Chapter 203 - Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures…
With the synchronization between Adam and the Empress complete, a cold, focused fury now coursed through his veins, mingling with the Empress's own raw rage... They were ready.
The Superior Dracling, a grotesque sight of obese flesh and small wings, did not hesitate. It let out a guttural roar, shook its massive body, and launched itself at Adam with a speed that belied its enormous size, with a deep and bone-shaking tremor radiating from its movements.
Adam, with unyielding determination in his face, simply forced a wry smile. He raised one of his hands, preparing to invoke his [Malzaphir's Forbidden Tome. Vol 13], the very core of his most powerful skills... However, nothing happened. A small, almost insignificant wisp of cursed energy appeared in his hand and then dissipated with a sound similar to a balloon deflating, a pathetic, anticlimactic sound that was completely out of place in the fierce battle.
"Eh?..."
Adam said, his voice a bewildered whisper, just to experience a moment of pure confusion that nearly cost him his life. He was just able to move in the last second with a powerful jump, grabbing Chloe's body and pulling her out of the way of the Dracling's devastating, earth-shattering blow.
He barely managed to dodge the attack, rolling on the ground with Chloe in his arms, using his own body to shield her from any further harm.
"What the hell was that!?"
Adam screamed, his voice a mixture of confusion and anger.
"Why didn't my skill work!?"
He felt a powerful, disorienting wave of panic as his most powerful ability had failed him. He "looked" at the Empress's voice, whose mind was now a constant presence in his head, waiting for a response. The Undead Empress responded with a tone of pure exasperation.
"I don't have almost any cursed energy! You used the last of what I had to summon that Demon-Type ghost arm just moments ago!"
Adam, who was still very confused, asked.
"But why don't we have any cursed energy?! I had plenty of it in our inner world!"
"That's because one of your stupid companions sealed almost all of my power in an odious cube, and he's not here to give it back to me!"
The Empress screamed back using his own voice. The scene was very surreal, because for anyone seeing him, it was as if Adam was talking and answering to himself, since both he and the Empress had control over his lips.
"Did you honestly think I would have accepted your help if I had all of my power?!"
Adam's face lit up with a sudden, profound realization.
"Wait… Ooh..."
He said, his voice a soft, quiet whisper.
"So that's why the inner world was losing power... That's why I was able to use my own skills in there. Now I get it…"
He was so lost in thought that he almost didn't notice the Dracling, which was now flying back toward him, its massive claws extended and its eyes filled with a primal, savage hunger.
"Okay."
Adam said, his voice filled with a newfound determination.
"Then Plan B."
A massive, sharp appendage, like the leg of a giant spider, shot out from within his body, intercepting the monster's claws. The Dracling, whose eyes were burning in anger, let out a deep, guttural roar as it was blocked once more. Adam's [Overmind Parasite] was an item of Rank A+ after all, one of the most powerful and dangerous items he knew.
His [Physical Manipulation] and [Parasitic Mutation] skills were in full effect as well, creating a lot of those spider-like sharp legs, which Adam always felt comfortable with for some reason. He may not have been in the best condition, but the parasite was not dependent on cursed energy, so its appendages were more than enough to stop the Dracling's attack.
Adam looked at the monster with a cold, determined gaze.
"I need some context."
He said, his voice a low, cold whisper.
"What are we fighting?"
The Empress's voice let out a deep and exasperated angrily answer.
"How the hell you don't know?! You're the one who was supposed to be watching through me! Didn't you have so much control over the inner world, so why didn't you pay attention!?"
Adam blinked, almost embarrassed.
"Hey… I'm new to this whole possession shenanigans."
The Empress simply sighed in exasperation again, but she answered him.
"We're fighting the sons of a dragon god or something like that. The point is that they are entities full of a strange type of energy, but at their base, they are a form of cursed energy, I know you can feel it too."
Adam let out a long, weary sigh.
"Well, if that's the case, then this is a very bad time to have our abilities sealed."
He then looked at Chloe, who was still unconscious in his arms. The Dracling, whose eyes were filled with a sadistic anticipation, simply laughed and started to charge at them again, but its attention was not on Adam this time; it was on the wounded girl, seeing that she was the weakest prey. The boy, however, would not let that happen.
