Reincarnated Wehraboo's Revenge

Chapter 59: Border skirmish

As soon as the two nobles, entered the palace, they were swarmed.

Lord Landsturm was hugged by his wife and daughter while Erika's mother hugged the her husband.

Tears rolled down everyone's eyes at the reunion.

Though the separation was not that long, the circumstances had changed everything.

Maruschka stood and looked at the reunion scene before them.

She felt a little lonely but still happy and proud of Erika to have successfully pulled the rescue.

"So where's Erika?" Walther asked after noticing her absence.

He was still in tears but had so many questions to ask to his daughter.

"I don't know." Duchess replied.

The glow in her face died down like a withered flower. She averted her husband's eyes.

"What do you mean?! Where is my daughter?!" Walther lost his composer.

"I only know that she is safe somewhere in the territory. She sent Bauer a few moments ago to assure us." Duchess said, looking towards the floor.

Walther calmed himself down.

"Its okay, since she's safe. That girl rescued us from the royal palace. Who can touch her."

He tried to calm his wife down.

"So what happened? How was she able to rescue you from the palace?" Duchess asked.

Walther though didn't know the soldiers entered the palace, described how things went.

On the Landsturm side, the family reunion was still going on.

Maruschka seeing them thought that the entire Landsturm family is too much emotional, while the Raubenbraum family was more calm and calculating. Erika even more so than her parents.

"How nice it'd be if I were a part of this family!" She thought.

While this was going on, The Royal Army crossed into the borders of Raubenbraum Duchy.

The feudal armies of the nobles were in the forefront of the force.

This force was followed by prince Theodore who personally led the Royal Army behind them.

When the gliders monitoring them returned and reported this, Stiegler immediately dispatched the entire Luftwaffe.

Four gliders were launched in groups of two. They flew towards the approaching enemy.

Stiegler also reported to Erika about it.

The soldiers in the combined force of the kingdom was marching merrily. They were careless about the development on the other camp.

To the nobles in the lead, their target was still far away.

Under the prince's orders they had taken a path that would require days to reach the duchy's main city.

The prince's justification was to allow the force to rich the city without being noticed.

From the absence of the duchy's knights and armies to block them, it seemed the plan was successful.

However, no one had noticed the predator stalking them from the sky.

Suddenly the entire marching column came to a staggering halt.

Someone shouted, "look there are giant birds in the sky."

Everyone looked at the sky to see two of the unknown birds dive in on them.

The pilots in the gliders pulled the control stick down and positioned their gliders with the marching column of the combined force.

Brrrr... the pilot fired the glider's machine guns on the enemy front.

The entire column was soon in disarray. One after another, soldiers dropped down.

They couldn't see what was happening. The birds were still not close enough to attack them with their claws or beaks.

But still, soldiers were dying one after another. The knights in the horses were in an even precarious position.

While one glider attacked the marching infantry column, the other one targeted the knights.

Many horses dropped dead while the others panicked and ran in whichever way they could.

The knights on their back desperately pulled the bridles to control them.

However, it was all in vain it seemed that something has taken over the horses and making them go wild.

The bewildered and painful neigh of the ones that were shot by the gliders' machinegun made the others panic.

In the confusion, many soldiers behind were crushed under the out of control horses.

Soon the gliders climbed up breaking their attack. They were too close to the ground and had to pull up and align to attack again.

"Crossbows and archers attack!" A commander tried to counter attack the giant birds pounding them.

The commanding nobles tried to take chance of this break to bring their forces back into formations.

Soon the gliders aligned with the enemy column and dive in on them again.

This time the archers and heavy crossbowmen tried to mount some resistance.

They fired all the arrows they can at the giant birds.

However, the gliders were too fast to be hit by crossbows and archers and most of the arrows missed.

A few arrows that did hit just deflected from the gliders' body without doing any harm.

The gliders mowed down the archers and crossbowmen with their machine guns.

There was no way the kingdom's forces could resist them. Whatever, discipline and formation still maintained were soon broken down.

To hammer the last nail in the coffin, two more gliders dived into the column and started to mow down troops in the rear and center.

Most of the nobles commanding the force were shot as well, breaking down the chain of command.

The knights were the first to run away. Some involuntarily, unable to control their horses while others to save their lives.

Many fell down from their panicked horses and got run over by them.

Foot soldiers ran in any directions they could, most trying to run to the rear.

After strafing for some time the gliders ran out of ammo and returned back. More gliders were sent to replace them.

During this pause, the soldiers on the ground ran towards the rear directly towards the prince.

When the prince noticed that the feudal armies in front of him had collapsed, he prepared for what was to come.

He prepared the Royal Army to act as barrier troops to prevent the feudal armies from retreating.

The soldiers stood along the muddy road and pointed their spears forward at the retreating soldiers.

The gliders only dived on feudal army and disrupted their actions.

It was a strategy to make the entire force breakdown.

The idea was quite simple: break the front and the rear will collapse in itself.

Though the front rear and center of the feudal armies did collapse the Royal Army behind did not.

They positioned themselves to prevent the others from fleeing while the knights surrounded the prince to protect him.

When the retreating soldiers and knights from the feudal armies reached them, they shouted at them to stop at once.

Seeing the spears pointed towards them, the ones leading the retreat stopped but were pushed forward by the ones in the back.

Many retreating soldiers died falling under the feet of their comrades or struck by the spears of the Royal Army.

In just half an hour, the feudal armies had collapsed and the enemy advance inside the duchy was halted.

With many knights and the commanding nobles dead or wounded, there was no way attack could press on.

Prince Theodore was forced to camp. Which was again strafed by the luftwaffe gliders causing even more chaos.

As the tired soldiers sat to rest and increase their morale, they were strafed by the newly dispatched gliders.

This time, prince Theodore was busy trying to figure out what had happened along with his generals and was unable to deploy the Royal Army as barrier troops.

Panicked and afraid from being attacked by an unknown and unbeatable foe for the second time, the remaining soldiers and knights from the feudal forces completely ran away.

In about an hour, an entire army of thousands of soldiers and knights collapsed.

When the gliders returned and reported about the collapse and retreat of the enemy ground troops, the luftwaffe command was pleased.

This was their first combat operation and they won a significant victory.

Stiegler proudly reported this incident to Erika and bragged about it to her and the Heer officers.

Erika praised Stiegler and the pilots, speaking to them personally over the telephone while the Heer officers turned red in envy.

They couldn't wait for proving themselves as well and the opportunity arose that very night.
