Chapter 42: Chapter Forty-Two: Whispers of the Artifact

Chapter Forty-Two: Whispers of the Artifact

The night was heavy with tension as the three companions sat in the crumbling watchtower, the faint glow of the artifact casting eerie shadows on the walls. Rin stared at the crimson staff Mara had retrieved, its fractured crystal pulsing faintly like a dying ember.

"So," Rin began, his voice breaking the uneasy silence, "what's the plan now? We wait here for the next round of crazies, or do we keep running until our legs give out?"

Mara didn't look up from where she was crouched near the artifact, inspecting its glowing surface. "We move at first light. This place isn't safe anymore."

"Was it ever?" Rin muttered, poking at the dying fire with a stick.

Voss ignored their bickering, his gaze fixed on the artifact. Its hum was stronger now, reverberating through the room like a low, haunting melody. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was... watching them.

"It's changing," Voss said suddenly, his voice low.

Mara glanced at him, her brow furrowing. "What do you mean?"

"The artifact," Voss replied, stepping closer. "The hum—it's louder. And the glow... it wasn't this intense before."

Mara leaned in, her sharp eyes narrowing as she studied the object. She hated to admit it, but Voss was right. The artifact was more vibrant now, its light pulsating in a rhythm that felt almost... alive.

Rin tilted his head, pretending to listen closely. "You think it's trying to tell us something? Like, 'Hey guys, thanks for carrying me, but now I'm going to explode and take you all with me'?"

Mara rolled her eyes. "Always the optimist, aren't you?"

A Voice in the Dark

As the group debated, a faint whisper echoed through the room. It was so soft at first that they all dismissed it as the wind. But then it came again, clearer this time—a low, melodic murmur that sent chills down their spines.

"Did... anyone else hear that?" Rin asked, his voice unusually serious.

Voss nodded, his grip tightening on his sword. "It's coming from the artifact."

Mara exchanged a wary glance with Voss before stepping closer to the glowing object. The whisper grew louder, forming words that seemed to bypass her ears and go straight to her mind.

"Release me..."

Mara stumbled back, her hand flying to her dagger. "It's... talking."

"Talking?" Rin's eyebrows shot up. "Great. First it hums, now it talks. What's next? Is it going to start walking around?"

"Be serious, Rin," Voss snapped, his gaze fixed on the artifact.

The whisper came again, louder this time, filling the room with its eerie presence.

"I can help you... but you must let me out."

The Artifact's Offer

"Let you out?" Mara repeated, her voice sharp. "What does that even mean?"

The artifact's glow intensified, its hum vibrating through their very bones.

"I am imprisoned. Bound to this form. Release me, and I will grant you the power to destroy your enemies."

"Yeah, that doesn't sound suspicious at all," Rin said, taking a step back. "Totally trustworthy glowing orb offering ultimate power. What could possibly go wrong?"

Voss ignored him, his jaw tightening. "Who are you? And why are you imprisoned?"

The artifact pulsed, its light flickering like a heartbeat.

"I was once a guardian, a protector of worlds. But I was betrayed and sealed away by those who feared my power. Now I am but a fragment of what I once was."

Mara's eyes narrowed. "And what do you gain if we release you?"

"Freedom. Nothing more. I have no desire to harm you—only to aid you in your fight. The ones who pursue you... they are my enemies as well."

---

A Dangerous Decision

Mara stood, her mind racing. If the artifact was telling the truth, its power could give them a much-needed advantage against the relentless enemies hunting them. But if it was lying...

"Can we trust it?" she asked, looking to Voss.

Voss hesitated, his eyes never leaving the artifact. "I don't know. But we can't keep running forever. If this thing can help us, we might not have a choice."

"Or," Rin interjected, "we could chuck it off a cliff and see if that solves the problem."

"No one's chucking anything," Mara snapped. She turned back to the artifact. "If we release you, how do we know you won't turn on us?"

"I swear on my existence," the artifact replied, its voice resonating with an almost painful sincerity. "Aid me, and I will aid you. Together, we can destroy those who seek to enslave us."

A Midnight Ambush

Before they could decide, a loud crash shattered the tense atmosphere. The door to the tower burst open, and a group of masked figures stormed in, weapons drawn.

"Looks like we're out of time," Rin said, drawing his blade.

Voss and Mara moved into position, their weapons at the ready. The artifact's glow flared brighter, casting an otherworldly light over the room.

"Release me," it urged. "And I will fight alongside you."

"Do it," Voss said through gritted teeth as he blocked an incoming strike.

Mara hesitated for only a moment before slamming her dagger into the artifact's surface. The room erupted in a blinding flash of light, and the artifact's hum rose to a deafening crescendo.

When the light faded, a figure stood where the artifact had been—a towering, ethereal being with eyes that burned like molten gold.

"Well," Rin said, panting as he fended off another attacker. "That's... new."

The being raised its hand, and a wave of golden energy surged through the room, scattering the attackers like leaves in the wind. The few who managed to stay upright quickly retreated, their cries of fear echoing into the night.

A New Ally

As the dust settled, the being turned to face them. It was humanoid in shape but radiated an aura of immense power, its form flickering like a flame.

"You have my thanks," it said, its voice deep and resonant. "I am free at last."

"Yeah, great," Rin said, sheathing his sword. "But maybe next time, give us a little warning before you go full light show."

Mara stepped forward, her gaze steady. "Who are you? And what happens now?"

The being inclined its head. "I am Luthien, the Guardian of Balance. And now, I am in your debt."

Voss exchanged a glance with Mara, his expression grim. They had gained a powerful ally, but the battle was far from over.
