Who hid My Corpse!

Chapter 757: The Source of Unease (Part 2)

This is indeed possible.

But looking at it from another angle, the Abyss Prison's magical barriers have gathered the technologies of the Eight Great Churches. It's already the limit for ordinary people to break through one or two; wanting to decrypt them all requires the Eight Great Churches joining forces, which is simply impossible.

Therefore, the Abyss Prison can indeed be seen as an unbreakable sealing place.

"To what extent can you do it?" Hewinia asked.

"Reverse the sleep of the guardians inside and then enter," Edwin said. "Before the next batch of people change shifts, no one will notice that during this time, the Microsleep Divine Stele is only nominally operational; it's actually already ineffective. This time is enough for us to reach the depths of the Abyss Prison. Rest assured, I know this route too. When my student returned, I saw his memories clearly."

"And then?"

"And then... only Heaven knows," Edwin shrugged. "I can only guarantee uncovering the barriers set by the Lord of Eternal Nightmare, and you have the Seven Notes, which theoretically can uncover those of the Holy Sound Master. Adding the two of us together, optimistically, we should be able to break through a quarter of the barriers."

"It's only a quarter?"

"Only a quarter," Edwin said, "and that's not considering the barriers that don't belong to the technology of the Eight Great Churches; a quarter is already the most optimistic estimate. Just think, I am the most outstanding Dream Scholar of Eternal Nightmare, and you are the only Seven Notes in a thousand years of the Holy Sound. Together, we can only achieve a quarter, whereas for others, the chance is zero."

Hewinia looked at Edwin: "You seem to be mistaken, according to your words, we only have the potential to break a quarter of the barriers, not a quarter probability to reach the end. When faced with barriers that can't be decrypted but are right in front of us, we simply can't get past them."

"I know that, of course."

"What should we do if we encounter such a situation?"

"What else can be done?" Edwin spread his hands, "Either break through it, or accept our fate; we only have this choice left. We have no way back, don't we? We must go to the end."

Hewinia didn't speak, but she understood, Edwin was mentally prepared long ago, this mission will have only two outcomes.

Either break through all obstacles and reach the deepest place, or die without a resting place. And from the current perspective, the former is almost impossible.

He truly is a madman.

"What we are doing is not a trivial matter," Edwin seemed to see what Hewinia was thinking, "For thousands of years, not to mention opening the Abyss Prison, outsiders have been unable to even approach it. Our arrival here can already be said to have created history, isn't it?"

Hewinia said flatly: "I never imagined you would be such a proactive person."

"Don't forget I'm a scholar." Edwin leaned back against the Microsleep Divine Stele and sat down, then input his magic power into the stele behind him, "And a rather bold one at that."

With that, his head tilted, and he fell asleep like that.

On the Microsleep Divine Stele behind him, a different kind of magic power swiftly mixed into the spell. If Hewinia hadn't been constantly watching, she wouldn't have caught this change.

The invasion has begun.

Hewinia raised her head, gazing at the endless Divine Stele as if a tiny ant attempting to shake a giant tree.

Is it truly possible for mortals to shake the divine?

Hewinia couldn't help but wonder.

At this moment, her peripheral vision inadvertently caught a faint glimmer, and she instinctively turned to look.

Then she saw a distant star, which should appear at night, absurdly hanging in the evening glow.

...

The Prison Director abruptly opened his eyes as if waking from a nightmare.

"You're awake, old buddy," a leisurely voice echoed beside the Prison Director's ear. He turned his head and saw a rotten corpse smiling at him, causing him to startle, "Ruer, what are you doing here?"

After asking, the Prison Director recalled something.

"Ah, I indeed asked you to come."

"That's correct, you asked me to come chat with you, yet just after a few words, you fell asleep," Ruer, the Envoy from the Netherworld, continued displaying his decaying grin, "Your soul still hasn't recovered, Sinde."

"...It's been a long time since someone called me by that name," the Prison Director said solemnly, "I nearly forgot."

"You've been alone too long, Sinde," Ruer said, "Or rather, you've been shackled by these duties for too long; the Abyss Prison seals not only Visas, but also you."

The Prison Director didn't speak, simply gazing out the window.

Dusk was approaching.

"How long was I unconscious?" the Prison Director asked.

"About an hour,"

"Was anything happening during that time?"

"If there were, I would have woken you up," Ruer said, "Now the entire camp has few people left; the Star Relic delegation has left, and the delegations from other churches have temporarily departed, but this is also at your request."

"This is my request?" The Prison Director pondered for a moment, "Ah, it seems there is such a thing."

"You're hoping that Isaiah can carry out his task," Ruer inquired, "But do you truly believe he can meet your expectations?"

"Whether he fulfills my expectations is irrelevant," the Prison Director replied, "I'm simply eliminating the last bit of risk."

"Indeed, when concerning matters involving Visas, you're always so cautious."

"Because he is Visas," the Prison Director was speaking when he felt a piercing pain deep in his mind, prompting him to cradle his head; the chain of the sealing dragged on the ground, emitting a sharp sound. "No matter how prudent, it's never sufficient... uh, I remembered why I called you here. Ruer, I feel something's wrong with my state."

"What's wrong?"

"I feel terrible," the Prison Director said softly, "Ever since that guy tore me apart the night before last, I've felt terrible."

"It's a normal reaction, considering your soul was torn," Ruer said, "And I forcibly summoned your soul back; feeling discomfort is normal."

"But I still feel something's off," the Prison Director said, "Ruer, in this aspect, you're an expert. Can you sense any abnormalities in my soul?"

"Why do you feel that way?"

"I always feel my soul isn't pure anymore, like there's something else."

"Something else? Your soul was specially processed by the Master; I can't check it," Ruer shook his head. "But you can self-check, have you forgotten? If you suspect there's something wrong with your soul, ponder over whether your recent actions match your memory of yourself."

"Match my memory of myself?"

"Yes, the soul isn't the body; it doesn't get sick; most of the time, it's stable like a glass of water. If you feel obvious discomfort, there's only one possibility."

"What?"

"Your soul no longer belongs to you, or at least part of it doesn't," Ruer said, "Just like during summoning, you must ensure there is only one soul nearby because if someone else's soul is summoned and mixed with yours, then you're no longer entirely yourself. In such a situation, the best test is to recall your recent actions to see if they align with your memory of yourself. Do you think you do?"

Recent actions?

The Prison Director strained to recall.

Following his soul's return, the only actions he's taken involve the series of actions targeting Isaiah.

This included using Heavenly Voice Obedience to corner Isaiah into dire straits, making the delegations from other churches leave to allow Isaiah to act freely without unexpected incidents.

Everything was normal, everything seemed like actions he would conduct.

Yet why does he constantly feel something's amiss, something discomforting?

Is there something he's forgotten?

At this point, a sudden alarm echoed throughout the camp.

The Prison Director hadn't yet reacted when Carter rushed in, shouting.

"Pardon me, Prison Director! The Abyss Prison has been invaded by the Star Relic! The Ice Curse Divine Stele has been broken!"

"Please immediately activate the Heavenly Sound Obedience!"
