Chapter 78: The Warmth of Parents
Watching Koul's reaction, how he was at the verge of tears to how these two strangers welcomed him with unrestrained love, made guilt tug at Kanstiv's heart.
He was reminded of how alone they've left Koul to himself. How they ignored and didn't care to offer him any warmth after the late king died.
He was filled with regret.
The woman, recognizing the emotions in Koul's eyes, pulled him into a hug. She rubbed his back gently, offering comfort.
Her husband also rose from his seat and joined them. He gently rubbed Koul's hair to comfort him.
Koul didn't cry, he simply remained silent and welcomed the comfort. This was something he'd never felt back in his previous life from anyone, nor here either.
He didn't totally understand it, but he felt comforted by their hug.
The emotional exchange stretched for some moments before it passed.
The couple returned to their seats and Koul went back to his normal self.
Then the conversation continued.
"Since you plan on enrolling into the academy, things won't be an issue for either of us," Mrs Veltaur said.
Oh! Kanstiv must've told them my intentions of coming to the capital. Good, make things easier.
"Enrollments are still open, hopefully you can register soon after all the formalities. Since it's late, you should retire to your room and rest."
She moved to rise but paused.
"Or do you want something light to eat before bed?"
Even if he did, Koul felt too awkward to say it.
"No, I'll like to rest."
"I'll escort you to your room, follow me," she smiled.
She took the lead and started leading them upstairs.
"Why are you still here?" Koul whispered to Kanstiv.
"I will live here with you," he whispered back.
"???"
"Just a story I made up. That I'm a close guardian to you, and that after your parents died, they entrusted you to me in the orphanage."
Koul looked away, clueless what to even say to that.
After climbing up the stairs, they reached a hallway. It was wide. By one side, large windows lined sparsely.
They walked past them further down, and a brown door nestled there. They reached it and stopped in front of it.
"It's here dear," she said.
Seeing as she didn't intend to continue further, Koul stepped forward.
He twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open to reveal the spacious room. The furniture was scanty and the decoration didn't feel stuffy.
It was just enough to breathe freely. He stepped inside and the woman and Kanstiv followed.
Koul scrutinized the room. He noted his window at a corner, his desk that was well arranged and his king sized bed.
Everything screamed luxury.
Well! We can all agree that a lavish life is one thing I'm blessed with in this life.
"I hope you like it," she asked nervously.
Like?
"I love it," Koul replied.
The woman's nervous face softened and relaxed into a smile.
"Then, I'll go show Sir Kain to his room."
Kain, Koul exhaled inwardly, staring at Kanstiv.
In response, Kanstiv shrugged.
Koul stood at the door, ready to shut it when they leave. But the woman lingered outside the door.
She looked hesitant as if she wanted to do something but couldn't bring herself to.
Watching her fiddle with her hands and sweat, Koul could guess what it was about.
She wanted to wish him good night, and if she could, even hug him.
Really, they're one of a kind.
If that was what she wanted, Koul didn't find any issue in cooperating. In fact, he planned to cooperate to the best of his abilities to get things moving smoothly.
He closed his eyes briefly for a moment and reopened them.
"Goodnight, mother," he said.
His voice was light, and he didn't seem to cringe like the first time he called her that.
The woman's face brightened up in an instant. She wondered if Koul could read her mind.
"Good night, dear."
She ruffled his hair gently and finally left.
Koul shut his door and went straight to his bed. It was as soft as his back home, bouncing him up and down until it settled.
He was so tired he couldn't think of much and only craved sleep.
It's finally starting, he thought as he drifted asleep.

The next day, Koul kept sleeping until the sun shone bright outside. Even though the sun had somehow penetrated his windows and made his room lighter, he didn't wake up.
At least, he didn't intend to. Until the footsteps outside hit his ears repeatedly.
As his consciousness returned, the footsteps grated his ears louder.
Koul rose to a sit. He rubbed his eyes, blinking away the drowsiness. Then he turned his attention to the door.
He opened his ears and listened intently to the footsteps so as to guess who it could be.
And from how restless it sounded, he knew right away it was his new mother. He could already guess how nervous she was pacing outside his door, unable to bring herself to knock.
Koul yawned and stretched. Then he walked to the door and flung it open.
Mrs Veltaur flinched and ceased in her steps.
"Good morning, mother," Koul greeted.
His casual tone as if he was well familiar with her made her nervousness die down.
She smiled.
"Good morning son. It's quite late in the morning. I wanted to wake you up for breakfast but I didn't want to disturb you."
"No, it's okay," Koul said. "Thank you."
"Then, come down to eat with us."
"Yes."
Koul followed her downstairs. He was already used to her smiley face that he wasn't bothered with it.
He was just glad she was happy.
Downstairs, at the breakfast table, Koul met Kanstiv and Mr Veltaur already seated.
Koul's brows wrinkled slightly.
They must've been waiting for me.
One look to Kanstiv confirmed it.
"We wanted to have breakfast with you so we waited," Mrs Veltaur smiled as she took her seat.
Koul also took his seat beside her. His gaze was lowered in guilt.
He'd never had to wait for anyone to eat. And no one had ever had to wait for him before they ate.
This was all new to him. It was as if he was finally discovering what a family really was like.
"I'm sorry," he said softly.
The Veltaurs immediately shot into panic.
"No, no! It isn't your fault at all. We were the ones who wanted to dine with you and decided to wait for you. We could've woken you up but we didn't. So it's not your fault," she rapped.
She was already starting to sweat in panic.
"I see," Koul replied quietly.
The breakfast table was long. And various sorts of delicacies filled it.
"Since it's our first meal together, we made a lot to celebrate."
"Thank you."
They started eating and occasionally, Mrs Veltaur would put food on his plate. They'd ask how the food was, whether he liked it.
They were pampering him. Showering him with attention he'd never gotten before.
This all made him start realizing the chores of being a son.
And somehow, he liked being a king more than this.
