Volume 1 Chapter 31
The inheritance law in the Kingdom of Mikael is the traditional male-preference primogeniture. As the name suggests, titles are inherited by male offspring first. Only if there are no male heirs will daughters be considered. However, when a woman does inherit, other male family members often try to trip her up, claiming they are the rightful heirs. Women rulers usually face many challenges.
The king of the Mikael Kingdom has five children: two sons and three daughters. Luckily, both princes are very capable and healthy. Consequently, the princesses’ value as royal family members lies solely in political marriages.
The age of adulthood for humans on the Limoria continent is 16, and the third princess, the youngest daughter of the king, just turned 16 this year.
So she’s going to have a political marriage right after her coming-of-age ceremony… Being royal is tough.
“Who is the third princess marrying?”
“A prince from the Kingdom of Garuda. You know about the war between Garuda and Midgard, right?”
“I have some recollection… I remember that Oberon VII, the Elf King of Midgard, declared war on Garuda.”
The geographical division of the Limoria continent is quite interesting. Apart from the undead, the three human kingdoms are each close to another species’ territory. Mikael is closest to the orc land of Arcadia, Azlar is closest to the merfolk’s Atlantis, and the last of the three, Garuda, borders the elf land of Midgard.
Elf King Oberon VII is not a mild ruler. Since his ascension, Midgard has almost always been at war: suppressing domestic rebellion, fighting the undead, invading Arcadia. He’s fought almost every battle you could imagine, and Midgard is still at war with Garuda.
The old man nodded and continued speaking.
“Yes… poor third princess. I heard that the Garuda prince is a good-for-nothing playboy. Garuda secured the Mikael knights for their campaign through this marriage. They’ve already been dispatched.”
Political marriages between royal families essentially mean alliances. Garuda aims to gain Mikael’s support against the elf invasion. Considering distance, a large-scale expedition isn’t practical, so Mikael decided to send only their knight corps to aid their ally.
“The date for the third princess’s wedding is set. By tradition, nobles of count rank and above have to provide gifts for her dowry. The merchants have an obligation to offer gifts as well. Count Montefeltro is earnestly preparing, but that Garuda prince is not worthy of our third princess.”
The old man sighed, genuinely feeling the third princess got a bad deal.
The third princess is the youngest daughter and the least likely to inherit the throne. From the moment of her birth, her role as a tool for royal alliances was predetermined. Yet she accepted her fate gracefully, maintaining the royal family’s dignity in all her public appearances.
But, being born into royalty means one can’t control one’s own destiny.
Soon, under the escort of Duke Galorin, she will marry into the Kingdom of Garuda.
However, this has nothing to do with me. Even in a virtual world, royal family members aren’t people you can easily meet. As a mere countryside maid, I have no chance of interacting with them.
“Oh, look at me, talking so much I forgot the matter at hand. My son won’t be back for a while, so would you like to…”
“I’m not here for custom-made clothes, just some fabric.”
“Fabric, alright, just a moment. I’m a bit slow, so please wait.”
“No problem.”
The store was full of clothes, but I didn’t find the safety shorts I was looking for. Maybe I should try making them myself? Or maybe extend my skirt…
As I was thinking, another customer entered the store.
Again, another handsome guy. But this one, let’s say, while high in [Charm], has a face that’s too pretty—like a young internet celebrity skilled in singing, dancing, rapping, and basketball. To put it gently, his looks make my breakfast want to breathe fresh air.
The number of handsome adventurers I’ve encountered today can’t just be a coincidence. I’m not stupid; I can easily figure out the reason.
Could they be… trying to gain my favor with men?
A chill runs down my spine.
I absolutely will not develop a crush on any handsome guy as a girl.
“Here it is, which fabric would you like…”
The old man returned to the counter with a few rolls of fabric. The adventurer approached, holding some Denarius.
“Sir, may I pay for…”
“Old man, have you been experiencing back pain recently?”
It’s rude to interrupt people, but I had to, to avoid owing anyone.
“People age, it’s normal to have some aches and pains…”
“I’m quite confident in my massage skills; they can relieve fatigue. If you don’t mind, please allow me to give you a massage.”
“Why would you…?”
“Let’s go, let’s go.”
I hurriedly took the old man to the back room, leaving the adventurer holding his money, looking disheveled.
