CH164-Illial, the cardinal of faith and devotion.
"What?!" Nova roared as he bolted up from his seat, rushing towards Samael as he grabbed the paper out of his hand. Scanning everything as Samael did, Nova's eyes began to tremble.
"Is there something at District 5?" Ajax approached the man as he grabbed his shoulder.
Nova's jaw clenched as his head fell low. "The Gula line."
"The what?" Samael shifted his gaze to Nova.
"Here in the fifth district is the Gula line," Nova said with a heavy tone.
"What? What's the Gula line?" Samael stood up, his hand slowly balling into a fist.
"It's a secret passage, a canyon that is supposed to be a path for humanity in case the need for them to evacuate here arises," Nova explained as he took a pen and marked a specific point on the map. "The Gula line provides a direct passage to the sanctuary."
"Then that means they're planning to attack it," Ajax chimed. "We need to warn everyone, and fast."
"We need to go now." Nova swiftly made his way out as Samael and Ajax followed closely.
Nova took out a ball of crystal as Silvana's figure appeared. Explaining the situation to her, the entire Sanctuary came to a close for now as the other quadrants activated their war protocols.
For now, their main forces were gathering in the Gula line. They've begun to barricade the place and close the emergency gates.
"How did they find out?" Nova couldn't help but ask as they flew through the air with haste, blitzing as though they were arrows.
"Are you sure there are not rats here? No moles?" Samael asked.
"I am sure of it! The sanctuary's location is hidden well; only I and a few other people know of its location," Nova explained.
As they began to arrive in the sanctuary itself, they were met halfway by Silvana as the woman hugged Nova tight.
"Are you okay?" She whispered in his ear.
"I'm fine; what's the status of the Sanctuary?" Nova asked.
"The people are a little rattled, but they've been preparing for this for years. They know the plans and routes," Silvana replied. "What's happening?"
"We don't know; all we know is that there will be an impending attack on the Gula line," Nova said.
"Okay, for now return back and get in your gear; meet us there," Silvana said as a squad of echoes passed by her. "I'll see you soon."
Without another word, she flew in the air, joining the leaving squadrons as they marched towards the location.
"You two get ready as well; we'll depart as soon as possible," Nova said as he returned to the sanctuary.
Looking at each other, Samael couldn't help but feel a pit in his stomach. He had seen this happen so many times. Tonight, many were going to die.
But they could reduce the casualties if they act fast enough.
Following Nova, the man led them to his personal room as he took out a detailed map of what appears to be the Gula line.
"The Gula line has multiple defences. It has three walls, each with their own ballistas and traps. The canyons and cliffs are also surrounded by mounted guns ready to fire at a moment's notice," Nova explained. "We're ready and prepared."
Samael studied the map as Nova got into his gear, wearing a lightweight armour with a sigil of time on its surface.
As they began to leave, Samael turned his head back to find Nova standing at the door. A solemn look present on his face. The man stared at the wooden hut he called home.
Giving it one final look, he followed the two.
As they arrived at the Gula line, the defences had been propped up as the machines of war had been ignited.
"We've trained our lives for this very moment. Make our ancestors proud!" Silvana roared as the soldiers below cheered in unison.
Approaching one of the commanders there, Nova asked. "Had the other sanctuaries been alerted?"
The man turned. "I-It doesn't seem to work, sir."
Samael looked at the man with his brows raised. "What do you mean?"
"The communication radios are blocked," the man said, his face pale.
They looked at each other as their faces darkened. Things were getting hotter and hotter as the moments passed. Whoever they were, they've planned everything well.
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
"Very well, keep trying. We need to get those messages in," Nova said as he left towards the top of the wall.
Following the man, they soon stood atop the towering defence as they overlooked the vast expanse of the Gula line. It was enormous with jagged cliffs at each side, creating a focal point and bridge for the enemy.
Whatever wanders in would surely meet one fate.
Death.
"Any reports from our scouts?" Nova asked his wife.
Silvana shook her head. "Not yet; they've yet to return."
"How about the other towers?" Nova shifted his gaze to the distance.
"They've reported no movement yet," Silvana replied.
Samael simply listened in as he closed his eyes. Channelling in his inner chamber, Samael found himself standing in a dark dimension where the Void stood watching.
"They're coming, aren't they?" Samael asked.
"They are."
Samael's jaw clenched. "How many?"
"Sizable, but not enough."
Samael's brows furrowed. "Not enough? What do you mean?"
"I'm saying I only feel a couple of thousand."
Samael's eyes widened. A couple of thousands was indeed a little small. He had seen the attacks at Servan, and they dwarfed that size, with hundreds of thousands of beasts attacking on the daily.
"But why...?" Samael muttered to himself as he was forced back to his body by a distressed call coming from a talisman slung in Silvana's waist.
"Come in, Vanguard 4, come in," Silvana called.
