Trembling At A High Altitude

Chapter 109: Self-Taught Success

Without an altimeter, Li Teng had no idea at what altitude he was currently.

Just now, the captain on the plane had mentioned a target altitude of ten thousand meters. Given the short amount of time he had been falling, he should still be at a height of eight or nine thousand meters, right?

He couldn't see the ground below.

Li Teng felt that he couldn't just do nothing.

To survive, he had to exert his greatest effort now.

Even though he didn't have a parachute, a hard landing would certainly mean certain death, but what if there was some change below?

If, by that time, he found a safe way to land, like a huge crash net or a large cushioning sponge laid out somewhere, and he couldn't fly to the landing point due to technical issues, that would be too tragic.

Therefore, he had to take advantage of this precious time to quickly self-learn and master the skills of Wingsuit Flying.

No sooner said than done, Li Teng immediately began various trial flights.

Being a layman in the art of Wingsuit Flying, Li Teng had no clue about its techniques and had to explore on his own.

Turning, diving, decelerating by lifting his head, sensing the wind, and then using the wind to ascend or descend, and so on.

"It's not that difficult!"

Soon, Li Teng mastered these basic skills, though he didn't know if they truly counted as real Wingsuit Flying techniques. Without a coach, this was as far as he could self-teach.

If he didn't think about the lack of parachute and the high probability of a deadly crash, Wingsuit Flying was indeed a thrilling and fun sport. It let a person fly freely through the sky like a bird, fulfilling the thousands of years old human dream of flapping wings and flying independently in the sky.

After Li Teng had a basic grasp of the skills he figured out by himself, he purposely forgot about Hell Mode, the show he was currently filming, and threw himself wholeheartedly into enjoying Wingsuit Flying.

Enjoying himself before death.

After various lane changes, turns, and rolls, Li Teng felt a bit tired, so he decided to spread out his arms and legs and lie prone in the air to rest for a while. After some thought, he flipped over, lying on his back in mid-air.

Falling while feeling the warm sunlight on his face, apart from the whooshing wind past his ears, the whole world was tranquil.

Calmness, just like being in a dream.

Li Teng was very familiar with this feeling.

Because that's how most of his time on the rock pillar had passed.

Just then, a dark shadow suddenly appeared in the sky, directly blocking the sun above Li Teng.

Li Teng was startled at the unforeseen event before he realized what was happening.

Was it another actor?

Had they flown to where he was?

"Is it Anna?"

The person was backlit by the sun, so Li Teng couldn't see clearly.

The newcomer's flying skills were clearly more practiced than Li Teng's. After rapidly descending, they closed the distance and successfully grabbed Li Teng's arm. With a strong pull, they flipped Li Teng's body over and then grabbed his other arm.

After facing each other at close range, Li Teng finally saw clearly.

It was indeed Anna!

Even though she was wearing goggles and an oxygen mask, and donned in a flight suit, her hair and facial shape were still recognizable.

Once both stabilized, Anna removed her oxygen mask, trying to say something to Li Teng, but the moment she opened her mouth, the wind distorted it, and the whooshing sound by her ears prevented her words from reaching Li Teng.

Anna quickly put the oxygen mask back on.

After thinking for a moment, Li Teng reached out to bring their distance closer, then made an effort to bring his ear close to Anna's mouth.

Once Anna understood, she removed her oxygen mask again and brought her mouth close to Li Teng's ear.

"Find a water surface! Angle your body 30 degrees, feet first into the water!" Anna repeated several times loudly before Li Teng could make out her words, as it wasn't easy to stabilize their bodies, and her mouth hit his ear several times in the air.

"Got it! I can't fly! You lead me!" Li Teng replied following her example, fear that she couldn't hear him, he kissed her ear several times.

If she took advantage, why shouldn't he return the favor?

"Why did you bite me?" Anna questioned Li Teng.

"No! You're imagining things!" Li Teng bit again.

"Follow me! Copy my movements!" Unable to cope with him, Anna quickly released her grip and flew ahead.

Her skilled flying gestures were undoubtedly those of a veteran driver.

Anna led the way in front, and Li Teng followed behind.

