Chapter 260: The Legend of the Dragon Balls
Seeing her father's stunned expression, Xu Xialing repeated,
"I found a way to bring Mother back to life."
Xu Wenwu's hands trembled as he gripped her shoulders, his voice urgent.
"Tell me — what method?"
Xialing winced, her voice pained.
"Father, you're hurting me."
Wenwu released her, settling back into his chair. He spoke slowly.
"After your mother passed away, I wandered in despair for many years.
When you both ran away from home, I longed more than anything to speak with your mother again… to bring her back.
I sent the Ten Rings across the globe to gather every scrap of information for my research. I studied the legends of Western vampires and werewolves, explored the pyramids of ancient Egypt, and chased down the tales of the pharaohs.
I even traveled to the legendary Kunlun — yet I found no trace of resurrection anywhere.
Right now, I've been investigating your mother's old village. When she and I fell in love, we considered staying there, but the villagers saw me as unworthy and drove me out. With no choice, your mother left with me, giving up her powers in the process.
If she hadn't lost her power… she wouldn't have died at the hands of those people…"
Hearing that their father had spent all these years searching for a way to bring their mother back, both Xialing and Shangqi were struck with guilt. They had never truly understood him, never supported him, and had done little to help in this quest. In fact, Xialing had held her own motives during the last Dragon Ball tournament.
Xialing took a breath.
"Father, the way to bring Mother back is with the Dragon Balls. We need to gather all seven."
"Dragon Balls?" Wenwu repeated, frowning.
"I know Kunlun's Shou Lao — he's a dragon. I visited him once, but even he couldn't bring your mother back. If someone had just died, he could resurrect them for a price… but after so many years, even Shou Lao cannot do it."
Both siblings were shocked — there really was a dragon in Kunlun? This world was even stranger than they imagined.
Xialing shook her head.
"Father, the dragon you speak of has nothing to do with the Dragon Balls I'm talking about."
She pulled out a tablet, showing him photos of the seven Dragon Balls.
"These are the Dragon Balls. They're numbered from one to seven stars. Gather them all, pass the League of Assassins' wish review, and you can summon the Shenlong (Divine Dragon), who will grant one wish to the summoner."
Wenwu narrowed his eyes at the image on the screen.
"Tell me everything about these Dragon Balls — and why you believe they're real, not just a trick by the League of Assassins."
Xialing told him everything, from how she first obtained a Dragon Ball, to giving it up in exchange for a promise to John Wick, who later gathered all seven under the League's guidance and made his wish.
John Wick's wish had been to resurrect his deceased wife — and Xialing had collected evidence that this woman had indeed died and been buried, with hospital and funeral records to prove it. Yet she was alive now, living within the League of Assassins.
She went on to describe the second appearance of the Dragon Balls — the visions of them in her mind, her gaining entry into the tournament through a promise, and how both she and Shangqi fought but ultimately lost.
She also explained that the Dragon Balls were considered holy relics of the League, and that the wisher's desire had to pass the League's review before being granted — the Dragon Balls were, in essence, a rare opportunity they released to the world.
Upon hearing this, especially their failure in the tournament, Wenwu's anger boiled over — he slammed his palm down and shattered the solid wood table in front of him.
The siblings flinched, their guilt deepening. If Wenwu had participated, the chances of victory would have been much greater.
Wenwu composed himself.
"Forgive me… I lost my temper. But you understand why I want to bring your mother back."
"You said last time Iron Man Tony Stark, the Hulk, and the vampire Selene all took part — and the winner was Selene, the elder of the vampire clan?"
Both nodded.
"Yes, Father."
"Do you know what her wish was?" he asked.
Xialing shook her head.
"We don't know, but her wish was definitely granted — the Shenlong appeared without a doubt.
Not long after the tournament ended, the world was plunged into global night. I suspect it was connected to her wish.
But there's something else: John Wick said the League doesn't force wishers to join them. Yet I know John Wick is a League member, and the vampire clan has also joined. They're the only two I know who have made wishes."
Wenwu rubbed his temples.
"The League of Assassins… that's the group founded over a thousand years ago in Europe. Back then, they had no Dragon Balls.
Still — if they can bring your mother back, then joining them is no issue."
Long ago, Wenwu had heard of the League and even visited them out of curiosity, but they hadn't impressed him. In his prime, Europe was considered a barbaric land by the East — barely worth notice.
"I hear their leader now is Smith Dole, famous in the outside world?"
Xialing nodded, then explained what she knew about Smith — known as "God" to some.
Wenwu chuckled.
"A superhuman… a god among men. Sounds troublesome.
But it doesn't matter. I believe few in this world can withstand the Ten Rings. Prepare — I'll pay him a visit and borrow the Dragon Balls."
At those words, Xialing's heart sank. She knew this could end badly and quickly tried to dissuade him.
