Transmigrated As An Extra In The Apocalypse

Chapter 8: Chapter 7: Battleground

The battlefield was a chaos.

Gunfire cracked through the air, punctuated by the sickening roars of the infected soldiers.

The once dead corpses now moved with unnatural speed, their grotesque forms barely resembling the humans they had been.

I stood in the mist of the chaos, gripping the unfamiliar weapon Amber had handed me, my knuckles white and palms slick with sweat.

My aim was shaky, but I fired anyway, praying the shots hit their mark.

Each shot that struck one of the creatures bought me a moment of relief... but not for long.

The infected weren't just relentless.

They were multiplying.

The more they infected their numbers increases, and they were gaining advantage against us.

"Keep firing! Don't let them break the line!" Sergeant Thomas's voice boomed above the chaos, his commands sharp and unwavering.

He stood at the center of the fray as he directed the soldiers.

Amber was a blur of motion beside me, her golden eyes focused, her hands steady as she fired precise shots.

Her cyber suit hummed with energy, a bright light in the mist of the carnage.

Between shots, she darted to injured soldiers, pulling out vials of healing potions and pressing them into their trembling hands.

"Drink this! Stay in the fight!" she barked, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Nearby, soldiers struggled to hold the line. Some fired desperately, while others called for reinforcements.

The supporting military staff moved quickly, tossing energy ammo to those whose guns clicked empty.

I tried to focus, to keep firing, but my mind was racing. My heart pounded against my chest as I watched the infected close in on another soldier.

His scream cut through the din as claws tore into him. His body convulsed, and moments later, his form twisted into something monstrous.

I swallowed hard, bile rising in my throat. "Amber!" I shouted over the noise, my voice cracking. "This isn't working! They're not stopping!"

She didn't look at me, her focus sharp as she fired another shot that dropped an infected mid-lunge. "We don't have a choice! Keep shooting for now, don't stop!"

I hesitated, my hands trembling. The reality of my situation was still suffocating me.

This wasn't just a fight in a story I read anymore.

This is now my reality. I could die here easily.

I can't die the second time.

A hand gripped my shoulder, snapping me out of my spiraling thoughts.

It was Sergeant Thomas. His face was grim.

"Pull it together, Sky," he said firmly. "We don't have the time for fear now. Do that after killing them all, now start blasting their heads off soldier."

I was surprised by how he got beside me so fast without me not noticing.

I push the thought of dying, and lifted my gun again, and I shot.

Bang! Bang!

The infected kept coming, their numbers growing instead of dwindling. Each time one fell, it felt like three more took its place.

Their forms grew more monstrous with every passing minute, their strength and speed increasing to terrifying levels.

"Thomas!" Amber called, running to his side. "We need a strategy. This isn't sustainable!"

Thomas gritted his teeth, his cyber suit glowing brighter as he unleashed a blast of energy that tore through a group of infected. "We hold the line until reinforcements arrive. That's the strategy."

"They're not coming fast enough or that's if they are going to arrive!" Amber shot back, her voice tight with frustration.

Another soldier fell nearby, his screams echoing before his body twisted into an infected.

I turned away, bile rising in my throat again.

Disgusting.

Amber stepped closer to me. "Sky, listen to me." Her voice was urgent but steady, cutting through the chaos. "You can do this. Focus. Aim for their heads it's the fastest way to take them down, you can do this, trust in yourself."

Of course I know how to kill them, but that is not my problem now.

You are the female lead, that is why you are soo confident, you have no problem for now.

But as for me, I am just a mere extra destined to die anytime soon.

I nodded slowly, and put on a faint smile, took a deep breath, and steadied my grip on the weapon.

Bang! Bang! Bang!...

The gunfire intensified as the infected surged forward, their growls growing louder, almost deafening.

Soldiers and awakened alike were giving it their all, but it was clear we were being overwhelmed.

"Ammo!" a soldier shouted, his voice cracking with desperation.

A support officer tossed him a fresh clip, but even that felt like a temporary solution.

Amber darted to another soldier who was struggling to stay on his feet. She helped him up, handed a bottle of water to him and fired at an infected that got too close. Her movements were fluid, purposeful, and unrelenting.

But even she looked strained.

The tide of infected was unrelenting. Their glowing bloodlust eyes cut through the smoke, their jagged claws ripping apart anything in their path.

And we were running out of options.

Bang! Bang!...

I fired shot after shot, my arms aching and my mind screaming at me to run, but there was nowhere to go.

We were trapped here.

Amber seemed to realize that too and cursed under her breath as she reloaded her weapon. "Thomas! We need a plan, now!"

Thomas didn't respond immediately. He was too busy tearing through another wave of infected with his cyber suit's energy blasts.

"Something is wrong here!" someone shouted.

"What!" Amber asked.

"They are getting stronger!" the person shouted.

I didn't need the warning to know it was true.

The infected were getting stronger, their movements sharper, faster.

Each one that was shot seemed to become stronger when they get up again.

Like they were adapting...

To our attacks.
