Thriller!Me? The Death Knight

Chapter 17: The Greedy Ghost Started to Panic

The Greedy Ghost Started to Panic

Inside the office, as He Yi was still reeling from the shock of his world crumbling, a loud knock-knock echoed through the door.

The person knocking didn't seem to have any intention of waiting for a response. Without hesitation, the door swung open.

He Yi instinctively shot a glance over.

In an instant, his pupils shrank to pinpricks!

An icy killing intent radiated from him, so palpable that even the werewolf doctor, who only had the strength of an ordinary evil spirit, shuddered involuntarily.

For some reason, though Yi Bai could clearly sense He Yi's murderous aura, he didn't flinch from the intimidating presence. Instead, he played it up a little, pretending to be slightly afraid. "Director? What's going on? I haven't done anything to offend you, have I?"

Hearing this, He Yi snapped out of his trance. He quickly suppressed his anger, killing intent, and confusion, forcing himself to ask, "Wasn't I supposed to send you to pick out the body parts the customer needs? What's going on here?"

Yi Bai let out a sigh of relief, "Well, here's the thing. I went to the morgue, and for some reason..."

Before he could finish, cold sweat broke out on He Yi's forehead, and in his mind, he cursed himself for being an idiot!

Why on earth had he asked about this in front of the werewolf doctor? Wasn't he just exposing the morgue's secret?

He immediately cut Yi Bai off. "Forget that for now. What about this thing? How dare you bring a ghoul into the morgue?!"

He Yi pointed angrily at the grotesque, stinking ghoul that had been following Yi Bai around, its ugly features almost making the room feel colder.

He Yi was quick to turn the tables, an expert at shifting the blame. No matter how Yi Bai had managed to survive the ghoul's attack—or even gained its trust—he wasn't concerned with that right now.

What mattered was, he could easily pin this disaster on Yi Bai!

"Ah, him? We met in the morgue just now. But I didn't bring him in. I'm just a new human here, so how could I have done something like that?" Yi Bai thought to himself, amused. With a single line, he dodged the bullet.

He was a player, after all, and had never interacted with the Third Hospital before. That was an undeniable fact.

Plus, with Lina as his witness, there was no way He Yi could pin the ghoul's appearance on him.

He Yi furrowed his brows. One problem after another—he had completely forgotten that Yi Bai was just a human player.

A rookie, no less. Under close surveillance the entire time. There was no way he could have secretly brought a ghoul into the morgue and walked out with it!

"Sorry, I let my anger cloud my judgment," He Yi immediately apologized, then shifted the focus back to Yi Bai. "But wait, you say this ghoul is your new friend? Do you understand what it means to bring a ghoul into the morgue?"

"Of course I do. The morgue is pretty much cleaned out, and even those three human players... they've probably..." Yi Bai shrugged nonchalantly, pretending not to care.

He casually picked up a severed arm—one that had been gnawed on by the ghoul—and tossed it onto He Yi's desk.

"Here, this is the best I could find. I hope your 'big customer' isn't too picky."

He Yi was stunned into silence.

As Yi Bai spoke, the cold sweat on his forehead increased, dripping down like a waterfall. The human players who had returned alive had allowed him to temporarily forget about the "big customer" wanting his arm.

But now that it had clicked back into place, He Yi was in full-blown panic mode.

As the chief physician of the Third Hospital, his hands were everything. He couldn't afford to lose even a single finger, let alone an entire arm.

His position as the director of the Third Hospital was his foundation for wealth and power.

Even if the "big customer" was rich, they couldn't possibly pay an excessive price for his arm. He would never accept that.

"Damn it! Damn it! What do I do now? I can't refuse that big customer!"

He Yi was in a frenzy, pacing back and forth as his mind raced.

Meanwhile, Yi Bai wasn't about to let up. He had just completed a hidden mission and earned 1000 ghost coins as a reward. He planned on finishing the Third Hospital's hidden mission and collecting the final prize too.

The problem that He Yi was stressing over? That was all Yi Bai's doing.

It was simple, really. He had used his resources cleverly. The infamous "untreatable disease" of the Rose Countess had been solved by Yi Bai, and it earned him her praise. This had more impact than any real-world advertisement ever could.

With that kind of reputation, plus Lina's ability to contact the "big customer," Yi Bai was in a prime position to make a move.

He proposed a small suggestion to the "big customer"—the "Frankenstein"—and that's how He Yi ended up in his current situation.

But this was only the first part of Yi Bai's plan.

Cutting off He Yi's arm wasn't the endgame. It was just a setup to make him panic and fall right into the trap.

During this process, Yi Bai only needed to play along with He Yi's plan, nudging him in the right direction, until He Yi couldn't take it anymore and made his move.

When He Yi was finally pushed over the edge, Lina—the nurse at the Third Hospital—would throw the real bomb.

At that point, He Yi would have no choice but to bite the hook.

Greedy ghosts were obsessed with wealth. What they valued most was also their greatest weakness!

Yi Bai was eagerly awaiting the day He Yi was torn to pieces by the enraged "Frankenstein."

But before that...

"Director, I've done everything I can for the body part task. So... can I go back to work now?"

His perfectly timed reminder snapped He Yi back to reality, and the dark glint in his eyes flickered for a moment. "Not so fast. We're short on hands here at the Third Hospital, so those patients with minor conditions should be handled by the other doctors."

"You're the one who treated the Rose Countess, so naturally, I need someone as skilled as you on the front lines, right?"

Yi Bai gave a knowing smile and nodded in agreement.

He Yi immediately pressed forward. "There's a long-term patient in the third ward, bed 108. After surgery, they've been experiencing discomfort and haven't gotten better after staying here for so long. Why don't you take a look?"

"Since you say so, Director, I'd love to see what kind of illness has been dragging on for so long without being treated."

Yi Bai pretended to be intrigued and agreed to the task with gusto.

"Oh, and by the way! If you clear up the patient in the third ward, I've got a few more..."

This time, He Yi was more cautious. It seemed like he was trying to ensure that Yi Bai stayed busy, keeping him tied up and out of the way for good.

He rattled off a list of patients, but Yi Bai couldn't help but notice the ding-ding-ding sound of the game's system alerting him to multiple new hidden tasks.

What should have been a carefully planned series of tasks now seemed like they were being handed to him all at once, thanks to his rather unorthodox approach.
