Chapter 19: Cursed Relic?! The Mysterious Eye Ring
"Hmm?"
Yi Bai turned around, his gaze filled with confusion as he looked at the gluttonous demon. "Is there something else?"
"No, no problem," the gluttonous demon, Kid, replied, wiping his tears with one hand while digging into his oversized pants pocket with the other. "I'm really grateful, Yi Bai, for solving my lifelong problem."
A moment later, he pulled out a small box.
"I may not be much, but I know how to show my gratitude," Kid rumbled, his voice heavy. "You solved what might've been a lifelong issue for me, so as a token of thanks, I want you to have this. Hope it can help you somehow."
"Uh..." Yi Bai blinked, a bit taken aback, before his eyes grew thoughtful.
This time, he took off his gloves and, with a smile, accepted the greasy little box from Kid.
"Thank you," Yi Bai said, keeping his voice calm and polite.
"Don't mention it," Kid chuckled, scratching his head, a little sheepish. "It's the least I can do."
"Oh! Right!" Kid suddenly seemed to remember something. "I'm not sure what's inside, but it looks like some kind of special cursed object. It could be a really rare demon artifact. If you can't use it, you could always trade it for some demon coins."
At the mention of "demon artifact," Yi Bai's eyes widened.
A demon artifact? Even just a possibility was enough to spark his interest!
In the world of the Horror Game, demon artifacts were not like the common magical tools or run-of-the-mill enchanted items you might see in fantasy novels. These were something entirely different.
Monsters were terrifying not just because of their grotesque forms or powers, but because they often wielded abilities far beyond human comprehension. These artifacts, created in the supernatural realm, were a manifestation of that power.
Demon artifacts were rare and incredibly valuable.
Even someone as strong as Lina, with her considerable abilities, didn't possess one (her surgical scalpel was just an ordinary tool). It wasn't even that she lacked strength; it was just that the chance to acquire such an artifact was purely based on luck.
It wasn't about skill. It was about whether the artifact chose you.
Yes, the artifact chose the user.
Most people never found themselves worthy of a demon artifact. They didn't "claim" them through force or dominance, but by meeting certain... unspeakable conditions. There was no direct "ownership." If the artifact didn't recognize you, it was just another useless object, no different than a trinket.
Yi Bai knew of a few fortunate souls who'd gained the recognition of these artifacts, transforming them into some of the game's most powerful players—capable of fighting alongside monsters and holding their own.
With a mix of anticipation and curiosity, Yi Bai looked at the box in his hands.
Who wouldn't want to possess a demon artifact? It would provide him with a safety net, allowing him to defend himself without relying on others.
"Whether it's an artifact or not, I'll accept this gift from you," Yi Bai said, smiling calmly. "If we ever cross paths again, and you need help, I'll do what I can."
His words were calm, but the promise was genuine. A drop of kindness, though it might not be returned in full, deserved some form of reciprocation. Especially if this small box contained a demon artifact. Then it would be more than just a favor—it would be a truly remarkable gift.
Kid's eyes lit up. "Alright! If I get sick, I'll definitely come to you, Yi Bai!" he said, his voice full of joy.
To him, whether the box contained an artifact or not, Yi Bai's promise was a huge bonus. A gift out of gratitude that had turned into a future connection with a renowned healer. What more could he ask for?
After bidding farewell to the grateful gluttonous demon, Yi Bai didn't rush off to his next task. Instead, he and Lina found a secluded spot to inspect the box.
Once they were sure no one was watching, Yi Bai opened it carefully.
"An eye?" Yi Bai's eyebrows raised in surprise.
"What an eerie aura…" Lina muttered, her sharp eyes narrowing in suspicion. Her normally calm face took on a hint of wariness.
Inside the box was a blood-red, vertically slit pupil, no bigger than a marble, pulsing with an unnatural glow. It had the strange, mesmerizing appearance of a perfect jade gem. The pupil seemed almost alive, slowly rotating within the confines of the ring, locking eyes with Yi Bai.
Yi Bai froze.
That eerie, unsettling gaze made his skin crawl. But nothing happened. There was no sudden rush of recognition or overwhelming power—just a steady, unsettling gaze from the ring.
The eye kept its unblinking stare, as if acknowledging Yi Bai, but nothing more.
"Looks like it's a demon artifact after all," Yi Bai murmured, regaining his composure. "But its function is still unknown. And it seems… neither of us can become its master."
Lina frowned, her face a mixture of disappointment and concern. While she wasn't desperate for the artifact herself, she had hoped that Yi Bai, being human, might be able to wield its power.
As a human player, Yi Bai wasn't supposed to survive in the Horror Game long-term, and the only reason he could survive in places like the Third Hospital was because Lina had his back. But once they left that protected space, things would be far more dangerous.
"Ah, well. It's still an unexpected gift," Yi Bai shrugged, pushing his disappointment aside. "Let's finish the job. We can always find a way to sell this later for a nice stack of demon coins."
Lina nodded, though her expression showed that she was thinking the same thing—she would have liked Yi Bai to have more power to protect himself.
Shaking off the negative thoughts, Yi Bai gently placed the box in his pocket and grabbed Lina's arm. Together, they set off toward their next task. Behind them, the looming, menacing figure of the corpse-eating demon trailed quietly, its presence a constant reminder of the dangers lurking around every corner.
With the help of his unique ability, Insight Eye, Yi Bai and Lina breezed through the remaining patients at the Third Hospital, all of them victims of Dr. He Yi's cruel schemes, just like Kid.
In total, Yi Bai earned 6,000 demon coins and gained the trust of six more demons, along with one more artifact. The hidden mission at the Third Hospital was almost at its end.
But this time, the Horror Game was the one to initiate the next phase.
