Chapter 82: Memory
The moment Xane heard the manipulation behind the incident from Marcin, deeply buried memories of his past life flashed through his head.
When, just like any other teen, he was also chasing after his dream.
A dream to make the world a better place. To be like his dad, a great law enforcer.
A dream of capturing the evil and providing assistance to the good. It was a naïve dream of a teenager.
But all of this was shattered because of one false claim.
Xane remembered the day when, just like any other day, a teen walked into the school.
He greeted everyone as usual, but for some reason, people avoided him.
The teen looked unconcerned and did not think much about it. He just continued toward his class.
Xane saw the classroom full of people, all chattering. Some of them looked at the boy, whispering to each other, while others seemed too busy with their own topics.
Even the teen boy laughed with two of his friends. But soon the bell rang, and it was time for the first class.
Everyone rushed back to the seats, waiting for their teacher.
Soon, an obese middle-aged man walked into the class. Unlike every other day, he looked a bit pale.
All the students stood up and shouted in unison, "Good morning, teacher."
The middle-aged man just nodded to them and then scanned the classroom.
It was clear he was looking for someone. Soon, his eyes dropped onto the teen.
Not wasting any more time, the homeroom teacher called out. "Xane, come here. You have been summoned to the principal's office."
Everyone paused for a bit and looked at the skinny Xane with envy.
Xane's friend, who sat ahead of him, even whispered, "Just what kind of new achievement?"
Xane just shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know. There are a couple of things I recently took part in."
Xane stood up, not thinking much of it, as he was used to being called by the principal.
Being the topper of the class, he took part in many interschool competitions, and every excellent result produced by him improved the school's reputation.
In return, there were multiple times he received multiple special awards and medals from the school.
As he moved out of the class, he saw another teacher standing outside.
Xane instantly recognized her and bowed. "Good morning, teacher."
She paused for a bit, and for a moment, he saw fear in her eyes. But then she smiled at him. "Oh, good morning, Xane."
Even though she tried to act normally, Xane was always sharp, so he easily noticed her glancing at his homeroom teacher from time to time.
Both of them seemed to be talking to each other through their gazes. Although he found it weird, he thought it must be the recent school-wide inspection that troubled them.
He knew, just like student tests, this school-wide inspection was the teachers' test.
Miss Laker was just a new addition, and as for his homeroom teacher, he was also a bit unlucky.
But those things did not concern him, so he bowed. "I will see you later, ma'am."
He was about to move toward the principal's office when Miss Laker suddenly shouted in panic, "Wait! I am coming with you."
This sudden burst confused him, but it wasn't like he could refuse her. So, both of them slowly started walking down the corridor toward the principal.
As they continued, Xane noticed that whenever he passed by a class, for some reason, the teachers of that class all glanced toward him.
Some of them looked fearful, others confused, and some had unfriendly looks.
It really started to weird him out, but soon they reached the principal's office.
Miss Laker moved ahead, knocked on the door, and shouted, "Ma'am, we are here."
The way she said it instantly made it clear to him that it wasn't that both their destinations were the same. She was actually assigned to bring him to the principal's office.
These things really weirded him out. He thought that maybe this time his performance in the event was bad.
Did the principal call him to punish him?
This made him tense. Even though he never experienced her punishment himself, from the troublemakers in his class, he knew just how bad it could be.
Those guys even called her the devil with glasses.
'But… if it's just my poor performance, she's not going to punish me hard, right?' Even though Xane thought this, he still gulped in tension.
Soon, both of them heard a cold, snarly voice. "Come in."
Miss Laker wasted no time and slowly opened the door.
He saw the principal sitting in her chair, staring directly at him.
Xane paused for a bit when he saw she really looked angry right now. 'Shit… don't tell me she fought with her husband again.'
It was another thing he knew from others that there were days when the principal seemed extra angry. On those days, punishments became a notch harsher.
He cursed his luck and walked in. As he passed Miss Laker, he noticed she did not seem to enter the office. It was weird.
Still, being an excellent student, he bowed to the principal. "Good morning, ma'am."
He was waiting for her to respond, but to his surprise, he heard a clicking sound from behind him.
It instantly hit him that someone had just closed the principal's office door.
He was about to turn around when he felt a firm grip on his neck. A few more people rushed from the side, pushed him down to the floor, and dragged his hands to the back.
Xane shouted in panic, "Hey! Who is that?"
He heard a deep voice next to his ear. "Kid, I advise you not to struggle, or we might have to break a bone or two."
That instantly sent shivers down his spine as hundreds of possibilities emerged in his mind. Is this a thief? Is the school under attack? What about the principal, ma'am?
But as he turned his head and saw the blue uniform, he froze.
He instantly recognized that dress. After all, it was his dream. This was the uniform of the local law protectors. The police.
