Chapter 77: A New Home
"Is it not too late to meet them? Shouldn't we wait till morning?" Koul asked as they walked toward the house.
"I informed them we'll arrive late, and they said to come when we arrive. They've probably been waiting for us."
Koul had been so excited to get things done right away so he could start the academy. But now that he was about to face his adoptive parents, nervousness chewed at him.
"Is there anything else I need to know about them? Like, how to address them or greet them."
Kanstiv closed his eyes, unwilling to let out a sigh because even though Koul had dropped his title back home and now disguised himself as a commoner, he still remained a king.
Sighing to his questions even though they felt incessant would be rude. He knew Koul was nervous as he had already sensed it.
"You just have to call them mother and father. And be a filial son," Kanstiv replied.
Koul swallowed hard like he was trying to down a lump in his throat.
Back in his previous life, he was an orphan. As Koul, he was also an orphan. Yet now he was getting adopted, meaning he would have actual parents.
He didn't know how to start preparing to call two strangers, mother and father.
Should I just pray for them to die?
They reached the porch and Kanstiv knocked.
Soon, a middle aged man with gray beards opened the door. He stood tall and sturdy, clad in a butler suit.
They even have a butler, Koul thought.
He thought back to his own palace, realizing there was no butler. But then again, he had lots of palace workers and maids to compensate for it.
Still, he wondered why.
Noticing his face, Kanstiv whispered softly.
"Don't sulk, we tried our very best to take care of you."
Tsk!
"Welcome, young sirs. The madam and the master have been waiting."
The man stepped aside and ushered them inside with a hand gesture.
They stepped inside and their body was immediately wrapped in the warmth of the house. The inner decor was lavish.
Everywhere shone as bright as day, and it radiated luxury. It couldn't be denied that this noble family was indeed high up there.
Koul and Kanstiv were both escorted to the living room where a man and a woman sat.
They seemed to be in their mid 50s. The man had blonde hair while the woman had soft pink hair.
A thick cloth to chase away the cold was wrapped around the woman's shoulders.
As soon as Koul and Kanstiv entered the living room, the man and woman snapped to their feet.
It was as if they'd been anxiously waiting.
Their gazes fell directly on Koul, their eyes zeroed on him.
Koul's steps faltered as his nervousness chewed harder.
They don't… they don't have to stare so hard…
"Oh dear, you look even better than he described," the woman moved to walk toward Koul but her husband held her back.
"Dear, don't pressure him. He just arrived and must not be comfortable with us yet."
The woman saw sense in her husband's words and pulled back.
"Please pardon us. Have a seat," the man said with a gesture.
Koul and Kanstiv walked over and sat across the couch from them.
Before long, the butler came in with a tray of steamy tea and snacks. He dropped it on the table and excused himself.
Now alone, the four of them remained silent. None knew how to start the conversation.
The atmosphere was tense.
But in the midst of this, Kanstiv casually leaned forward, grabbed the tea in front of him and started drinking.
He couldn't really care less because it had nothing to do with him. He was but a middle man in all this and if the real people involved couldn't even get things started, then he'd just enjoy himself.
Koul awkwardly swept his eyes around the living room for some moment, avoiding the man and woman.
Their faces looked pale with nervousness. The woman's hand held tight onto her husband's clothes and the look of worry was palpable on her face.
After some moments, Koul exhaled aloud.
The man and woman flinched, thinking Koul was dissatisfied with things.
What's this? I thought I was the only nervous one, but their nervousness would win nervousness itself in a competition.
Again, he sighed. And in response, they flinched.
The woman looked to her husband, her face dark with fear.
But whatever was going on in her mind to cause such worry was wiped clear when Koul spoke.
"I'm Reshan," he said, trying to be as calm as he could.
I don't know what else to say…
The man and woman were a bit surprised so their responses came a bit late.
"Ah, yes, Reshan," the woman smiled.
Her smile was warm, and no pretense could be detected from it.
It made Koul wonder.
"I am Rosalis Veltaur. My husband here is Addan Veltaur," she introduced quietly, moving her hand from herself to her husband as she did.
"We are going to be your new parents," she said with excitement, but her voice dimmed in the last part.
"That is if you allow it."
She lowered her gaze, her tone now filled with quiet sadness.
This is going to be more dramatic than I thought.
Her husband patted her shoulder and pulled her softly to himself to console.
"What do you mean if I allow it?" Koul questioned.
Kanstiv, who had been focused on the snacks and tea, snapped his gaze toward Koul, skeptical that he was about to come off rude to them.
"You are the ones who found me worthy enough to be your child. You chose me. So I should be the one that is filled with gratitude, mother."
Koul's muscles stiffened at his own words. It was harder than he thought to call them parents.
Fuck, this is cringe.
Surprised but proud, Kanstiv returned his focus back to his snacks.
On the other hand, the man and woman's eyes opened briefly in shock. They were taken aback by Koul's words and were stunned.
But they soon relaxed and a smile bloomed across their faces. Even more, a tear slid down the woman's mildly wrinkled face.
This caught Koul off guard. He didn't know the words he merely uttered just to get things moving quickly would bring her to tears.
Eh?! Is it 'cause I called her mother?
Her husband rubbed her shoulder gently, his eyes also soft as if he was about to tear up.
Eh?!
"Please don't mind us," she sniffed softly, taking up a handkerchief to dry her eyes.
"It's just been so long since I've been called that," she cried.
Agh, this son of theirs must've been a real scum.
"Ever since Zetian left, we've been looking to adopt a child but no one wanted to come to us because of our reputation."
"But now, we have been blessed by someone as good as you who doesn't care about any of that and accepted us right away."
"Honestly, I'm really happy. We are happy," she leaned on her husband, smiling amidst her tears.
Emotions Koul couldn't quite explain bubbled within him. They stirred his insides and caused his heart to pulsate.
If asked to term those feelings, he wouldn't be able to. He simply remained seated like a statue and gazed intently at the old couple.
He was so carried away he didn't realize when the woman rose and came to a squat before him. Only when he felt a soft touch did he break away from his thoughts.
He gazed down at the woman. She held his hand in hers, gentle and warm.
"Dear, thank you for coming into our lives, for giving us a chance. We promise to love you with all our heart and not make you feel alone in any way."
She rubbed his hands gently, smiling softly at him.
Koul's heart pounded louder. The emotions building up inside him exploded and surged through him like waves.
He was surprised and confused. Not by much, but because of the way the couple looked at him.
Their eyes were filled with genuine love for him.
He wondered how that could be possible. How could they look at someone they just met with such gentle eyes?
It confused him. But most of all, it stirred emotions he didn't know he could feel.
His eyes turned wet and glistening. They were gentle, conveying emotions he'd never experienced.
His hair poured down as he stared down at the woman with such gentle eyes. He sighed softly, covering his face with his palm.
Hah…! I think I've gotten myself into something bigger than I imagined.
