Chapter 28: Reunion After a Long Separation
After Ireya ordered the camp to be set up, Thomas took a squad to patrol near the camp.
Alfred, the Guardian Knight of Miss Rabbit, was already quite old, and the young girl worried about his ability to handle physical strain, so she mostly didn't take him to battles anymore, only keeping the old knight stationed in Rock Snow City.
Hence, the heavy responsibility of protecting Ireya fell onto Thomas's shoulders. He dared not be careless, especially now that the young girl had become queen. Once other factions found it difficult to defeat Ireya on the front lines, it was hard not to harbor sinister intentions.
Historically, the battle for royal power has always been brutal, never lacking in various sordid means.
Thomas carefully searched around the lake twice but didn't find anything suspicious, people or things, and returned to the camp before dark.
By this time, most people had finished their dinner, but knowing that Thomas and his team were out patrolling, the cook saved food for them.
This consisted of half a loaf of brown bread, one sausage, and a bowl of boiled beans. From Ireya to the ordinary militia, they ate the same food, but officers could receive an extra cup of honey wine.
These foods were mostly provided by the Lilani couple because transporting them directly from the western region was too costly.
Thomas carried his wooden platter back to his tent, planning to sleep after dinner, but unexpectedly, just as he entered the tent, he felt a cold sensation under his throat.
An assassin?!
Shock gripped Thomas's heart, unable to discern the assassin's appearance, only feeling something silently dart behind him, followed by a dagger pressing against his throat.
At that moment, every hair on the body of the Guard Captain stood on end; he couldn't believe that there was an assassin capable of sneaking into the camp silently under so many watching eyes.
His first reaction wasn't to worry about his safety but the fear that this terrifying assassin might find their way to Ireya.
However, at least four guards regularly accompany Miss Rabbit, leaving her alone only when she sleeps, and even then, a guard remains outside the door.
As this assassin chose to confront him first, it indicated that they were unsure about breaking through the defenses around Ireya.
Upon realizing this, Thomas felt slightly reassured, and then he heard a somewhat familiar voice.
"Long time no see, Sir Thomas."
"You are... Selena?" The Guard Captain's pupils suddenly contracted.
"Since we parted, I've imagined many scenarios of our reunion, but I didn't expect to greet you in this manner," Selena said softly.
Thomas's mind worked quickly, and he said in a deep voice, "Did Allister and Cornelia send you here? Are you here to assassinate Lord Ireya?"
"If I say I came here just to see you, would you believe me?"
"I might have loved you once, but don't take me for a fool."
"Once?" Selena seemed dissatisfied with those words.
"That was your choice. I asked if you would return to the western region with me and believe in Saturday. You refused."
"That's not a fair choice at all. Why couldn't you follow me and believe in Valria?" Selena protested.
"Because I am a knight; my honor is my life. I will never betray Lord Ireya and Prophet Merlin," Thomas said solemnly.
"I'm just a woman, but that doesn't mean I don't understand betrayal is wrong, Lord Knight," Selena said.
"Then we are enemies."
"You have a lot of courage, Lord Knight, saying that while my knife is at your throat. Aren't you worried I'll kill you?"
"Like you said, the knife is in your hand; you can act anytime," Thomas said calmly.
"But if you're thinking of holding me to make me do something for you or approach Sir Ireya, I advise you to give up early."
"I didn't expect your stubborn head to help me," Selena sighed, reaching for the honey wine from Thomas's platter.
"Don't worry, I won't force you to do anything you don't want to do."
"Actually, I'm not lying to you; I came just to see you."
"Is that so? Then why don't you let me turn around? You can look at me properly."
"Because I'm no match for you," Selena said, "You're more ruthless to me than I am to you. I'm worried you'll catch me and present me to your queen unless... you promise not to act against me."
"I can promise you that." Thomas didn't hesitate long before replying.
"Alright, then close your eyes," Selena said.
At those words, Thomas closed his eyes. Soon, he heard a dull thud beside his ear—the sound of the wooden wine cup hitting the ground.
At the same time, the cold feeling on the Guard Captain's throat disappeared. He quickly opened his eyes, turning to look behind him, but there was no one else in the tent.
Thomas lifted the tent flap, just in time to see a patrol of guards arriving in front of his tent.
Thomas asked if they had seen anyone leaving his tent, and upon receiving no for an answer, he wasted no time ordering the camp to be sealed off and quickly headed outside Miss Rabbit's tent.
The good news was Ireya remained safe and sound, as the young girl was discussing the next march route with Kaden and Duren, looking surprised upon hearing that an assassin had infiltrated the camp.
But learning that the assassin was an old acquaintance—Selena, she was not so surprised anymore.
Selena belonged to the Priest of Cornelia and had awakened her bloodline, enabling her to use special methods to conceal herself. Ireya had previously witnessed her skills, only catching her thanks to the sensor given by Li Yu.
Though Thomas quickly sealed the camp, preventing anyone from entering or leaving, Miss Rabbit estimated it would be challenging to find Selena.
The truth indeed was that when the Guard Captain searched the camp thoroughly with his men, they found nothing.
Yet Thomas kept frowning, knowing Selena wouldn't have come to camp just to see him, exchange a few words, and leave quietly without doing anything.
Ireya said, "Maybe you're overthinking her. She might have just wanted to see you."
After all, Miss Rabbit was just like that: a few days without seeing Li Yu made her restless, uninterested in work, wanting to indulge, causing trouble.
Selena and Thomas hadn't seen each other for almost two years; she must have felt intensely.
The Guard Captain found himself uncertain after Ireya's words.
It was then that Kaden spoke up, asking, "Did she ask you any questions or give you anything during this visit?"
