Chapter 28: The Web of Social Etiquette
Outside the Office of the Specially Appointed Physician Yi Bai.
Time passed slowly.
Since the drowned ghost had walked out of the consultation room, a long line of patients had formed, and restlessness was starting to build.
The drowned ghost, who had taken the lead, was now standing by the door with his wet hair hanging down, his expression growing more impatient by the minute.
It had been half an hour since Director He entered the office. The patients had tried several methods to eavesdrop or force open the door, but all had failed.
He Yi, at the peak of his ghostly powers, had proven to be a formidable opponent. Most of the spirits and evil ghosts present could do little to overcome him. For regular humans, any ghost would be deadly enough, but in the ghost world, the difference in hierarchy was more than just a matter of strength.
In some ways, the world of the supernatural and the human world were not so different.
In the human world, most people were ordinary, but the true power and wealth were always in the hands of a few. Similarly, in the world of spirits, most were low-level ghosts, like wandering souls or vengeful spirits. True powerhouses, like Count Rose or Ralph the Stitcher, were a rare breed, far outnumbered by the lesser spirits.
So, to force He Yi to leave Yi Bai alone, their only option was to unite and create a disturbance in the Third Hospital large enough to put pressure on him.
After all, the hospital had a reputable name in the supernatural world, and its reputation was crucial. If things escalated, the investors behind Third Hospital would be forced to intervene, and even someone as powerful as He Yi wouldn't be able to withstand that kind of pressure.
"Three more minutes. If the door doesn't open by then, we'll start making noise!" The drowned ghost called out in a commanding voice, raising his arm. The other ghosts responded in unison.
"Damn it! We've finally found a way to treat our ailments, and if that bastard He Yi dares to harm Yi Bai, we'll make him regret it! Are you with me, brothers?"
"Right! Let's charge He Yi!"
"Let's go!!!"
The ghosts' excitement and fervor reached a fever pitch. They might never get so worked up for any other reason, but when it came to the possibility of curing their long-standing ailments, their emotions were fully ignited.
The scene was intense.
The doctors in the other consultation rooms were visibly shaking, too terrified to intervene. Even the large, muscular ghost security guard had vanished without a trace.
"Creak…"
Just as the ghosts prepared to make a commotion, the door to the consultation room opened.
To the shock of the gathered spirits, Director He emerged, chatting and laughing with Yi Bai!
"Director He, please take care. I still have many patients to see, so I won't walk you out." Yi Bai said with a polite smile.
"No need to worry about me. But remember to contact Mr. Ralph before tonight. Leave that to me," He Yi said, his eyes gleaming with hidden intentions.
Yi Bai pretended to ignore He Yi's ulterior motives, agreeing smoothly, "Of course! I look forward to our cooperation, Director He."
"Likewise," He Yi said, his smile betraying a hint of something far more sinister.
As soon as He Yi left, the ghosts who had been on edge suddenly quieted down. With Yi Bai unharmed, they had no reason to cause trouble.
The Third Hospital returned to its usual calm.
The drowned ghost walked into the consultation room, unable to hide his concern. "Yi Bai, that guy didn't trouble you, did he?"
"No, don't worry." Yi Bai smiled and shook his head.
"That's good. But you still need to be careful. Director He isn't someone to be underestimated."
"Thanks for the reminder…"
For the next several hours, Yi Bai took advantage of his supernatural ability to process cases at a speed the other ghost doctors could hardly imagine. Meanwhile, they could only gnash their teeth in frustration as they stared longingly at the door of Yi Bai's office.
The hours passed quietly.
In the world of horror, there was no real sense of day or night. The sky was always a dark, oppressive gray, filled with clouds that resembled twisted, grotesque faces.
Inside the consultation room, after sending off the last patient of the day, Yi Bai stretched lazily. He pulled Lina into a gentle embrace, enjoying the rare moment of... well, "one human, two ghosts" time.
The ghoul's intelligence was somewhat lacking, only following him around as a bodyguard, so naturally, Yi Bai ignored him.
Hmm... Yi Bai thought to himself, not bothered by the ghoulish presence. After all, it wasn't time yet to complete his re-classification mission into a Death Knight, so having an ignorant ghoul watching over him wasn't a big deal.
"Lina, do you think I need to do anything further with Ralph?"
After a moment, Lina, sensing something strange about Yi Bai's posture, quickly tried to shift the focus of the conversation. "Yi Bai... you seem a little... off. You okay?"
Yi Bai smiled softly, holding Lina tightly. "No need. The more we do, the more likely we are to leave traces. With Ralph, we've never mentioned the blood-clad ghost's arm."
"When the time comes, if Ralph realizes he's been 'played' by He Yi, his anger will only fall on him, not us, right?"
Yi Bai's smile grew even brighter. "If He Yi tries to drag us down with him in his final moments, it'll only benefit us. We have nothing to lose."
Lina seemed confused. "Benefits? How can this be beneficial?"
"The corpse of the blood-clad ghost is actually the property of Count Rose's close friend, Jiang Ling, the one who rules the tombs. If Ralph truly wants it, we can just let him handle it himself."
"After all, Ralph is a big client, and the forces behind him are strong. They'd surely be willing to pay a high price for it."
"As intermediaries, we can help smooth things over, and in the process, earn goodwill from both Ralph and his powerful associates, don't you think?"
Yi Bai understood the situation very clearly. Since Jiang Ling had mentioned the blood-clad ghost's corpse, it suggested that it wasn't as valuable to her as it seemed. If it were really such a priceless treasure, she wouldn't have mentioned it so freely.
"So, after dealing with He Yi, if Ralph still wants the ghost's arm, we'll work out a deal with Jiang Ling and make sure Ralph gets what he wants. In the end, we're just helping to mediate the transaction—and perhaps even earn a favor."
The world of horror wasn't just about killing and fighting. It was also about the intricate web of human and ghostly connections, filled with politics and unspoken rules.
