Chapter 9: Chapter 8: BattleGround [2]
Their growls echoed like a low, rumbling thunder, sending chills down my spine.
These were monsters, fully adapted and transformed.
We were losing.
The air was thick with smoke blood blood.
Around me, the battlefield was shrinking.
Explosions and bullets that had once torn through the infected now seemed useless.
Every shot we fired, every desperate attack, only slowed them down for seconds before they surged forward again.
The bodies of fallen soldiers littered the ground, twisted and broken.
Those who still stood fought with every last bit of strength they had, but it wasn't enough.
"Hold your positions, Keep firing!" Sergeant Thomas's voice thundered, but his commanding tone was impossible to ignore.
I tightened my grip on my gun. My shots when they landed barely fazed the creatures anymore. Arrows and bullets bounced off them like pebbles against steel.
Even grenades, which earlier had torn through them like paper, now exploded harmlessly.
I turned, trying to find familiar faces in the chaos.
Amber was a golden streak among the blood and fire, her weapon glowing as she fired rounds that barely scratched the infected.
Close by, Edward, one of the remaining awakened, was locked in combat, his cyber suit blazing with energy.
But even he looked overwhelmed.
One of the infected lunged, its massive, clawed arm swinging for a soldier's neck.
He didn't stand a chance. Blood sprayed across the scorched ground as the soldier crumpled, lifeless.
"Goddammit!" Edward roared, his voice booming through his cyber suit's communicator.
He slammed his fists together, releasing an energy wave that tore into the monster.
It suddenly regenerated back. And became Immune to the same attack.
"They've fully adapted," a soldier shouted, his voice cracking. "They're immune to everything!"
I froze for a moment, my heart sinking. He was right. The infected were getting faster and stronger by every minute that passed.
And somehow, they have fully adapted to every single attack we threw at them.
"Damnit," I muttered under my breath.
"Keep shooting, Sky!" Amber barked at me. Her golden eyes blazed as she pulled me back from my spiraling thoughts.
She stood beside me, sweat dripping down her face, her cyber suit scorched and dented.
Despite everything, she still fought with precision and determination, her shots cutting through the chaos.
But even she couldn't hold back what was coming.
A guttural roar echoed across the battlefield, and a monstrous infected lunged at one of the soldiers. The man barely had time to scream before he was torn apart.
Another awakened one of the few left leapt forward, his glowing energy blades slicing through the creature's torso, but the beast didn't stop.
It crushed him with a single but hard swipe of its claw.
"Damn it!" Edward growled. He was the tallest and biggest of the group, he looked almost like the tanker of their group. his cyber suit pulsing with deep blue energy. His face was hard and lined with anger as he cut down another infected with a furious blast from his suit's energy cannon.
Amber stumbled back toward him, dragging me with her.
Come on give me a break, why drag me with you.
"Edward! This isn't working. We need a plan!"
Edward whipped his head toward her, his expression fierce. "You think I don't know that?!" His voice cracked from the strain, and I could see the exhaustion in his movements.
His energy levels were dropping fast.
Amber squared her shoulders, ignoring his tone. "We need to change tactics. They've adapted to our attacks, Edward. If we don't do something now, we're all dead."
He hesitated, glancing around at the carnage.
The infected were closing in, their snarls and heavy footfalls getting louder. Only four awakened were still standing, and maybe fifteen soldiers at most fired desperately, but it was no use.
The rest were dead or worse... Infected.
Edward paused, his chest heaving as he surveyed the battlefield. The infected were closing in, their movements impossibly fast and their grotesque forms a nightmare brought to life.
Bullets ricocheted off their toughened flesh. Explosives did little more than slow them down.
"We're losing everyone!" Amber pressed, her voice breaking. "We can't keep this up!"
Edward swore under his breath. Then, he took a deep breath and activated his suit's communicator.
His voice carried across the battlefield.
"All awakened listen up!" he bellowed. "We're going full power attack! Give it everything you've got!"
The soldiers nearby looked up in shock.
One of the male awakened said "But if we go full power, our—"
Edward cut him off sharply. "It doesn't matter! Either we die fighting or we die running. I'll choose fighting, running death is more stupid."
Amber turned to me, her expression firm. "Sky, Stay far away from us, don't get too close."
"Wait, what about—"
She grabbed my arm, shaking me slightly. "No. If you want to survive this, do exactly as I say."
I swallowed hard, my throat dry.
Are you crazy, thinking you can take down a fully transformed infected.
If you die how would the story continue. Not that I can afford to die either, I want to live.
Edward's cyber suit flared, the blue energy coursing through it now blinding. "All awakened, on my mark!" he shouted.
The other three awakened one man and two women responded immediately, their suits pulsing with energy as they prepared to unleash everything they had left.
The air itself seemed to vibrate as their power built up.
The infected soldiers, as if sensing the shift, hesitated for the briefest moment before resuming their charge.
"Now!" Edward roared.
The awakened let loose.
It was like the heavens split open. Blinding beams of energy shot from their suits, cutting through the infected with raw, destructive power.
Explosions erupted across the battlefield as the awakened released their energy that made the ground shake and the air burn.
They unleashed a wave of energy so intense that it disintegrated several infected in an instant even before getting close to them.
The ground beneath us cracked as awakened abilities tore through the horde, sending bodies flying and disintegrating whatever they touched.
I threw my arms up, shielding my face as the shockwaves rippled through the battlefield.
My ears rang from the sheer force of it all, and I staggered backward, barely keeping my footing.
For a brief moment, hope flared in my chest. Maybe this would work.
But my worries suddenly came back again.
This is stupid i don't think this would work, they have used this in the novel to fight few infected who has fully transformed and it was utterly useless.
It was something else they used to defeat it.
When the light finally dimmed, I lowered my arms and looked around, my heart hammering in my chest.
Smoke hung heavy in the air, and the battlefield was eerily silent for a moment. The smoke slowly cleared.
Revealing... The infected.
Most of them died, some had their limbs torn off and bodies scorched.
They could not regenerate fast because of the devastating power unleashed against them.
But they kept coming.
They still pressed forward, snarling through smoke and fire.
The infected didn't give up.
Amber cursed softly under her breath, her shoulders heaving as she tried to catch her breath. "They're still alive… How is that possible?"
Edward stumbled backwards, his cyber suit flickering erratically. "We can't… keep this up… like this" he said through gritted teeth. The full-power attack had drained them, their suits now cracked and sparking.
The infected were regrouping, their howls reverberating through the smog-choked air.
Edward's face twisted, I could see the strain pulling at him. Then he shouted "But neither can we can't stop! Keep pushing them back!"
I watched, frozen, as one of the awakened women stumbled.
Her energy was depleted. An infected lunged, and she screamed as it dragged her down.
Amber shot at the infected arm while it released her for a second, and used that opportunity to carry the awakened and run back.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from the battlefield.
Soldiers fell one by one.
The awakened were pushing their limits, their suits overheating and their energy draining fast.
Edward was holding his ground, but even he looked close to collapse.
Amber's face paled. "Edward! We have a bigger problem!"
Edward turned, his expression hardening. "Damn it…"
A terrible roar split the air, louder than anything before. I looked up and saw something huge moving through the smoke a massive infected, its form hulking and monstrous, as if it had absorbed the bodies of the fallen.
But no, it didn't, it was a dead soilder who's gene was different. So it transformation is different.
It's stronger and faster and much more develop than regular infected.
It's an infected beast.
