Chapter 40: Chapter Forty: Refuge in the Shadows
Chapter Forty: Refuge in the Shadows
The forest thinned as they moved further away from the ambush site. Their pace was slow but steady, the tension palpable in every step. Voss still carried the artifact, its ominous hum persistent, though subdued. Mara stayed close to him, her eyes darting toward the trees, scanning for any signs of pursuit. Rin, trailing slightly behind, was unusually quiet, his typical sarcastic commentary replaced with a focused expression.
"Where are we even going?" Rin finally asked, breaking the heavy silence. His voice, though casual, carried an edge of unease. "We can't just wander around forever. Not unless you want me to become a forest hermit."
"We're heading to a safe house," Mara said without turning. "It's not far from here. We can regroup and figure out our next move."
"Safe house?" Rin raised an eyebrow. "Why didn't we just go there in the first place? Seems like the kind of info that would've been useful before we got ambushed."
Mara shot him a sharp glance. "Because it's a last resort. Using it means we're burned—no more connections, no more resources. It's a final fallback."
"Well, glad to know we're officially in the 'final fallback' stage," Rin muttered. "Very reassuring."
---
A Hidden Haven
The safe house was a modest, weathered cabin tucked deep within the woods. Its exterior was overgrown with moss and vines, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. Mara approached cautiously, her hand on her dagger, and gestured for the others to wait. After a few tense moments, she signaled them forward.
Inside, the cabin was sparse but functional. A small hearth occupied one corner, its ashes long cold. There was a sturdy table with mismatched chairs, a few shelves stocked with supplies, and a cot pushed against the far wall.
Voss placed the artifact on the table, its cloth wrapping damp with sweat and dirt. He sank into one of the chairs, his broad shoulders slumping with exhaustion. Mara immediately went to check the perimeter, her instincts still on high alert. Rin plopped onto the cot, stretching out with an exaggerated sigh.
"Not exactly five-star accommodations, but I'll take it," Rin said, closing his eyes. "Wake me up when it's time to not die."
"Get up," Mara snapped as she re-entered. "This isn't a vacation. We need to secure the area and figure out what we're doing next."
"Fine, fine," Rin groaned, sitting up reluctantly. "But just so we're clear, I'm putting 'forest nap' back on the table for later."
---
The Weight of the Artifact
Voss stared at the artifact, his expression grim. The faint red glow emanating from beneath the cloth seemed to pulse in time with his heartbeat. Its presence was oppressive, filling the small cabin with an almost tangible weight.
Mara joined him at the table, her gaze fixed on the artifact. "We can't keep carrying it like this," she said quietly. "It's draining you, Voss. I can see it."
"I can handle it," Voss replied, though his voice lacked conviction.
"For how long?" Mara countered. "You saw what it did back there. The power it unleashed—it's not natural. It's dangerous."
"I know," Voss admitted, running a hand through his hair. "But we can't abandon it. If the Red Veil gets their hands on this…"
"Then we destroy it," Mara said firmly.
Rin, listening from the cot, sat up abruptly. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. Destroy it? Isn't this thing, like, super ancient and important? You don't just smash priceless artifacts because they're inconvenient."
"It's not about convenience," Mara snapped. "It's about survival."
"Sure, but if we destroy it, doesn't that mean all of this—the ambushes, the running, the near-death experiences—was for nothing?" Rin asked. "Seems like a waste."
Voss looked between them, his brow furrowed. "We don't even know if it can be destroyed."
Mara sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Then we need answers. Someone who can tell us what this thing really is and how to deal with it."

A New Direction
As they debated, the cabin's oppressive atmosphere seemed to grow heavier. The artifact pulsed faintly, its hum rising in pitch. Rin, now on edge, gestured toward the object.
"Is it just me, or is that thing getting louder?" he asked.
Voss and Mara turned their attention to the artifact. The red glow beneath the cloth had intensified, casting eerie shadows on the walls. The hum was unmistakable now, resonating like a heartbeat.
"Something's wrong," Mara said, reaching for her dagger. "It's reacting to something."
Voss stood, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Get ready. We might not be alone."
The cabin door burst open, and a wave of cold air swept inside. Standing in the doorway was a lone figure, cloaked in crimson. Their face was obscured by a mask, but the emblem of the Red Veil was unmistakable.
"Well, this is cozy," the figure said, their voice dripping with mockery. "Mind if I join?"
---
A Deadly Intruder
Voss moved first, his sword flashing as he lunged at the intruder. The figure dodged with almost inhuman speed, their crimson cloak billowing like smoke. Mara followed up with a swift strike, her daggers aimed for vital points. The intruder deflected her attacks effortlessly, their movements fluid and precise.
Rin scrambled to his feet, drawing his blade. "Guess the nap's off," he muttered, charging into the fray.
The cabin erupted into chaos. The confined space made every movement critical, every swing of a weapon perilously close to walls or companions. The intruder fought with an eerie calm, their strikes calculated and deadly.
"Who sent you?" Voss demanded, his voice a growl as he parried a strike.
The figure laughed, the sound cold and mechanical. "You know who. And you know what we want."
"Over my dead body," Voss snarled.
The intruder tilted their head, as if considering the offer. "If you insist."
---
The Power Within
The artifact's hum grew deafening, its glow filling the room. Rin, dodging an attack, noticed it first. "Uh, guys? I think the murder rock is doing something!"
The intruder seemed to sense it too. They turned their attention to the artifact, their stance shifting. "It's reacting… fascinating."
Mara seized the opportunity, lunging at the figure with renewed ferocity. Her daggers found their mark, slicing through the crimson cloak. The intruder staggered, blood staining their side.
Voss grabbed the artifact, its energy coursing through him like fire. The power was overwhelming, but he forced himself to focus. "You want it?" he growled. "Come and take it."
The artifact unleashed a blinding flash of light, forcing everyone to shield their eyes. When the light faded, the intruder was gone, leaving only the faint scent of ozone behind.
---
A Temporary Victory
The trio stood in silence, their breaths heavy. The cabin was in disarray, the walls scorched and the air thick with tension.
"Well, that was fun," Rin said, sheathing his sword. "Anyone else feel like we're in way over our heads?"
Mara ignored him, turning to Voss. "We need answers. Now."
Voss nodded, his grip on the artifact tightening. "We'll find them. But first, we move. They know where we are."
As they prepared to leave, the artifact's glow dimmed once more. Its hum faded into a low, steady rhythm, a reminder of the danger that followed them.
The journey was far from over.
