Chapter 21: A Magic Circle? Or Just a Straw in Disguise?
From Lina's tone, Yi Bai could sense a hint of subtle jealousy.
Well... of course, it wasn't because she envied his transformation into a vampire. It was because she envied Count Rose, who had turned him into a vampire, while Lina didn't have such a power to transform others.
Yi Bai could easily see through this small thought.
As they worked together on the covert mission, his remarkable healing skills only deepened Lina's admiration for him. At the same time, her affection for him had grown to a special level of "obsessive affection," far beyond normal friendliness.
Normally, the progression of friendliness follows this order: Neutral → Friendly → Affable → Trusting → Open-hearted → Life-and-death bond. The reverse, however, is: Hostile → Bloodlust → Hatred → Animosity.
Obsession and infatuation are special exceptions, reserved for unique relationships that go beyond mere friendship.
"Wait! I have another question!" Yi Bai suddenly looked up, his face filled with disbelief.
"What's the matter?" Lina asked, puzzled.
"Count Rose transformed me into a vampire, yet she still plans to feed on my blood... doesn't that mean..." Yi Bai's voice trailed off, as his mind began to spiral into a bit of confusion. The vampire world seemed a bit chaotic.
"I'm not sure about that," Lina admitted. "But I've heard that vampires were created by the bloodline for the purpose of ensuring a constant supply of fresh blood. However, something went wrong along the way."
"I see..." Yi Bai forced a smile. "Is there anything else you need to tell me? You can tell me everything; I can handle it."
"Well, nothing much, but Count Rose left a blood magic seal on your arm. You can use it to transmit 'medication' to her, or possibly even contact the Count herself."
Lina thought for a moment before pulling back Yi Bai's sleeve, revealing a deep red magic circle the size of a seal.
"..."
Yi Bai stared at the magic seal on his arm, lost in thought.
After a brief silence, his face stiffened, and some rather unpleasant ideas began to form in his mind.
He turned stiffly towards Lina and asked, "Is there any chance that this magic seal could automatically draw my blood and send it to Count Rose's lips?"
"Ah, well..." Lina hadn't anticipated such a line of thought. Her expression tilted slightly as she entered a moment of reflection.
After a few seconds, Lina's face grew serious. "Before leaving, Count Rose asked me to tell you that you can manage your own course of 'medication,' but if she feels the treatment isn't effective enough..."
Yi Bai's face immediately fell, and his mood darkened.
He was beginning to suspect that the magic seal left on his body was essentially a "straw"!
Lina, sensing his mood, tried to comfort him. "Yi Bai, don't worry too much. I think Count Rose truly values you, or she wouldn't have given you her 'First Embrace,' something she has never used on anyone before."
But, ironically, the moment she tried to comfort him, Yi Bai felt as if he had stumbled upon some uncomfortable truth.
"Somehow, I feel like Count Rose turned me into a vampire so that my vitality would be stronger... so I wouldn't be drained and killed so easily?"
Lina: "..."
Both the human and the spirit fell into silence.
The ghoul kneeling behind them remained motionless, as if guarding Yi Bai.
"Forget it, maybe I'm overthinking it," Yi Bai muttered, shaking his head as he cast aside the grim thoughts.
His gaze returned to the magic circle, something he had never seen before but somehow knew exactly how to activate.
Then, Yi Bai's lips twitched uncontrollably.
Step one to activating the magic: drop blood.
A straw! It was definitely a straw!
Yi Bai couldn't help but grumble internally, but reluctantly, he pricked his finger and let a drop of blood fall onto the seal.
In an instant, the magic circle shone with a blood-red light, and the blood drop never reached the seal. It disappeared mid-air.
Lina: "..."
Yi Bai: "..."
Elsewhere, in an ancient castle surrounded by thorny black roses, a dining table was set.
The sound of clinking glasses echoed through the spacious hall.
The crimson liquid in the glass emitted a fragrance of grapes, a favorite drink of vampires — blood-red wine, similar in color to blood but with a taste entirely its own, loved by the undead.
"Well, well, you're actually inviting me to dinner. Looks like your 'illness' has been cured after all."
A high-pitched, slightly stiff voice, tinged with playful sarcasm, echoed from the shadows.
Count Rose smiled charmingly, her composure unfazed. "Illness? What illness? I was simply bored the other day and decided to visit a hospital to sample some blood. You must have misunderstood."
"Hmph! Sampling blood, and killing the doctor in the process?"
From the darkness, a haughty, dismissive sniff came, followed by a teasing remark. "After all these years of being 'besties,' who else would know you better than I do? I'm just curious, how did a human manage to cure your incurable illness?"
"Hm?" Count Rose raised an eyebrow, and the spacious hall instantly transformed into a sea of blood.
Countless red veins surged as if they had a life of their own, gathering in preparation for an attack.
The atmosphere in the room instantly became tense.
Count Rose's elegant face briefly flickered with anger. "Have you been investigating me?"
"Oh? Getting nervous, are we?" A figure stepped forward from the shadows.
A small, yellow talisman was affixed to the figure's forehead. Standing under five feet tall, the figure wore an adorable, fitting ancient robe, topped with a ceremonial hat.
With the yellow talisman partially obscuring the face, a delicate and almost doll-like face appeared, its bright yellow eyes staring intently at Count Rose.
"Aren't we supposed to be best friends? You were planning on keeping this secret from me?"
The seemingly naive little girl was actually radiating terrifying corpse energy, which manifested as ghostly, gray claws, now locked in a stand-off with Count Rose's blood threads, showing no sign of fear.
For Count Rose, who had once laughed off all these little threats, this moment felt unnervingly different.
The situation was no longer simply about playful teasing between friends; it was the consequence of something deeper that was now out of her control.
The two, a vampire and a zombie, had shared many years of friendship, though one might wonder just how the two had ever become "besties" in the first place.
But right now, the situation had shifted—an unspoken truth seemed to be hanging in the air, and Count Rose's attention had strayed for just a moment, leaving the door wide open for her 'black-hearted' friend to strike.
