Chapter 175 Imitation and Joining_2
The human hand corresponds to the bird's wing, and the human leg corresponds to the bird's talon. Mimicry requires adherence to such principles of equivalence. If one were to mimic a part of the body that has no human equivalent, the resulting changes would be unknown. One would have to experiment to find out. Failure to adhere to this principle would result in changes like those just witnessed, and the mimicry would shatter without any effect.
Alka looked at his pair of bird legs, feeling a sense of novelty. The others in the room watched as Alka's legs transformed into those of a bird, and he began walking back and forth in the living room. It was, to put it mildly, quite comical to watch. Though comical, this transformation had already revealed the Treasure's potential. Even casual imaginings could conjure up numerous interesting combinations.
Then they saw Alka's bird talons accidentally tear a hole in Bobby's carpet. After all, these were part of the Contactor's body, which possessed a constitution far stronger than an actual bird's. It wasn't that his original human legs had poor strength control, but rather that he was unaccustomed to the new limbs.
"Uh... they're a bit difficult to control."
Being so different from human legs, Alka found them novel but also very awkward. If used in combat in this state, various weaknesses would undoubtedly appear, potentially even leading to embarrassing situations.
It seems every transformation needs to be thoroughly practiced before being used in combat, rather than recklessly and randomly changing forms, Alka mused.
He went out into the courtyard, and the others immediately followed. Alka eyed a large tree in the courtyard and, with a light jump, attempted to leap onto a branch. However, misjudging the force, he overshot the treetop and landed on the other side. He had to recalibrate his strength, jumping several more times before finally landing in a spot Alka found satisfactory. The transformed limbs were indeed very difficult to control.
The bird talons promptly gripped a sturdy tree trunk. The three-toes-forward, one-toe-backward structure allowed Alka to stand stably on it. He could even sway back and forth freely without fear of falling—a clear advantage over human legs. Mimicking bird legs granted some of their abilities: his jumping power increased, he gained sharp talons, and he acquired a strong grasping capability. Human legs lack the grasping ability of bird talons.
"Can you mimic wings? Wouldn't that mean you could fly?" asked Lucilia, who had been clinging to Alka's shoulder to keep from falling.
Flight—something humans have longed for since the dawn of consciousness, always yearning for what they cannot possess.
Hearing this, Alka steadied Lucilia and jumped down from the branch, landing beside the others. His bird legs then shattered like a mirror, dematerializing in a blur and reverting to his original human legs.
Facing everyone's curious gazes, Alka shook his head. "No. Although I can mimic the wings of a small bird, I can't fly. I can only replicate their appearance."
Birds don't fly using only their wings; their entire body structure contributes to flight. Even if Alka transformed his hands into wings, his internal organs and skeletal structure wouldn't meet the necessary requirements. Naturally, he wouldn't be able to generate enough force with the wings to lift himself. However, if he were to find a bird with a very wide wingspan and mimic its wings, actual flight might still be impossible, but gliding from a height could be feasible.
Besides, this isn't Earth. Perhaps there are creatures here that can soar through the sky relying solely on their physical strength to propel their bodies. Furthermore, many powerful creatures exist, some even comparable to human Contactors. It's uncertain if such creatures can be mimicked.
Alka couldn't guarantee it; he was only making a conjecture. Whether it was truly feasible would only be known through testing, he thought.
After hearing Alka's explanation, everyone nodded with a hint of regret. It was a pity they wouldn't get to see Alka fly with wings.
"But this Treasure is really amazing! Once you research more animals, won't you have many options?" someone exclaimed.
After all, the human body's inherent capabilities are limited. In combat, or when necessary in everyday situations, switching certain body parts with animal counterparts would undoubtedly yield incredibly powerful effects.
Alka nodded. "I'll be busy for the next few months."
After finishing the simple experiment, everyone returned to the living room. Alka took out the Bloody Team Banner and handed it to Julia, asking her to try and see if she could control it. After all, her previous Treasure had been relinquished, so Julia no longer controlled one.
Looking at the banner before her, Julia reached out, channeling her Magic Power into it. However, as soon as her Magic Power was infused, it met strong repulsion, forcing Julia to stumble backward.
Seeing this situation, Alka frowned. What's going on? She doesn't have a Treasure anymore, so why can't she control this one? Alka wondered.
Facing everyone's puzzled gazes, Julia glanced at her hand, then looked up and said, "Although my previous Treasure was stripped away, a lingering aura remains. I'll probably need to wait until these traces completely dissipate before I can control this new one." She wasn't entirely sure herself; she was basing this judgment on the feedback she had just received.
Hearing this, Alka gently shook Lucilia, who was still on his shoulder.
"I don't know either. I've never heard of such a thing," Lucilia said with a shrug. She wasn't a walking encyclopedia who knew everything. Besides, all her knowledge came from books; she had no practical experience in such matters.
