Chapter 41: Chapter Forty-One: Shadows in Pursuit
Chapter Forty-One: Shadows in Pursuit
The forest was silent except for the crunch of boots on dried leaves. Voss led the group, his broad shoulders tense under the weight of the artifact. Mara walked beside him, her daggers sheathed but her hands never far from their hilts. Rin trailed behind, his usual sarcasm subdued as he scanned the treetops for movement.
"How far is the next waypoint?" Rin asked, breaking the quiet.
"Not far," Mara replied, her voice clipped. "If we keep this pace, we'll reach it by nightfall."
"And what happens when we get there?" Rin pressed. "We regroup? Find another cabin to get ambushed in?"
Mara shot him a glare. "You've been complaining nonstop. Do you have a better idea?"
"Yeah," Rin said, gesturing broadly. "How about not carrying the glowy death orb that everyone and their masked grandma seems to want?"
Voss stopped abruptly, turning to face them. "Enough. The artifact isn't going anywhere. It's dangerous, yes, but leaving it behind isn't an option. Until we figure out how to deal with it, we keep moving."
Rin opened his mouth to retort, but Mara silenced him with a look.
---
The Next Step
By the time the sun began to dip below the horizon, they reached the waypoint: a crumbling watchtower nestled among the trees. It was ancient, the stones worn smooth by time, but it provided a clear vantage point and some measure of security.
"This will have to do for the night," Mara said, surveying the structure.
The interior of the tower was musty, filled with cobwebs and debris. Voss placed the artifact on a stone pedestal in the center of the room, its faint glow casting eerie shadows on the walls.
"Cozy," Rin muttered, brushing cobwebs off his jacket. "Nothing like a haunted ruin to really make you feel at home."
"Start a fire," Mara ordered, tossing him a flint. "We'll need the light."
Rin caught the flint with a scowl but complied, muttering under his breath as he worked.
---
Unseen Watchers
As the fire crackled to life, Mara took the first watch, standing by a narrow window that overlooked the forest. Her sharp eyes scanned the darkness, every rustle of leaves and distant animal cry putting her on edge.
"They'll come," Voss said quietly, sitting on the opposite side of the room.
"I know," Mara replied without looking at him.
"They won't stop," Voss continued. "Not until they get what they want."
"That's why we need a plan," Mara said, her tone firm. "We can't keep running blind. The next time they find us, we need to be ready."
Voss nodded but said nothing. His gaze drifted to the artifact, its faint hum filling the silence.
---
Rin's Observation
Rin, now lounging by the fire, studied the artifact from a distance. "So, are we just not going to talk about the fact that this thing seems alive?" he asked.
Mara glanced at him. "What are you talking about?"
"The hum," Rin said, gesturing toward the artifact. "It's not random. It's like… I don't know, a heartbeat or something."
Voss frowned, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the sound. Now that Rin mentioned it, the rhythm did feel disturbingly organic.
"Great," Rin continued, sitting up. "So, not only do we have every cultist and mercenary on our tails, but we're also carrying around something that might have a mind of its own. Feeling better about this already."
---
A Sudden Disturbance
Before anyone could respond, a sharp sound echoed through the forest—a branch snapping underfoot. Mara stiffened, her hand flying to her dagger.
"Did you hear that?" she whispered.
Voss was already on his feet, his sword drawn. "We're not alone."
Rin scrambled to his feet, his hand gripping the hilt of his blade. "Of course we're not. It's always something with you two."
The three of them moved to the windows, peering into the darkness. The firelight flickered, casting long shadows that danced on the walls.
At first, there was nothing—just the wind rustling the leaves. But then, a faint red glow appeared in the distance, moving steadily closer.
"They've found us," Mara said grimly.
---
An Unexpected Encounter
The glow grew brighter, revealing a group of figures cloaked in crimson. There were five of them, their faces obscured by masks. They moved in perfect unison, their footsteps silent as they approached the tower.
"They're coordinated," Voss observed. "Not like the last group."
"Wonderful," Rin muttered. "Can we ever catch a break?"
Mara ignored him, her mind racing. "We can't fight them head-on. Not here. The tower's too small, and they have the advantage in numbers."
"Then what do we do?" Voss asked.
"Delay them," Mara said, her eyes narrowing. "I have an idea, but it's risky."
---
Holding the Line
As the cloaked figures reached the base of the tower, Voss and Rin took up defensive positions by the door. Mara, meanwhile, disappeared into the shadows, her movements silent and calculated.
The first figure stepped into the doorway, their crimson mask glinting in the firelight. Voss met them head-on, his sword clashing against their blade with a resounding clang. Rin joined the fray, his unorthodox fighting style catching the second attacker off guard.
"Nice teamwork!" Rin called out, narrowly dodging a strike. "Maybe we should form a band after this!"
"Focus!" Voss barked, blocking another attack.
---
Mara's Gambit
While the others fought, Mara slipped out of the tower through a hidden passage she'd noticed earlier. Circling around, she climbed a tree overlooking the group of attackers.
From her vantage point, she could see their leader—a figure standing back, observing the fight. They held a staff tipped with a glowing red crystal, its energy pulsing in rhythm with the artifact.
"Gotcha," Mara muttered, pulling a dagger from her belt.
---
The Tide Turns
Back in the tower, Voss and Rin were holding their own, but the fight was taking its toll. The attackers were relentless, their movements precise and coordinated.
"We can't keep this up!" Rin shouted.
Before Voss could respond, a loud cry echoed from outside. The attackers hesitated, their attention shifting toward the sound.
In the confusion, Mara struck. Her dagger flew through the air, embedding itself in the leader's shoulder. The red crystal staff clattered to the ground, its glow dimming instantly.
The attackers faltered, their movements becoming disjointed. Voss seized the opportunity, delivering a powerful strike that sent one of them crashing to the ground.
---
A Narrow Escape
With their leader incapacitated, the remaining attackers retreated, disappearing into the forest as quickly as they had appeared.
Voss and Rin slumped against the walls of the tower, their breaths ragged. Mara rejoined them, her expression grim but satisfied.
"Well, that was fun," Rin said, wiping blood from his blade.
Mara ignored him, picking up the fallen staff. Its red crystal flickered weakly, its energy almost gone.
"What do we do with that?" Voss asked.
"Keep it," Mara said. "It might tell us more about who we're dealing with."
As the fire burned low, the three of them settled into an uneasy silence, knowing that the night's battle was just the beginning.