But Li Teng soon found out that being a veteran driver was not so different. It was still the same maneuvers which he had self-taught and practiced just a while ago.

Subsequently, Anna performed some more difficult moves, sharp flying and abrupt stops, rapid descents with wide turns, and so on. Li Teng was a bit flustered, but after practicing several times, he got the hang of it.

"Extreme sports, and to think they were so hard! Just this, in fact, it's not difficult at all," Li Teng complained a few times.

Of course, this was all in high altitudes, where it wasn't hard to play around.

High-altitude Wingsuit Flying with a parachute was very safe, its safety coefficient even higher than that of driving a car on the ground.

Low-altitude was different. Close to the ground, the airflow was extremely turbulent, the terrain extremely complicated, and a moment of inattention could lead to a catastrophic crash.

High-altitude Wingsuit Flying and low-altitude Wingsuit Flying were completely different sports.

High altitude is a performance sport, while low altitude is akin to courting death.

Just like airplane skydiving and cliff skydiving are both paragliding, but airplane skydiving is very safe with three levels of security, a safe landing is guaranteed with normal operation. Cliff skydiving, however, offers only one chance to open the parachute and is constantly at risk of wind suction and crashing into the cliffs, with the slightest carelessness leading to certain death.

Li Teng was now engaged in yet another sport.

That was high-altitude wingsuit flying without a parachute from ten thousand meters.

And without an altimeter, he knew nothing about the situation on the ground.

The other six actors had long since disappeared from sight, and Anna was lucky to have found him; she might have jumped from the plane just after Li Teng, but not too late, or else the straight-line distance between them would have been too vast.

Perhaps when she jumped out, Li Teng was just a small dot in the distance within her sight.

There might have been several such dots.

She then had to make a quick decision to identify which dot was Li Teng.

It seems she guessed right, or maybe she had already found someone else, confirmed it wasn't Li Teng, and then continued flying to locate and confirm the next person.

Only a fluke amongst flukes could have brought them together just before death.

Once she had mastered the basic flying maneuvers, Anna had nothing left to teach Li Teng.

They simply chased each other through the high skies, flying freely.

The term "to fly side by side" probably comes from this.

Who knows how long it was.

Finally, the two of them broke through the clouds.

And at last, they could make out the ground situation a bit more clearly.

Everything on the ground was somewhat shocking to behold.

By now, they were still at least two thousand meters above the ground.

But they could already make out the huge patterns on the ground.

The ground was divided into countless squares.

Unclear whether it was forests, roads, or some painted effect.

The white squares, endless, made the world below feel quite unreal.

Like the virtual world in a computer game.

In each square, there were some patterns.

But these patterns were not yet clear.

Li Teng had a premonition that his path to survival might be in these squares.

In the patterns of these squares.

The altitude continued to drop.

Finally, Li Teng could clearly see the patterns inside the squares.

Inside were a series of numbers!

Each square contained a series of numbers!

It was unclear what was used to paint the huge numbers on the ground.

The number in the square directly below was 2713, while the one in front was 2803…

No, that's not right.

Li Teng turned his body around, straightening all the numbers in the squares.

The number in the square directly below was 2713, the one in front was 2625, the one behind was 2801, the one to the left was 2711, and the one to the right was 2715.

Left and right were sequential numbers, while front and back differed by increments of 88.

What did that signify?

Li Teng quickly did mental calculations.

Anna flew over, obviously she had also noticed these squares and numbers.

"I know where to fly now! There must be a safe landing spot there! Follow me!" Li Teng removed his oxygen mask and shouted excitedly into Anna's ear.

There wasn't much time left, with this altitude, he might not be able to reach that square before landing.

After releasing Anna, Li Teng again changed direction and flew towards the left rear, that is, towards the square marked with the number 2799.

Then it was 2973.

Having found 2973, Li Teng was even more convinced that his judgment was correct.

If not mistaken, the next number he should pass by would be 3059 or 3147.

Anna was unclear why Li Teng was flying this way, and she had no opportunity to confirm his judgment based on what reason, but since Li Teng was so certain, she still chose to trust him.

Would there be a miracle this time?
