Void Spawn - A litrpg adventure fantasy

CH160-A new system

Samael waited for a moment, yet Elyra's response caught him by surprise.

Boss, there had been changes in the system. It would be better to show and explain it to you first.

"Changes?" Samael's brows furrowed.

Due to you awakening the Matrix, the older system layout was updated. Instead of the typical progression, a new skill tree-based program had been launched.

"So then what happens now?" Samael asked. If Elyra did indeed implement new changes, then surely that change is for the better.

The older system utilised a simpler pattern. It made the host more reliant on the mercy of the Codex. But with this new system, the host can now choose his next progression.

Elyra hummed as another panel appeared in front of Samael. However, instead of the typical words he was used to, it showed him what appears to be a diagram of sorts.

The chart was akin to a tree branch, with the origin point being titled "Entrokinesis (Adept [+])". Beneath it were arrows winding down to 3 core aspects, namely: Control, Quantity and Purity. All of which have their own arrows as well with their own sub-disciplines.

Learning Control and Quantity (Warden) allowed him access to an ability Samael had seen Ajax use.

Avatar.

Furthermore, there were so many other things to take note of, such as the subzone, which he could only acquire upon mastering all three core concepts and rising to entrokinesis of the omen rank, or the ability entromancy, which, upon asking Elyra, revealed that it was the utilisation of void matter to inflict a burning pain upon the enemy in the guise of flames.

Though the Void itself was plenty painful, entromancy seemed to boost it further, as it works a little differently. The pain inflicted by Void wounds was often short-lasting sudden jolts of ache, but with Entromancy, it can prolong that pain as long as the fire burns. Not to mention soul sear, which, even if at a surface level only, still damages the astral body.

All the abilities were solid skills he could utilise if he put his mind to it, unlike before, when he had no say on the abilities he gained. However, this also means he needed to be smart because learning those abilities does in fact require precious time.

However, it seemed that the surprises were only beginning.

Boss, this also applies to the evolution tree.

"How? Isn't the Void species already a predetermined evolution line?" Samael asked as his brows furrowed.

While that may be true, you must remember, boss, you are the primogenitor of a new species. Meaning...

"I get to decide the genetic traits we possess," Samael muttered.

Bingo!

"Show me."

Elyra flickered as another panel bloomer in Samael's face. One containing the details of the lineage tree.

With the centre being "Void spawn", it branches off to 3 other core lineages.

Choose wisely, boss. What you choose will determine the rest of your path.

Samael fell silent as he watched the screen for a moment.

There were three core lineages.

The Sovereign Path.

The Void forger.

The Creator.

The sovereign path was a path dedicated for, as the name suggests, a king amongst all. The ruler and absolute authority of one. It was one of nobility and strength.

The Void forger was one focused on the aspect of weapons, be it for war or for killing. It will allow him to forge the very weapons he will need to slaughter the gods.

The creator was dedicated to a path of giving life, be it constructs or void beasts. To harness their powers and to retake what is rightfully his.

Samael stared at them for a long time. Each one was special in their own ways.

But he already knew his answer.

"I choose the Sovereign path."

Understood, boss. I greet the new king of the abyss.

Elyra flickered once more as the Sovereign path was lit while the rest withered away, their branches fading apart while the one he chose bloomed as it made way to more choices.

Currently, it was a linear line for now. Beneath said lines were evolutions that he would get in time as he filled up the assimilation meter written above.

The assimilation meter can be filled as you consume more and more creatures, boss. We won't be using the old system where there are multiple stages but rather one whole stage per lineage.

Current assimilation progress: 0%

Samael nodded as he began to read the evolution traits he would be getting.

Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author.

Based on the system at hand, the more the assimilation bar grows and reaches specific percentages, the more Samael will gain abilities and bonuses.

There were milestones in place where, upon reaching will be granted major evolutionary abilities that will strengthen him further.

One of which was termed "The Void Caller", which allowed Samael to whisper in the Void and be able to command the legions of the depths. Should he wish to.

But Elyra was quick to correct him and mention the severity of that decision, if ever. The ability will most likely begin weak, and if he summons something he shouldn't, it may cause that creature to challenge him.

That's not the end, Boss; there is also another function you've yet to see.

Signature Arts.

Samael's brows rose even higher.

You may assign abilities you like personally to be signature skills. Naturally, some of the major abilities you gained before had become signature skills themselves.

Do you wish to add any skill to the list, boss? Should you do so, please take note that it should be something you believe has a great potential to evolve and become better.

Samael held his chin as he drifted in his thoughts for a moment.

"Add Void Cleave in," Samael muttered.

Why that amongst all the skills?

A small smile etched itself on Samael's lips. "I've taken a personal liking to it."

Copy that, boss. Void Cleave has been added to the list.