The physical combat between the obese Dracling and Adam, with his giant spider-like appendages, was a ferocious, brutal clash. The air was filled with the sound of high-pitched shrieks as if it was steel against steel that echoed through the chaotic landscape.
Adam's appendages moved with an insane speed, a blur of motion that a normal human would not be able to follow. His attacks were relentless, but the Dracling was an equal, if not a superior, foe. Its massive claws, which were as long as spears, moved with a speed that didn't make any sense with its size, and every blow was a sonic boom that shook the ground. The parasitic mutated libs were strong enough to block every attack, but they were not able to do any damage to the monster's skin. The Dracling, which was comparable to a monstrous, immovable object, would simply absorb every blow without a single scratch, its laughter echoing through the air as it reveled in the challenge.
Not far from there, Charles and Samantha had used the timeout to recover enough to join the fight once more. Charles, whose body was a mess of cuts and bruises, moved with a newfound energy as his sword, which had been imbued with a powerful fire, tore through the air. He lunged forward, and with a powerful, spinning slash, he aimed directly for the Dracling's eyes.
The monster, which was focused solely on Adam, was not prepared for this, and the flaming blade hit its eye with a sickening crunch. The Dracling roared full of pain, flinched, and took a step back, giving the blond swordsman and Adam enough time to reorganize.

Samantha, who had been watching the entire time, immediately dematerialized her huge fork and knife and swept across the floor until he was next to Chloe's body, which Adam had had to leave on the floor. For a moment, Adam was confused.
"Who the hell are they?"
He thought, his mind racing.
"Are they members of the other team? Did we have contact after all?"
The Empress, through Adam's mouth, simply scoffed, a deep, annoyed sound that was a perfect overlay of both voices.
"Don't worry about it, they are not enemies."
She said.
"But..."
Adam started.
"There's no 'but'!"
She screamed, her voice a terrifying, powerful sound. Adam, though he was not entirely convinced, simply said.
"Okay."
He then turned his attention to Samantha, who was now holding Chloe and giving her a bear-shaped cookie with the utmost care.
"What are you doing!?"
He screamed suddenly. Samantha looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"She'll be fine!"
She screamed.
"This 'recipe' will close her wounds in a minute! Just focus on the Dracling!"
Adam, whose mind was a maelstrom of confusion and uncertainty even if he feelt the Empress calming down, looked at Chloe's wounds, which were now slowly closing. He could tell that Samantha was telling the truth, so he obeyed and regained focus on the battle. He then looked at Charles, who was now fighting with an unnatural ferocity, even if he was notably wounded. Using his [Cursed Vision], he was able to see Charles's status and understand why he was still standing despite his severe injuries.

The fact that the skill was level 10 was impressive, and Adam could tell by the name that it was a skill that had to do with his abnormal resilience, although he couldn't be sure, yet it was comforting to have an ally in this situation.
The Dracling, which was now laughing, had fully recovered and was flying toward them again. Charles screamed.
"Look out!"
Just in time for Adam to turn, and with his appendages, he prepared to counterattack. The two of them, Charles with his flaming sword and Adam with his spider-like limbs, moved with ferocity. The blonde guy lunged forward, and with a powerful, spinning slash, he aimed for the monster's side. The Dracling, with a deep, guttural laugh, simply raised its massive, grotesque arm, and the sword, with a sickening crunch, was deflected.
Charles lunged forward, but the Dracling, with a powerful roar, launched a torrent of black fire at him. The guy gritted his teeth. He knew he couldn't deflect the fire without it hitting Chloe and Samantha, but he also knew he couldn't just stand there and take the hit due to the cursed effect of the flames.
However, before he could decide what to do, Adam pulled his appendages back, and to Charles's horror, he ran headfirst into the torrent of black fire.
"Yes!"
He screamed, a triumphant, almost insane look on his face. The fire surrounded and consumed him, but instead of burning him, it swirled around him, and in a moment of pure shock, the Dracling and Charles watched as the torrent of cursed fire spiraled as in a vacuum and was completely absorbed by Adam's mouth. The boy had used his [Cursed Fire Consumption] skill, eating the fire as if it were a delicacy, which also served to recover a bit of stamina.
