Volume 1 Chapter 30
While waiting at the counter, several customers came into the store in succession.
“Sorry for the wait. That’ll be 25 Denarius.”
The baker quickly prepared the wheat flour I needed. I paid the full amount and stepped out of the bakery, raising my right hand.
A chain shot out from my sleeve, wrapping around the wrist of an apparently innocent bystander in the crowd.
“Sir, could you please return the 233 Denarius that belong to me?”
“Wha…?!”
“You used the [Steal] skill on me.”
While waiting for my wheat flour, I didn’t turn around, but I was aware of what was happening in the store. On the surface, it looked like a few customers came in, found the baker absent, and left. But in reality, someone used the [Steal] skill on me and took 233 Denarius from my pocket.
Their accomplices were nearby, and upon seeing their friend ensnared by me, they all showed signs of unexpected shock.
“Hey… what do we do if we get caught?”
“We messed up, how are we going to explain this?”
They were acting as a group. Their initial plan was probably to distract the baker and me, and then proceed with the theft. There’s no surveillance or anything, and I happened to be facing away from them. The baker was in the back fetching wheat flour, so they executed their theft.
“How dare you falsely accuse me!”
The man’s face turned red as he argued back.
Seems like he’s not going to admit it.
It’s strange, though. Given my appearance, I shouldn’t be a target for thieves. Stealing from a noble’s servant is like disrespecting the noble themself.
From the crowd, a male adventurer stepped forward to defend me.
“Admitting your crime can lessen your punishment. Don’t be stubborn; return this maid’s Denarius.”
Another handsome guy.
I’ve run into so many handsome male players today… am I lucky?
However, the thief who was avoiding eye contact earlier suddenly stiffened up upon seeing the handsome adventurer.
“I didn’t steal anything; you’re slandering me! I—uh!”
A critical hit, and this time it’s accurate.
Forgot to mention, my left hand can also use the chain.
Hitting the thief’s forehead triggered a stun effect. He fell to the ground, eyes rolled back. I found out he’s also an adventurer as I approached.
Guards sensing the disturbance began to maintain order, pushing through the crowd. One of them approached me.
“What happened here?”
“He’s a thief.”
The game world has its benefits. In reality, thieves often deny their crimes, but in the game world, every item has a “record.” Stolen items are tagged as [Stolen Goods] for a certain duration, allowing for the original owner or guards to recover them. I showed the guard the record proving the 233 Denarius was stolen by the adventurer but now had returned to me.
“Good, we caught both the thief and the goods.”
The guard nodded, indicating I could leave without giving a statement.
In the game, it’s permissible to attack thieves. Even if I knocked the thief out cold, the guards wouldn’t make a big deal out of it.
The onlookers quickly dispersed, disappointed by the unsweet “drama.” Only the handsome male adventurer stood there in disbelief, as if he couldn’t believe his role in this had ended.
“Thank you for your help.”
“Huh? Oh…”
[Congratulations, Affection +0]
After thanking him, I continued shopping for other items.
I need to speed up. News of my arrival in Hest will spread quickly among players. I have to buy what I need before they swarm Hest.
Crossing off wheat flour on my list, my next stop is the tailor’s shop.
The tailor’s shop is a general term for clothing stores, offering both men’s and women’s clothes. Some commoners buy fabric to weave at home, as they need hardy clothes for farm or manual labor, not the refined clothes from tailors.
I also decide to buy some fabric to make clothes for Lily. Her current clothes are unwearable, and I don’t have a smaller maid outfit. I’ll have to hand-make a set for her.
Although this saves me the awkwardness of going into a lingerie store, it means I’ll have to hand-stitch Lily’s underwear… Why does that feel even more embarrassing?
On second thought, my [Tailoring] level is at Max; nothing I can’t quickly finish.
“Excuse me.”
Entering the tailor’s shop, I find the shopkeeper to be an elderly man.
“Oh? Here for clothes? If it’s custom, my son’s away at a weaving competition; he won’t be back for a while.”
The old man stood up, pounding his waist rhythmically as he greeted me with a professional smile.
“A weaving competition?”
“You don’t know? It’s organized by Count Montefeltro, gathering the best tailors in the county. The winner receives exquisite fabric from the Count’s collection to make a bridal trousseau.”
“A bridal trousseau? Someone’s getting married?”
I instinctively thought of Cris, the only daughter of Count Montefeltro, but I hadn’t heard her mention anything.
The old man shook his head, surprised I didn’t know.
“It’s for the kingdom’s third princess.”
