Chapter 34: Remember the Number Eleven (3)

After the match was restarted, it became a bit one sided. Saint-Malo were doing all they could to get back into the game. They started pushing forward, this time completely abandoning their pragmatic style of play as they tried to find an equalizer.

In the next few minutes, they created a few dangerous chances, forcing Monaco B's goalkeeper into action a couple of times but they just couldn't get that goal that they were so earnestly searching for.

44'

Once again, Saint-Malo were on the attack. They had the ball on the halfway line and we're recycling possession. All of a sudden, their center back imaged a line breaking pass that went through Monaco's forward line. It was straight to the Saint-Malo defensive midfielder.

The defensive midfielder got the ball under control with his first touch and out-muscled the player pressing him from behind to make a less than pretty touch with the ball.

Still using his body as a weapon, he powered through another Monaco B midfielder before dropping a pass out wide to the right flank.

Saint-Malo's right winger got the ball under control and started driving at Monaco B's left back, doing a couple of step overs before drifting out wide and sending a cross into the box.

The Monaco B center backs that were in the box jumped as high as they could, but they couldn't reach it. Fortunately for Saint-Malo, their striker could. He connected to the cross and managed to direct his header towards the top right corner.

Monaco B's goalkeeper dove towards the ball but he couldn't get to it. After trying and trying, Saint-Malo finally scored their first goal of the match, they finally got the lifeline that they were so desperately searching for.

The Saint-Malo striker didn't bother celebrating and saved Monaco B's goalkeeper the trouble of getting the ball out of his net and rushed back to the center circle. Even though he scored, his team were still trailing in the game so he knew that it wasn't the time for extravagant celebrations.

Nothing excited happened during the rest of the second half. Saint-Malo had most of the ball but they but they couldn't do anything with it. Monaco B decided to hold their lead and see out the rest of the first half so that they could regroup and re-strategize for the second.

The referee blew his whistle after a minute of added time, and the two set of players went into the locker room.

"Alright, nice work out there lads". Jeremi said as he looked around the locker room, his eyes briefly settling on Tiago and Tyler, the two youngsters that were basically carrying his team through this game. "Some of you have done as I expected while others..." Jeremi locked eyes with Tiago for a split second, "Well, let's just say that I've been pleasantly surprised".

Tyler and Tiago smiled when they heard Jeremi's comment. He might not have called any names directly, but it was very obvious that he was talking about them.

"And while I've been pleasantly surprised by a couple of you, we still need to do more. We may be in the lead, but the game is right there for the taking. Saint-Malo know this, which is why in the second half, they're going to come out firing on all cylinders trying to get things back on level terms. If they manage to do that, then the momentum of the game shifts in their favor and we can't allow that to happen".

The players nodded silently as Jeremi continued talking.

"Since they're going to come out firing on all cylinders, then we need to do the same as well. We need to take the game by the scruff of its neck and out an end to it, kill if off before they have a chance to rally".

"Wilson, Tiago, I loved what I saw from you in the first half, more of it please. Continue to wreak havoc and cause their defense problems. Eventually, there's going to be somebody reckless enough to try something dangerous and I need the both of you to be in optimal positions to exploit it..."

Jeremi's direct praise shocked the duo, but they nodded nonetheless and continued paying attention as he gave the team instructions for the second half. After he was done, he gave a motivational speech, firing everyone up, then sending them out for the second half.

When Tyler and Tiago walked out onto the pitch for the second half, they felt a lot different than how they did during the first half. They had two goals and two assists respectively. The nervousness that they felt had turned into confidence and they felt that they were going to put up a good performance in the second half.

A couple of minutes later, the two teams were organized on their respective side of the pitch. The referee blew his whistle and the second half was underway.

["I think it's been a very interesting game so far. It started out a little dull, and then Monaco went and scored two goals in succession. After gaining a two goal lead, the match was dominated by Saint-Malo who were looking to pull that one goal back, a feat that they accomplished late in the first half and now as the second half starts, with Monaco's striker kicking things off, it doesn't look like Monaco plan on slowing things down at all"]

After the referee blew his whistle, the second half commenced and instead of waiting around, Monaco B went on the attack right from the get-go.

The Monaco B striker made a long pass backwards, to one of his team's center back, then made a run deep into the opposition half. He wasn't the only one who did this. Tyler, along with the team's right winger also made deep runs.

A couple of passes later, Tyler found himself at the end of a longball from deep into his half.

He got the ball under control with his first touch and started driving forward. He was practically glued to the touchline so he could move about five steps with the ball before he was confronted by Saint-Malo's center back. Slightly behind him was Saint-Malo's right back who looked to be on alert.

"Tch. Grown men double-teaming a seventeen year old. What happened to shame?" Tyler muttered loud enough for the two players to hear before driving forward slowly as he looked to try and get past the blockade in front of him.

He stared at the two players and realized that there wasn't a lot of space between them. But there was space nonetheless. His legs flashed over the ball as he did a couple of stepovers before cutting inside with his right leg, then sharply turning the ball back outside, towards the width, using an elastico to get past the first defender.

Tyler and the Saint-Malo right back sprinted towards the lose ball, with the former managing to get there a mere split second before the defender. With his first touch he played a backheel pass back to Tiago who was on the underlap.

With his first touch, Tiago played a bounce pass back on the width of the left flank, to Tyler who had already ran past the right back and was inside the penalty box, albeit so close to the byline. He took one touch to steady the ball, and looked into the box, searching for a figure to cross to.

The Monaco B striker and right winger, along with the Saint-Malo all sprinted to the far side of the penalty box, leaving acres of space just back in the penalty area. Tyler didn't waste any time and sent a low cross, beyond the reach of the defenders that had ran too far in.

As soon as he saw the movements of his teammates and the opposing defenders, Tiago lurked behind and as soon as Tyler sent the low cross in, he ran into the box and shot at the post. He might've had time and space to shoot, but the goal was very crowded, and as such, he still needed a high level of accuracy and luck to make sure that he hit the target. Lucky for him, it seemed like lady luck was smiling at him and his shot went into the back of the net.

["What a ball to Tyler Wilson. Wilson now, ooh, what a bit of trickery there, plays a one-two with Tiago, beautiful pass from the midfielder by the way and Wilson's sent a cross into the box. Tiago is there! He has all the time and space in the world! Tiagooooo!!!! Goal! Goal for Monaco! The scores is three-one to Monaco. Not even up to two minutes after the second half started, and Monaco have already restored their two goal cushion. And it's the same duo who have been causing trouble since the first half again. Tyler Wilson, this time, turning provider. Goal for Monaco. And Saint-Malo are right back to where they started"]
