Chapter 60: Follow up plan
Under the circumstances in the army, prince Theodore was forced to make camp for the day.
Things were far from good for him at this point.
The combined feudal armies had collapsed and all the nobles were either dead or ran away.
Their knights and soldiers were the same as well. An unknown enemy has beaten up thousands of soldiers, many of whom were trained knights or mercenaries.
After the last attack during that completely broke down the feudal armies and killed some soldiers of the Royal Army as well, no more attacks took place.
This gave him the chance to settle down and camp.
The Luftwaffe gliders still maintained watch over the enemy but didn't take any more actions.
A large camp of hundreds of tents was set up.
In the center was the huge tent of the prince that flew the black and white flag of the Kingdom of Hohenstaufia.
Surrounding the prince's tent were the tents of his generals. These were not as large as that of the prince but was still comfortable and big enough for the generals.
These tents were surrounded by the tents of the knights who'd guard the prince and the generals.
Finally, the tents for the soldiers and slaves were on the outer side.
These tents were small and housed from 5-10 soldiers each.
The horses were tied to big nails hammered in the ground all over the camp.
Only a single giant bonfire was lit, to Illuminate the whole place.
The siege weapons were also stored in the open scattered all over the place.
As the troops went about their activities like eating, drinking or chatting about the events of the day, something happened.
"Kommandant, what do we do next? From the Luftwaffe report, it seems the enemy won't advance in this direction anymore."
The man speaking to Erika was the Colonel in command of the Grossdeutschland regiment.
He was worried that the fortifications they've built will become useless since it's clear that the enemy won't advance anymore.
Some more senior officers from the Regiment and Erika's staff were also present.
The place they stood in was a dugout made the troops of the regiment to function as the regiment command post.
It was well covered by tree leaves and grass to conceal from enemies.
Inside the dugout was a table that had a broad map of the zone through which the regiment was placed, and the enemy was encamped.
"Okay I think a night action would be enough to route the remaining enemies."
Erika said after thinking for a while.
"You want to use the entire regiment?" asked the Colonel.
He was curious as to what Erika planned.
"No, just use the scout company." She said calmly.
"Attack at midnight. At that time the enemy must be in deep sleep. Arm them with extra grenades." She said looking at the colonel.
"Tell them to lob the grenades into the tent as they pass by and shoot down any enemy that they encounter."
The colonel understood the course of action to be taken.
He immediately called the commander of the regiment scout company and explained him what to do.
The captain of the scouts immediately started to prepare his soldiers.
The horses were fed and carriages mounted with machine guns were attached to their backs.
Extra ammo and gun barrels were loaded in each cart and the soldiers were told to rest for the day.
In all, the scout company had 20 carts, each mounted with a machine gun and carried 3 people.
One gunner, one loader and the driver. The gunner also acted as the commander for the carriage.
After issuing the orders, Erika left the fortress along with Emil.
"Sigh, it's been too long. I must meet my parents and see how things are going." She said.
Emil supported the idea and encouraged her.
However, she also planned to return the next day to check on the situation.
On the way to return, they picked Bauer up from the barracks.
In the palace things now calmed down and everyone was able to let go at least some of their worries.
Hanna and Maruschka were now feeling guilty for not being besides Erika.
Both of them thought how they would stick to Erika no matter what.
Hanna had some other thoughts on her mind as well.
After everything that happened in the past few days, she felt that it was too much of a burden on the young girl.
She felt guilty of relying on her to resolve the whole situation, while being even more useless than Maruschka.
Meanwhile, the adults were speaking sitting in the sofas of the guest room. Landsturm mentions something that sowed a panic.
"It was a good thing that the knights were out with the prince at that time when we were rescued."
"Huh, why did the prince leave with his knights?" Lady Landsturm asked curiously.
"Ah, I forgot, prince was planning to invade our duchy."
Everyone panicked hearing this.
Maruschka and Hanna felt more despair.
"Who ever, is call the knight captain, now." Walther shouted.
A servant immediately rushed to the knights barracks to fetch the captain.
He returned soon with the captain. He entered the room and kneeled in front of Walther.
The captain was an experienced warrior and was wearing a silver armour that had the coat of arms of the Raubenbraum etched in it.
"How can I help you milord?" He asked placing a hand on his chest.
"Immediately gather all the knights and their squires. We must prepare for war." He ordered.
"Our enemy is in tens of thousands, we can't deal with them only with knights and squires, tell the city guards to start a campaign of enrolling civilians who volunteer and hire as much adventurers as you can."
"As you say milord." The knight bowed his head.
As he was about to leave another voice was heard.
"Cancel that order please. The Royal Army is already being dealt with."
Everyone was surprised at this familier sweet voice.
They looked and saw that it was Erika. She had just entered the room and was speaking calmly.
Instead of the family meeting she just spoke about the situation.
"Father, you don't have to take any actions against the Royal Army. They are all as good as gone." She said nonchalantly.
Behind her stood, Bauer and Emil, all three of them remembered to change their clothes in the barracks before returning home.
"Though the Royal Army will be dealt with tonight, it's better to lie a little for now." Erika thought.
Before anyone could react, Hanna and Maruschka were both all over Erika.
Tears rolled down their eyes as they saw the girl return safe and sound.
Erika felt a little awkward seeing the two girls hugging her like their mother.
She patted their heads couldn't stop herself from, speaking to them like they are her children.
"There, there, it's okay. I am back. Nothing bad will happen."
Hanna and Maruschka both felt ashamed. Their faces blushed as they let go of Erika.
It was like adding insult to injury for both of them.
First they relied on Erika to get them out of trouble while doing nothing, and if that was not enough she is now treating them as children.
Now the duchess and the duke swarmed her.
"Why did you run away after returning? Where were you? What do you mean by the Royal Army is already defeated?!"
These types of questions was heaped on her.
Erika couldn't even think of how to start answering them. She was tired and confused.
"Ahem, milady is very tired after staying out all these days. Please let her rest before asking anymore."
The person to speak now was Bauer.
At first she and Emil both laughed at the situation, but now she had to do something.
"Alright, Bauer take Erika to her room, help her with whatever she needs." the duchess said understanding the situation.
"As you wish mistress." Bauer bowed her head.
As she was about to take Erika to her room, Maruschka and Hanna stopped her.
"Lady Bauer, you must be tired as well. Let me take care of her." Maruschka said as she clung to Erika.
"Huh, why would you take care of her?!" Hanna said as she also clung to Erika on the opposite side.
"As a noble, only I can understand what lady Erika requires. Also you have been taking care of us all this time. So you must be tired as well."
The two of them started their catfight again. While a drop of sweat ran down behind Erika's head and everyone else present laughed.
"Alright, why don't you both go with Erika and freshen up yourselves as well." The duchess said.
Hanna's mother felt a little sad after Erika left with Hanna and Maruschka.
She wanted to thank Erika for rescuing her husband.
In Erika's room, both Maruschka and Hanna started fighting amongst themselves again over various matters.
When Erika said that she would go inside for a bath, the two of them wanted to follow her.
Though Erika rejected any such idea firmly.
But they still followed her inside, which made all of them embarrassed.
Both Hanna and Maruschka blushed seeing Erika in the bath.
While they also argued with one another over things like who'd wash her back or her hair etc.
Both of them wanted to be the only one to help Erika.
