When Dragon Balls Descend Upon Marvel

Chapter 248: The Destroyer Arrives

As Thor finished explaining the matter of the Dragon Balls to Sif and the others, all four were taken aback.

"Heavens… Midgard actually has such a divine artifact? I've never even heard of it."

Sif nodded in agreement.

"I've never seen anything about it in any records concerning Midgard. Does it really exist?"

Thor turned to Darcy Lewis. Under the expectant gazes of everyone, Darcy explained,

"I don't know if it's true or not.

I just happened to come across this information — at first, I thought I was dreaming.

"But recently, I found out that someone is buying these Dragon Balls for extremely high prices."

Thor looked back at the four.

"If someone is spending large sums to buy Dragon Balls, then it means they have value.

"As for whether they're real, we'll know once we gather them."

Sif then asked the critical question:

"Thor, how are we supposed to search for these Dragon Balls in Midgard?"

At that, Thor fell silent. He truly didn't know where to start.

Elsewhere.

Coulson, accompanied by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and Smith Dole, arrived at the location where an energy signature had been detected. On the ground, there were charred marks covered in dense, unfamiliar symbols.

"Smith, do you recognize these characters?"

Looking at the marks left by the Bifröst, Smith Dole couldn't tell if they were Asgardian script or runes. He shook his head.

Seeing this, Coulson turned to Sitwell.

"Go get a few language experts to take a look."

Sitwell walked toward the car to contact the base.

Just then, the clear sky above suddenly filled with swirling black clouds, spinning at high speed. Coulson and the others didn't know what to make of it — they simply looked upward.

In the town, Thor and the others also sensed the disturbance.

Darcy looked at the changing sky.

"Is someone else coming?"

With a deafening crash, the Destroyer descended onto Earth.

Seeing it, Smith Dole felt a bit helpless. He had come here to retrieve Mjolnir, yet before even seeing the hammer, the Destroyer had arrived first.

Sitwell, staring at the towering steel giant, glanced at Coulson and Smith Dole in confusion.

"Is this Iron Man… or Whiplash?"

Coulson looked to Smith, who replied,

"Ivan doesn't have this type of armor, and Tony's never shown anything like it. So no — it's not them."

Coulson picked up a loudspeaker and approached.

"Hello!

"You're using unregistered advanced weapons technology — please identify yourself."

As the Destroyer's faceplate shifted open slightly, Coulson relaxed.

"Alright, looks like it's fine."

But suddenly, the Destroyer's body glowed red-hot from within. Coulson instantly sensed danger and shouted,

"Run!"

He bolted for the cars.

Smith Dole shook his head. Loki's control over the Destroyer was crude at best. With a move, he rescued all the agents before the attack landed.

Once safe, Coulson looked at the retreating metal giant.

"Aren't we going to stop that thing?"

Smith replied,

"Let's see what it's after. Clearly, you're not the target."

Without anyone blocking it, the Destroyer marched toward the town. With no attacks made against them, the agents saw no reason to engage.

Thor and the others stepped out into the street, looking toward the disturbance.

"Jane, you need to leave now," Thor told her.

"What about you?" she asked.

"I'm staying."

Fandral spoke up immediately.

"Thor will fight with us."

Clearly, Sif and the Warriors Three didn't know that Odin had sealed Thor's powers. At this moment, Thor was just a mortal — one who could be taken down by a taser.

Thor walked up to Fandral.

"I'm only flesh and blood now. My father sealed away all my strength. In this state, I might get you killed.

"But I can help evacuate the townspeople, get them somewhere safe."

Jane added,

"If you're staying, then so am I."

"We'll need time," Thor said.

"You'll have it," she replied.

Dr. Erik Selvig, Jane, Thor, and Darcy began running to the shops and into the crowds, warning residents of the danger and urging them to flee and take shelter.

Meanwhile, in Asgard, Odin lay in bed, feigning the Odin Sleep while Frigga cared for him.

"Do you really mean to go through with this?" she asked.

"Will Loki even understand your intentions?"

Odin said nothing. His spirit watched Loki's every move, and he felt disappointed. Though he'd never planned to give Loki the throne, he had left Asgard in his adopted son's hands as a test.

But what had Loki done? He had taken the Casket of Ancient Winters, frozen Heimdall, and deployed the Destroyer to Earth — all just to prevent Thor's return. It was enough to make Odin's heart sink.

He knew well the power of the Destroyer. Thankfully, Loki was only controlling it remotely and not wearing the armor himself, which left Odin with room to intervene if necessary. He would step in before Loki could kill his brother — and he hoped this ordeal would help Thor grow into the man he needed to be.

Loki, unaware of his father's watchful gaze, believed that stopping Thor's return would secure him the throne of Asgard. Seated on the throne with Gungnir in hand, he scanned for his brother through the Destroyer's eyes.

Cars and houses in his path were destroyed without hesitation. Anyone who stood in his way was obliterated. As for bystanders who did not attack, they were beneath his notice — like ants.
