Thriller!Me? The Death Knight

Chapter 16: The Clown... Is It Me?

Ghost Coins.

In the terrifying world of the game, they were the only form of currency that circulated. They were also the basic reward for human players who completed game tasks.

With enough ghost coins, one could buy useful items in the game's Store, items that would improve one's chances of survival.

As a newcomer to the game, Yi Bai had unlocked a hidden quest. He was likely to complete it easily, with a high probability of success. But even so, he realized that the amount of ghost coins he'd earn from it would probably be very limited—nowhere near enough to cover the Store's insatiable demands. After all, compared to the wealth of someone like He Yi, his own fortune would be a mere pittance!

"This isn't going to be easy," Yi Bai muttered, brow furrowed in frustration.

Killing He Yi was simple enough. But completing the hidden task, then somehow stealing He Yi's vast fortune and killing him without being discovered? That was another matter entirely.

He Yi was a greedy bastard, obsessed with wealth.

That much was clear from the information Yi Bai had gathered using his Insightful Eye. To amass riches, He Yi had used ruthless tactics. He hadn't just preyed on human players—he'd also slaughtered the staff and even the patients at the Third Hospital.

Yi Bai had no doubts. When it came to wealth and his own life, He Yi wouldn't hesitate to choose the former.

"Forget it. No need to rush. The priority right now is finishing the task."

The hidden quest The Secret of the Morgue was nearly completed. The ghoul had already been dealt with. Now all Yi Bai needed to do was select the arm, and the task would be done.

But…

Looking around, the morgue cabinets were empty. The bodies were gone. The only corpses left were dismembered, decaying remnants. It was clear that the "big customer" He Yi mentioned needed a perfect replacement.

If Yi Bai were to choose a mangled limb, he could easily imagine the fury of the "big customer"—and he'd be the one to take the fall!

"Heh... As expected of a sinister, money-hungry bastard. One task, two deadly traps. How brutal!"

A cold, murderous glint flashed in Yi Bai's eyes. If it weren't for the task and He Yi's wealth, he'd have no qualms about barging in and ending it all right now.

After a moment of contemplation, his gaze fell on the severed arm being gnawed on by the ghoul. The limb was gruesome—grotesque, really.

A plan began to take shape in his mind.

"Stop eating!" Yi Bai commanded sharply.

The ghoul, now his "friend" with a friendship level of "open-hearted trust," obediently stopped chewing. It looked up at him, confused.

That's right. When Yi Bai had spent time talking to the ghoul earlier, their relationship had grown remarkably quickly. It was now at the "open-hearted trust" level. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, the ghoul took orders from him without question.

"Come out. No need to hide anymore," Yi Bai called out to where Lina was concealed.

Lina, ever obedient, stepped out from her hiding place. The moment the ghoul saw her, its eyes flared with sudden hostility.

"Grrr!" The ghoul growled menacingly, its body coiling like a spring, ready to pounce.

Its sharp black claws scraped against the floor as it positioned itself in front of Yi Bai, poised to strike.

"Calm down, Lina's one of us," Yi Bai said, stepping toward her and gently pulling her into a hug as though to prove their bond to the ghoul.

Lina, usually so confident and composed, blushed furiously, visibly nervous under Yi Bai's touch. It was hard to believe that this fierce, commanding woman could get so flustered.

The ghoul's hostility slowly ebbed away, its growls turning into confused murmurs.

Yi Bai, seeing the tension lift, didn't let go of Lina just yet. Leaning in close, he whispered, "I've got a new plan. I need your help."

Though they were alone, Yi Bai acted as though he had to be extra cautious. Anyone could see through this act—it was obvious he just wanted to sneak in a little more "physical contact."

Unfortunately, Lina, completely oblivious to his little ploys, didn't pick up on his motives.

"What's the plan? Tell me," she asked, trusting him completely.

"Here's the thing," Yi Bai began, his voice low and serious. "The task He Yi gave me is a trap. All the bodies in the morgue have already been sold off, leaving only scraps—arms and legs that are useless for what the 'big customer' needs."

A flash of anger flickered in Yi Bai's eyes as he spoke. The thought of He Yi's manipulations made him want to kill the bastard himself. Lina's eyes hardened too, filled with the same murderous intent.

"He Yi's 'big customer'—you know who I mean, right?" Yi Bai asked.

"I know," Lina replied.

"Can you get in touch with him? Quietly, without He Yi knowing?"

"I can. What do you need me to do?" Lina answered, completely unaware of the terrifying implications of this request.

"Perfect! You really are my lucky star!" Yi Bai grinned and gave her a thumbs up, clearly pleased with the outcome.

He then explained the plan.

For now, He Yi was untouchable. But Yi Bai had enough resources to pull a small con on him. And in the process, he would set a bait.

He Yi's greed was his greatest weakness. The only thing that would lure him in was a massive sum of wealth. And the so-called "big customer" was the perfect pawn in that game.

He'd also need to use his connection with the Rose Count to make everything fall into place.

Meanwhile, in his office, He Yi leisurely twirled a bloodstained scalpel between his fingers. He imagined Yi Bai lying in a pool of blood, devoured by the ghoul, and a sinister smile curled on his lips. He was already planning the aftermath of Yi Bai's death.

But just then, a knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The anxious voice of the werewolf doctor came through the door, "Boss! We've got a serious problem!"

He Yi frowned. "What now? Come in and speak clearly."

The werewolf doctor burst in, his breath heavy with panic. "Boss... your arm... it's going to be lost!"

"What?" He Yi stared blankly at the doctor, confusion written all over his face. His voice dropped to a low growl. "What are you talking about? My arm?"

"It's... the 'big customer'... They want to transplant your arm!" The werewolf panted, his voice trembling.

Boom!

It was as if a thunderclap had struck He Yi's head. His thoughts went completely blank.

"How could this... How could this happen?" He Yi stammered, struggling to process the information.