The device hummed for a moment as a booming voice of a man erupted. "They're here! There's thousands of them! I repeat, they're attacking!"
Silvana and Nova exchanged glances as the saint blew over a horn, causing a thundering trumpet to boom in the atmosphere.
Upon hearing this, the soldiers roared in unison as the ballistas and war machines cranked towards the valley, preparing their munitions as silence befell everyone.
Samael slowly reached to his side as he unsheathed Void Raven, his Void compass extending outwards towards the ravine as he narrowed his gaze forth.
Then came the tremble in the ground.
Bracing, Silvana roared. "HERE THEY COME!"
Firing multiple flares in the air, the surrounding area was illuminated red as thousands of abominations were seen running through the centre of the battlefield, their crimson eyes glowing in the dark.
And like clockwork, a mortar was fired, followed by another and more and even more as thunderous booms echoed one after the other in a hymn of death.
Samael felt the tremors course through the tall wall as colourful golden lights illuminated the sky, each symbolising a round of explosives akin to a shooting star in the dark cloudy night.
For each munitions smashing down the dry earth, a loud boom would follow along with the violent shockwaves that crept through the entire ravine. Soon, they came like drums being struck in a festival, raw and powerful.
The once silent defensive line had now been ignited by the drums of war and flames of battle, casting shadows over the tall cliffs at the side.
The soldiers gathered at their stations as the artillery team roared once more. "Fire!"
Samael watched the ground get pummelling by flames and ash as the bodies of the abominations flew in the air, scattered and dead. Yet their pursuit never ceased as they headed dead ahead.
But before they could even make it 60% close to the wall, multiple chain-linked explosions swept up, forming mushroom clouds as the ground the enemy stepped on was completely turned to ash.
"They've hit the mines!" Silvana roared. "The first defence is gone! Brace for the second!"
Samael watched in awe for a moment. He did not expect them to be this prepared. He supposed they weren't the final bastion for nothing. At this point, they didn't even have to do anything. The machines would wipe them out before they could.
At least Samael believed so when Elyria roared.
| Boss, watch out! |
Samael's instincts roared as he braced when a violent wave of astral pressure blew through the entire canyon like a tsunami, causing some of the smaller fences below to be completely swept away.
Nova's eyes widened as Silvana's heart raced. Ajax groaned as dark tendrils extended from his back.
In the midst of the battlefield, within the crowd of abominations stampeding, stood a single figure. Its white and gold embroidered cloak flying in the wind.
As Nova and the man locked eyes, Nova growled as the man let out a lecherous smile.
"Illial."
"Nova..."
Samael's eyes widened as he felt Nova's bloodlust burst through the roof. It was the first time he had witnessed him show this much anger.
Shifting his gaze upon the man in the centre, Samael saw a somewhat lean man. He was tall, about 6'4, and wore the typical robes of priests. However, his hair was extremely long, almost that of a woman, and had a pink tint to it.
Just staring at the man was enough to make Samael feel his stomach churn.
As the man looked back at Samael, his brows rose. "Oh...? What a surprise."
Samael felt a chill down his spine as his anger began to boil. He couldn't understand why, but he felt extreme anger against that man.
Reading his lips, Samael's eyes widened as he felt deafened.
"How was the mad scientist? Subject 2258?"
Samael's body trembled as his bloodlust began to seep out of his body, slowly crushing the surrounding area as Ajax was forced to back away.
Staring at the face of the man known as Illial, Samael felt his world begin to crack.
Subject 2258.
That was his code number when he was still in that damned lab.
How does he know...?
HOW?!
"Samael!" Ajax called, but to no avail, as Samael jumped forward with a reckoning boom.
"Fuck!" Ajax cussed as he tried to make chase when Nova spoke. "I'll handle him."
Looking at the man, Ajax's eyes widened as he saw his lip bleeding violently under his own bite.
Just what the hell was happening?!
Following Samael closely, Nova traced the man as he watched his figure turn to a blur.
"Hyperdrive."
Nova's eyes widened as he watched Samael's aura grow violently stronger.
Illial himself was caught off guard as the man appeared inches from his face, delivering a sickening blow that sent him back hundreds of feet. The ground beneath him completely shattering into fragmented pieces.
Looking at the man with bloodshot eyes, Samael roared in pure rage as he blasted forward and made chase, his hand stained pure black as he drew an arc in the air.
Illial's body was ragdolled violently as he was thrown back and forth in rapid succession, blood spurting out of his mouth as he smiled in ecstasy.
But before Samael could deliver another blow, the man's body slithered out like a snake. Boneless and with uncanny reflex.
Standing a few feet from Samael, Illial smiled as his body began to crack back in place, the damage done immediately vanishing into nothing.
Samael stared at the man with brows raised. Just what the hell was happening to him?
Looking at Samael with a grin, Illial spoke in an almost high-pitched manner.
"Allow me to show my love."
His figure vanished before Samael's eyes.
