Chapter 66: The Source of Unease
"On the other side of this stele lies the Abyss Prison." Edwin stood shoulder to shoulder with Hewinia. "By the way, how on earth did you wake up?"
Hewinia glanced at Edwin, "It seems you weren't too keen on my awakening."
"Hey, hey, hey, don't be like that, we've made it this far; what's the point in doubting each other?" Edwin raised his hands in surrender, "I'm just really curious, you weren't supposed to wake up so easily, not being an Eternal Nightmare Apostle."
Hewinia asked, "What exactly is this Divine Stele all about?"
"You should have experienced it just now." Edwin said, "As its name suggests, the Microsleep Divine Stele, it's designed to put you to sleep."
"But it's more than that, right?"
"Of course it's more than that, because once you fall asleep, you'll never wake up again." Edwin pointed behind her, "Turn around and you'll see."
Hewinia turned around and discovered the path she had come along was littered with skeletons.
These skeletons weren't all human, many were from animals, and they lay piled upon the yellow sand, their postures suggesting a slumbering state.
She also saw three human female skeletons, ranging from small to large, which instantly reminded her of the three figures urging her to stay within her dreams.
Sleep a little, then remain eternally within a dream?
During this time, Hewinia hadn't reacted at all; she didn't even know when she fell asleep.
This is the power of the gods.
"Unless you've been specially trained, you're uncontrollable in a dream." Edwin said, "You'll forget your mission, forget who you are, and with just a little guidance from others, you can easily be lost. It's called Microsleep, but in a dream a brief sleep could mean your real body's already decomposed, and by then, even if you wish to awaken, it would be too late."
"But you weren't affected."
"Of course not, I am an Eternal Nightmare Apostle, entering a dream feels like coming home to us. We've long known how to maintain ourselves in dreams." Edwin shrugged, "So for an Eternal Nightmare Apostle, this Divine Stele has nearly no impact. I originally planned to cross and wake you from your dream after entering. But I didn't expect you to wake up so quickly... So, the one who should be asking how is me, not you."
Hewinia replied nonchalantly, "Perhaps my recent sleep quality hasn't been very good."
Tsk, what a dismissive explanation — this is truly the creation of the gods, and you make it sound like a cheap sleeping pill.
Edwin grumbled inwardly but didn't voice it, assuming that part of the corpse blocks within Hewinia had activated again.
It's not necessarily a bad thing; for direct infiltration into the prison, the stronger Hewinia is, the more advantageous it is for him.
"So, what's next?" Hewinia asked, "Can we just pass through this Divine Stele?"
"It's not that simple." Edwin raised his hand, pointing at the magic talisman on the Microsleep Divine Stele, "Do you see those? All the magic power within the talismans is artificially provided by the Guardians of the Contract Land; it has never been severed for a thousand years."
"Where are these Guardians?"
"Right behind this Divine Stele," Edwin said, "if we rashly go through the stele, we'll be noticed by those Guardians immediately."
"Then should we deal with those Guardians first?"
"It's not that simple." Edwin shook his head, "Dealing with the Guardians would disrupt the magic power supply to the stele; once the supply is interrupted, the stele will stop functioning. If any of the four Divine Steles stop functioning, it will be noticed, and our infiltration will fail. Although you are very strong, I don't think you're strong enough to handle the entire Abyss Prison."
"Rest assured, if you really want me to do that, I'll kill you immediately and head home," Hewinia responded coldly.
"Hey, don't be so straightforward; have a little trust in me." Edwin said with a chuckle, "Since I'm here, I'm prepared. Without preparation, crossing the stele usually means brute force, but the Microsleep Divine Stele is an exception. Its essence is a dream, and I just happen to be the world's most adept Dream Scholar — you understand my meaning?"
Hewinia was silent, only taking out her Magic Wand.
"Alright, alright, I'll be plain." Edwin surrendered again, "The Guardians utilize the Microsleep Divine Stele to influence the outside world, but it can likewise be used in reverse."
Hewinia frowned slightly, "You mean you can reverse influence the Guardians inside?"
"Yes."
"This is a creation of the gods, is it so readily cracked by you?"
"I'm not cracking the Divine Stele," Edwin said, "but although the steles are fundamentally weapons crafted by the gods and lack a stance, they can indeed be seized. To be clear, my approach is limited to the Microsleep Divine Stele; I don't understand the other three Divine Steles."
Hewinia nodded slightly but said nothing more. Edwin's words made her realize the sealing of the Contract Land wasn't as impenetrable as the outside world imagined.
Ultimately, the Contract Land is maintained jointly by the Eight Great Churches, with personnel, power, and technology.
It means if you find the right people, every seal can be cracked? Just like Edwin may crack the Microsleep Divine Stele of the Lord of Eternal Nightmare, could there be similar methods to crack the other three steles, only Edwin doesn't know them?