The Dracling, whose eyes were now filled with a mix of shock and rage, roared again and attacked with its claws. Adam met its claws with his appendages, being supported by Charles, who was still a bit dumbfounded about what had happened.
The fight continued for what felt like an eternity. Charles and Adam were managing to hold the monster at bay, but they were not making any progress, and they were unable to move from their spot until Chloe had recovered. Adam was slowly beginning to feel the effects of the exhaustion; if he hadn't consumed the fire earlier, then he would have already fallen severely tired by now.
But out of nowhere, he was distracted for a moment when he heard Chloe cough; the Empress forced his body to turn around and look at her, which was a fatal mistake. The Dracling saw its chance, took advantage of the second of carelessness, and evaded all the attacks, sending a massive claw that would have pierced Adam's head if not for Charles, who, with a powerful swing of his sword, blocked the attack with all the strength he had left.
Adam saw it and barely reacted after the attack, protecting Charles from a counterattack and using his mutated limbs to resume his stalemate with the Dracling. Samantha, who was now standing up after making sure that Chloe was recovering without issues, went near him with a desperate expressión on her face.
"Is that all you can do?"
She screamed.
"We can't win like this!"
Adam, whose mind was a turbulent simply looked at her with a calm, patient expression.
"I don't have any other options! I'm still thinking of a plan!"
He screamed back. And Samantha, whose face was filled with a mixture of anger and desperation, looked at Charles.
"Are you sure!?"
She screamed, while the blond boy, who was at his limit and recovering the fast as he could, looked at her.
"Yes, I am!"
He screamed back, and Samantha simply nodded.
"Okay!"
She said, her voice filled with a newfound determination.
"Then this is our only option!"
Samantha then turned to Adam, screaming.
"Do you know anyone who can counter dragons!?"
Adam, confused and without stopping the attacks of his long spider appendages, said.
"What? No!"
But Samantha screamed again.
"Do you know anyone with any kind of connection to dragons!?"
Adam was about to say "No" again, but then a face flashed in his mind, and the Empress's as well. A woman he didn't exactly "know" but had dealt with in some way.
"Well, something like that, I guess? But…"
He said, but before he could ask why, Samantha screamed.
"Good enough!"
And shoved a snack into his mouth so quickly that Adam didn't have time to react. The snack, which was spicy and dry, had an almost metallic taste, and Adam couldn't help but chew it by reflex. Immediately after, a couple of system's messages began to pop up in front of him.

Adam was at a loss for words. What was happening? Samantha, on the other hand, had her eyes wide with a mix of shock and awe, staring at the system message.
"Wait, so you were Adam Sch..."
But before she could finish, a flash of light blinded everyone. The Dracling, whose massive body was still shaking from the impact, and the users present, all had to cover their eyes. However, the Dracling was the first to recover from the light, and it saw its chance.
It roared, and with its claws extended, it shot toward them again, ready to end them all… But before it could, a woman's laugh echoed through the air as a massive boom. Then, suddenly, a large, red draconic claw appeared out of nowhere and slammed into the Dracling's face, piercing its skin for the first time and leaving a deep, painful gash on its right cheek. The monster was sent flying back, looking in disbelief at what had just happened.
Everyone finally managed to recover and looked up, seeing that a woman had materialized in the middle of them. She had long, flowing reddish hair that fell down her back in a chaotic mess of curls and a pair of terrifying yellow eyes that seemed to glow with an inner light. She was dressed in a black jacket over a white button-up shirt and a pair of dark pants. Her face was contorted into a wide, ear-to-ear grin that showed off a set of sharp fangs, and her gaze held a somber look, as if she were a predator who had just found her prey.
A final system warning appeared before them.
[User Solène Beaumont has been summoned to the scenario!] |
Without losing a moment, the woman looked at Adam with a strange pleasure on her face.
"I'm here as you wished for, let's fight, Adam Scholar!"
She said while licking her lips with her long tongue. Adam, in utter disbelief, simply said.
"You!? … Why?!"
