are almost done with it anyway."

Xiaoyun suggested that after seeing all three of the babies start moving their heads away from the spoons.

"Just one more spoon."

After Yongyi took one big spoon of porridge, Leyan gently wiped his lip with a towel before carrying him back down to the kitchen floor.

"Careful, don't walk too fast when you finish eating."

Watching him bee-lining back to the living room to play with the toys, both Lianrong and Qiaolan felt a little jealous.

"M-Mommy! I-I want to go play!"

"One spoon."

Both Yuqi and Yueyue said out loud at the same time, their hand raising one big spoon of the porridge just like Leyan earlier.

The two babies both ate it down before their mother carried them back down as well, letting them walk back to the living room together.

"Why do babies hate porridge that much?" Kate curiously asked, unable to understand the reasoning behind it.

"You try eating it for a month or two, and you'll get bored just as fast as they do."

Leyan replied as she finally picked up her chopsticks, taking a small piece of braised pork from the plate.

"Never mind."

Kate immediately felt a chill traveling down her spine as her mind quickly thought back to the time Leyan cooked porridge for everyone as breakfast.

"Maybe it's time to add a few bits of meat and century eggs into the porridge," Shuli suggested as Wenwen peacefully slept in her arms.

"I told Xiaoyun to add them earlier... Actually, Xiaoyun, where are they? I don't see them in the porridge."

"I chopped them into very small bits. It's going to be hard to see it... You guys didn't notice the baby's mouth chewing a little?"

Seeing all three of the baby mothers shaking their heads, it made Xiaoyun question himself.

"Let me go get a bowl to check."

After getting a bowl of porridge from the pot and eating a few spoons of it, he quickly realized he might have chopped the pieces too small.

He could taste the differences from bland porridge, but his mouth could barely feel the chunk of meat he had put in.

"Okay, maybe I cut them a little too small. I'll leave them a little bigger next time."

"You better."

---

As Xiaoyun loaded the last few dirty dishes into the dishwasher, Lily and Tianci were wiping the table with a dish towel.

Kate and Anna were both still sitting in their seat in the kitchen, playing some sort of games on their phone.

The other six were all sitting on the sofa, with a pump attached to their chest, while their babies ran around in circles.

"Man, am I tripping, or was it like this before I left?" Xiaoyun murmured as he took a seat by Kate.

"What do you mean by 'this?'" Anna curiously asked as she gave him a short glance before looking back at her phone.

"The six of them pumping milk into a bottle while you guys sit here in the kitchen... The difference is that the babies are living in the living room."

"Well, maybe because they run out of milk every Sunday? Isn't that obvious?" Kate murmured as her eyes were glued to the phone.

"I guess..."

Just as Tianci and Lily finished wiping the table, the two of them sat down in their seat before looking a little bored.

"What are you two playing?" Lily curiously asked, moving over to the other side to sit right next to Kate.

"Battleship——Ha! Too easy."

"You just got lucky."

As Kate celebrated her victory over Anna, Xiaoyun was a little intrigued as he could see them playing a game together on the phone.

"Hey Kate, how did you guys play games on your phone? I thought there was no internet available."

"It's not the internet. Just an app that one of the workers made in their spare time. All it needs is two phones to be close enough."

"So like LAN?" Xiaoyun questioned.

"Yeah, similar to that."

"I see..."

Watching the two start another game, Xiaoyun didn't bother them any further. But Lily had completely different ideas.

"Sister Kate! Can you please help me install that app? I-I want to play too!" Lily pleaded as she held onto Kate's arm.

"Go ask Anna."

"Let me finish this game first. I'll teach you how to install it after."

"Yay!"

As Lily happily celebrated in excitement, Xiaoyun turned his attention over to Tianci, who had just been sitting there in silence, staring at the white wall.

"Tanci, you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine... Why do you ask that?"

"You looked a little zoned out... Is there something bothering you?"

Tianci paused for a second as she stopped looking at the wall, turning around to look back at Xiaoyun's face.

"I was just thinking about the flesh sample you brought to Wuli."

"Oh, right, I almost forgot about that thing. Has the result come out yet? What finding did you make?"

Tianci paused again as she looked over to the other three girls in the kitchen, who were too busy playing the game on their phones.

"Do you want to talk about it in private?" Xiaoyun asked again, noticing the worry on her face.

"It's fine as long as you don't mind it... We couldn't find anything about the samples. It's just way too complex."

"Too complex?"

Xiaoyun was a little surprised as he never expected her to look so defeated when she said it out loud.

"The sample is a complete mystery. There's no DNA structure or anything. Like, the thing shouldn't even exist or be alive at all."

The explanation confused Xiaoyun a little. In his mind, he could vividly remember seeing that sphere moving.

On top of the tentacles that move and Wuli's side of the story later on, everything in the fog seemed to be alive.

"If that thing isn't alive, how could it direct the tentacles to tie up those soldiers and consume them down to the skeletons?" Xiaoyun questioned.

"That's what all of us in the lab don't get. We couldn't get it through the PCR machine, no NGS, not even Mass spectrometry and Microscopy worked."

As Tianci's voice started to get more and more desperate, both Anna and Kate stopped tapping their phone.

"So it's something that isn't from Earth?"

"I... I don't know. It might be... Whatever sphere you guys manage to kill, there's nothing on earth that's remotely related to it."

The answer became the final nail in the coffin as Xiaoyun's mind had already determined the flesh matter to be of alien origin.

"As long as it can't pose a threat anymore, it's all good... That thing hasn't tried to reanimate itself or anything, right?"

With Tianci nodding her head, Xiaoyun let out a small sigh of relief. It was the one worry he had.

He could still remember how the tentacles almost just kept appearing near the sphere when it died.

At the same time, his mind quickly realized that the fog and the sphere might not be as directly related as he had imagined.

"Oh, I almost forgot to tell you this, I managed to find the source of the thing that was causing all the fog."

"Really?"

The depressed look on Tianci's face instantly vanished. In its place was curiosity and a hint of genuine shock.

"Yes, really. How else would I return home so early in the morning? I would never leave a job unfinished.

You should see that red liquid by tomorrow morning in your lab. Trust me. You're going to be blown away by how that thing works——"

"Mhm, big hero over here talking about secrets with Tianci and not telling us about it."