With that, the series of changes had finally ended. Samael had now set his goals forward.

Currently, what took his attention the most was getting his subzone. He had seen what it can do, and with that power, no one will underestimate him any longer.

But to get that ability, he knew he had to first master all the other core concepts, making it the hardest ability to achieve, which was understandable for subzones were the icing of Saints. On the other hand, there were also the other impactful skills he could master for a shorter time.

It was either he chose the long-term investment or the shorter one.

Rising up, Samael dusted himself as he walked over to the pillars before leaping atop one. Shifting his gaze ahead, he looked over the entirety of Oros.

War was coming. He could feel it, lurking, deep in his guts. His instincts were telling him, and he knew they were never wrong.

Soon, maybe even the beautiful city beneath him may crumble under the fires of war.

He cannot afford that.

He has to learn his subzone – no, he must learn it first.

To protect everyone, to protect Lilith, he will give everything.

As the early morning sun rose over the horizon and peeked over the mountain ranges protecting Oros, Samael woke up early as he made his way towards the training grounds.

After further poking last night, Samael determined that learning Flux and Domain were highly beneficial in advancing his percentage faster. Flux targeted his quantity while Domain hit his control.

With that in mind, Samael shifted his focus on those two first.

But then he hit his first hurdle.

Domain.

Nova stated he needed to rearrange the paths for the best flow. But that is the problem in and of itself.

He did not have a dunamis. He had a matrix.

The matrix within him was 10x more complicated than the dunamis he used to possess. Their intermingling paths and streams made it so he will most likely take ages to finish.

But Elyra came for the rescue.

Knowing how Samael worked, the trusty companion proposed a training regime. It was mostly theoretical, but Elyra had run multiple simulations.

The process was as follows. The manual method taught by Nova needed Samael to focus on the paths and wait for potential hiccups. What Elyra did was force those paths in a more violent awakening.

By causing the flow to be maximised to its full strength, Elyra will begin to reverse a portion of his essence to cause the two flows to collide, forcing the stronger current to take another, better path.

Unfortunately, Elyra already said it herself.

It will be fucking painful. No sugarcoating, no sweet promises; it was going to hurt.

If Samael failed to resist the pain, he will undoubtedly die. Elyra had run multiple tests and found the most optimal method to do it, but even then there was a 40% casualty rate.

It was a high chance; Elyra was worried about what may happen.

But Samael did not buckle down. This was a necessary step to grow stronger faster. The ordinary path was not enough. Not nearly enough.

So he did what he must.

Sitting by the training ground in that early morning, Samael took a deep breath as Elyra whispered to him.

Tell me when you are ready, boss.

Samael composed himself as he took multiple deep breaths to calm his raging heart.

"Do it."

On it. Activating initiation systems.

Samael gritted his teeth as he tightly closed his eyes, his body bracing for impact.

Yet, the only thing he felt was a slight burn slowly spreading in his body.

Huh, it's not that bad—

Systems engaged, firing up and reversing essence flow.

Samael's thoughts crashed out of the window as his eyes widened and his entire body froze.

A violent jolt of pain ate his body whole as he felt as though serrated blades were crawling under his skin and deep in his flesh, ripping apart his entirety in a kind of pain he had never felt before.

Black veins began to show in Samael's pale skin, enveloping his entire body as those veins pulsed in a rhythmic pattern.

His eyes became bloodshot as his entire eyes became crimson stained. However, it did not end there.

Samael dug his nails into his flesh as he slowly ripped his own muscle. Yet, that did not distract him from the pain.

Biting his lips hard, the taste of iron stained his tongue as rivers of blood escaped his eyes and ears.

At that moment, Samael slowly lost his vision and his hearing; the only thing he could feel was the intense burn raging inside him.

Unbeknownst to him, his pores themselves slowly bled, causing him to literally create a puddle of blood beneath him.

Samael wanted to scream, yet the moment he opened his lips, blood went up his throat and through his mouth, causing him to vomit everywhere as he grasped the ground hard, drawing lines on its surface.

Hang tight, boss! You are 60% there!

Samael gritted his teeth as claws raked upon his body, writhing around like a worm.

Meanwhile, Nova and Ajax made their way up, talking to themselves when they saw Samael wriggling in a pool of blood.

"What the fuc—" Nova's words were cut short as Ajax immediately halted his advance.

Jerking his head towards the man, Nova's lips parted when Ajax's monochrome voice interjected.

"Don't touch him. Trust me; I've seen this happen before."

Nova's face erupted in disbelief as he switched his gaze back to the boy. "W-what is this? A disease? It's almost like he's forcefully reversing his essence! That's a death sentence!"

"I don't know," Ajax muttered. "But I do know one thing. It is that whenever he does something like this—"

"He comes out stronger than before."
