Chapter 27: He Yi Knocks: A Deal in the Shadows?
Outside the Consultation Room of Specially Appointed Doctor Yi Bai.
The queue of patients, all ghosts and monsters, stretched on like a dragon.
With the example of Count Rose as a precedent, more and more creatures were flocking to Yi Bai. After receiving the prescriptions from him, those who had resolved their issues rushed to the Third Hospital's pharmacy to try out the remedies.
And without a doubt, the treatments worked perfectly!
Soon, those who had previously been skeptical of Yi Bai's methods had all let go of their doubts and joined the long line outside his office. Some of the wealthier monsters even began to spend ghost coins, buying spots in the queue from those ahead of them. Yi Bai's reputation had spread throughout the Third Hospital like wildfire.
In stark contrast, outside the other doctors' consultation rooms…
There was nothing but emptiness—no patients, not even a single soul.
The Green-skinned Alchemist, the Bird-beak Masked Doctor, and others stood gritting their teeth at their own office doors. The bitterness on their faces was unmistakable.
They were furious. Yi Bai had stolen their livelihoods, and they could hardly bear the sight of him thriving while they floundered.
Now, more than ever, they wanted Yi Bai gone.
"Director, you're finally here!" The Bird-beak Masked Doctor sprang to greet He Yi as soon as he appeared in the hallway corner. Lowering his voice, he complained bitterly, "If this goes on, we'll have nothing left to do!"
The other doctors shared sympathetic glances, their frustration palpable.
However, none of them could have anticipated He Yi's response.
"Hmph! If you're incompetent, who else can you blame? The patients trust Yi Bai, and that's why they're choosing him. Maybe you should take a long, hard look at yourselves?" He Yi's cold rebuke caught them all off guard.
"???" The Bird-beak Masked Doctor and the others stood stunned, unable to believe their ears.
They knew He Yi well, and this behavior was nothing like the cunning, ruthless character they were accustomed to. Had the director lost his mind?
Did they not remember who it was that had originally orchestrated bringing Count Rose to Yi Bai? Who had hoped to use Yi Bai to eliminate him?
Now He Yi was acting out of character. Had he lost his edge?
With a final scoff, He Yi turned and walked directly toward Yi Bai's consultation room, leaving the doctors in a daze.
Inside Yi Bai's Consultation Room
Knock, knock, knock!
The sound of the door echoed through the room. Yi Bai, who had been taking the pulse of a drowned ghost, faintly smiled as he heard the knocking.
The fish had bitten the hook.
Before Yi Bai could even respond, He Yi had already opened the door without waiting for an invitation, disregarding the fact that Yi Bai was still treating a patient.
Yi Bai feigned annoyance, though inwardly he was laughing coldly. The more eager He Yi seemed, the more it confirmed Yi Bai's suspicion—his greed was driving him to make a move.
"Director He, as a fellow doctor, you should understand that interrupting a consultation is highly disrespectful," Yi Bai remarked coldly, his expression unfazed. Lina, standing behind him, was ready for anything, and Yi Bai showed no fear.
"Apologies, I was too forward. But..." He Yi's tone shifted as he feigned politeness, "Doctor Yi, you must be careful with the friends you keep. Your three human companions just told me something interesting..."
Before He Yi could finish, Yi Bai's expression darkened, his face turning ashen. Lina's eyes flashed with a murderous intent, her teeth gritted in fury.
Seeing this, He Yi couldn't help but smile smugly, as though he had anticipated their reaction. "This patient can leave for a moment," He Yi gestured to the drowned ghost, "I have some private matters to discuss with Doctor Yi."
The drowned ghost exchanged a subtle glance with Yi Bai, silently asking, Do you need help?
"Go for now. Your condition is minor. We'll talk after I finish with Director He," Yi Bai said, maintaining his calm demeanor.
As soon as the drowned ghost exited, He Yi casually flicked his wrist, summoning an ancient copper coin from his palm. The air immediately thickened with a rancid, foul smell.
"What's the meaning of this, Director He?" Yi Bai asked, his face cold as he pinched his nose, giving He Yi no quarter.
He Yi didn't seem fazed, lazily waving it off. "Just a small trick. The scent masks any eavesdropping. This is a rather significant transaction, after all. We wouldn't want others to overhear, would we?"
Yi Bai, unimpressed, cut to the chase. "Spit it out, Director He. No need for all this theatrics."
"I like your directness, Yi Bai," He Yi grinned, flashing a wide, predatory smile. "As for those three humans who betrayed their friend... I've already dealt with them. Consider it an advance on the deal I'm about to propose. Let's talk business."
He Yi's blunt approach made no attempt to hide his intentions. He clearly wanted a share of Yi Bai's success.
"Heh..." Yi Bai remained silent, but Lina couldn't help but sneer. "Director He, you've been at the Second Chair position in the Third Hospital for years, you don't know that some things aren't for just anyone to meddle in?"
"You're right," He Yi agreed, unfazed. "Doctor Yi, you've worked hard to build the relationship with Count Rose, and I admit, that's not my strong suit. But..."
He held the copper coin between his fingers, his grin widening. "What's the point of working with Count Rose if all the benefits go to him? Have you thought about how much more you could take for yourselves?"
Yi Bai and Lina didn't speak, but He Yi assumed they were silently agreeing. His smile grew even wider.
"Let's face it, you two are just intermediaries. You get a little something from Count Rose's generosity, but your share of the profits... It's small change. Consider how much more you could make, especially with the Blood-Soaked Vengeful Ghost's Arm worth nearly a million ghost coins!"
Yi Bai's expression shifted slightly, as if he was considering He Yi's words.
"Why let Count Rose pocket all the riches?" He Yi's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, his words laced with a magnetic, almost hypnotic quality. "Don't you want more for yourselves? If you join me, we can split this bounty together—equally. A mutually beneficial deal."
As he spoke, the copper coin in his hand began to glow faintly, sending waves of dark influence over Yi Bai and Lina.
Lina, however, was no ordinary person. As a Red-Eyed Vengeful Ghost with a unique status, the spell-like influence of the coin had no effect on her whatsoever. She smirked, her cold eyes never leaving He Yi's face.
Yi Bai remained silent for a long moment, then, finally, spoke. "Alright, Director He. Let's hear your version of this 'mutually beneficial' deal."
