Chapter 259: A Way to Bring Mother Back to Life
Trident Tower.
In the director's office, Nick Fury read through the mission report Coulson had submitted. The information matched closely with the intelligence he had received from his wife, with no major discrepancies — though the section on the League of Assassins rated them a bit higher than he had expected.
Closing the report, Fury asked,
"Coulson, what's your take on the Asgardians? Are they gods, or aliens?"
Coulson thought for a moment before replying,
"Sir, I believe they're aliens with incredibly long lifespans.
With the technology we have now — combined with the powers of certain extraordinary individuals — if we traveled back to ancient times and played it right, we could easily be worshiped as gods."
Fury nodded in satisfaction. Although his wife had confirmed they were indeed Asgardians, in his eyes they were simply a powerful alien race with long lifespans. As far as he was concerned, "gods" didn't exist.
"You're right. They're aliens — just… special ones.
Now, I have two tasks for you. First, arrange for an agent to bring Dr. Erik back here. We need him to study the Tesseract.
With more superpowered beings appearing and the arrival of the Asgardians, we need countermeasures. The Tesseract is an object of infinite energy, and Dr. Erik's research overlaps with it in many ways. His expertise is essential.
The second task: I need you to meet with Smith Dole. Try to recover a portion of the Iron Giant's remains from him. At the very least, bring back one large enough for us to study."
Coulson nodded.
"Understood, sir. I'll have Dr. Erik brought in immediately, and then I'll head to the League of Assassins' base."
Fury gave a curt nod, and Coulson excused himself.
Leaving the office, Coulson immediately called Sitwell, who was overseeing cleanup operations in a small town in Mexico, instructing him to bring Dr. Erik to New York as quickly as possible for a meeting with the director.
After contacting Sitwell, Coulson got into his car and drove straight toward the League of Assassins' base.
…
Meanwhile.
After a period of rest and discussion, Xu Xialing piloted a helicopter with her brother, Xu Shangqi, returning to their former home.
At the Ten Rings' headquarters, Xu Wenwu was informed by his subordinates that an unregistered helicopter had just landed on the grounds.
"Go see who it is."
The helicopter touched down smoothly in the courtyard. Xu Shangqi and Xu Xialing stepped out, immediately surrounded by a ring of Ten Rings soldiers. At the front stood the Masked Warrior.
Upon seeing them, the Masked Warrior called out,
"Young Master, Young Lady — you've returned."
At his words, the soldiers lowered their weapons. The Masked Warrior ordered a nearby warrior to inform the leader that the Young Master and Young Lady had come back.
Looking at him, Shangqi said,
"I'm surprised you recognized us so easily after all these years."
The Masked Warrior replied,
"I was your martial arts instructor. How could I not recognize you both?"
Xialing stepped forward.
"Is my father here? We need to speak with him."
"He's here. I've already sent someone to tell him you've returned," the Masked Warrior replied.
The siblings nodded and followed him into the manor.
Seeing the unchanged grounds after so many years, both Shangqi and Xialing felt a wave of nostalgia.
In his study, Xu Wenwu was poring over research about Ta Lo when a soldier entered.
"Leader, the Young Master and Young Lady have returned."
Hearing this, Xu Wenwu set down his book, glanced at a photo of himself and his wife on the desk, and stood up to leave.
In the sitting room, Shangqi and Xialing were alone.
"Xialing… maybe we came too early. Perhaps we should wait for the next Dragon Ball Tournament to speak to Father—"
Xialing shook her head.
"Wait until the next one? By the time we fly back and convince him, the tournament will already be over."
"I just worry he'll clash with the organizers," Shangqi sighed.
"After Mother's death, Father became so domineering… he doesn't listen to reason anymore."
At that moment, Xu Wenwu entered.
"Since the day you both ran away, this is the first time you've returned.
The Masked Warrior says you have something to discuss with me. What is it? Did someone bully you?"
Neither sibling responded immediately, struck by how their father wasn't scolding them for leaving, but instead speaking calmly.
Xu Wenwu sat down, smiling warmly.
"What's wrong? Have you grown distant from your father?"
Shangqi hesitated, unsure how to begin, but Xialing spoke up first.
"Father, we weren't bullied out there."
Xu Wenwu smirked.
"Of course you weren't. I heard you started the Golden Dagger Club in Hong Kong, and it's doing well.
But Shangqi… I was disappointed to hear you're working as a valet at some hotel. That truly surprised me."
Both siblings were startled.
"You knew where we were?"
"You're my children," Wenwu said with the same calm smile. "Even if you run away, I won't abandon you completely."
At first, Wenwu had been furious when they left. After his wife's death, he had been lost, desperate to mold his son into greatness — but under that pressure, the boy chose to flee.
When both children left in turn, he had time to reflect. Finding them later, he didn't drag them back — instead, he left subordinates to watch over and protect them from the shadows, while he returned to headquarters to study his wife's homeland and search for a way to bring her back.
"So? Why have you come this time?"
Xialing's expression turned serious.
"We've found a way to bring Mother back."
Wenwu shot to his feet, shock flashing in his eyes.
"What did you just say?"
