Volume 1 Chapter 14
No matter how I rack my brain, I never would have guessed that the weapon I’d summon would be chains. Chains are generally used for restraining, not fighting. Sure, they could cause damage if swung at someone, but would anyone actually use them as their primary weapon on a battlefield?
Please, give me something else—anything but chains! In a game with a medieval setting, I’m not expecting firearms like a cannon, but a sword, a bow, an axe, or even some legendary physical weapon would do. I’d even be happy as a low-level gunner with bad luck.
But no matter how many times I repeat the process, the chains remain unchanged. Looks like their form is fixed… Well, a change in form was just wishful thinking on my part.
“How do I use these chains?”
After calming down, I remember that this is ultimately a virtual game world.
Fantastical weapons aren’t unusual. I mean, staves don’t exist in the real world, right?
Using my Stealth skill, I get close to a group of deer. Due to the absence of a master, the level of my Stealth skill “Silent Steps” has declined. At full level, I could walk in armor without making a sound.
Is this chain for close combat or long-range? I can’t decide. Throwing it seems viable, but I’m not sure about its damage potential.
“The Eternal Pacificus” makes long-range attacks challenging. There’s no reticle due to its holographic nature. Early-game archers without skill assistance have a tough time, sometimes even injuring themselves with their bowstrings. Players have complained it’s too realistic.
Archery… “Aim”… Magic… “Magical Enhancement”…
“Aim” is a derivative skill of archery, useful for targeting in a crowd. “Magical Enhancement” is just to add extra damage if the base isn’t enough.
I lock onto the biggest deer using the “Aim” skill. This is my first time; if I don’t mess up by tangling the chains around myself, I’ll consider it a success.
My thoughts unintentionally drift to an image of the chains tightly binding a voluptuous figure…
Get out, impure thoughts!
I shake my head vigorously to dispel the bad ideas that had crept in.
But, but! Associating chains with restraints is just a natural thought process; I don’t have any indecent interests!
“Heave!”
I throw the chain towards the deer. The moment it leaves my hand, my heart skips a beat. Without a reticle, hitting the target, let alone dealing sufficient damage, is questionable.
However, it seems I underestimated myself.
The chain flies in a way that defies logic, piercing through the deer’s throat and lodging itself into an old locust tree meters behind it.
That was surprisingly accurate…
Dumbfounded, I look at the deer hanging from my chain. I pull the chain back, and it obediently returns to me as if it’s a part of my body, easy to control.
It’s actually pretty useful.
No, I can’t give in! I was complaining just minutes ago; how can I abandon my principles so quickly?
… I wanted to admonish myself, but it’s just too convenient.
I examine my weapon more closely. The material resembles obsidian, but I can’t identify what it’s actually made of. The chains seem to be of considerable length, extending from the sleeves of my maid outfit.
After successfully hunting the deer, I store the meat in my inventory and leave the forest. Today’s plan isn’t just to enjoy the wilderness.
Thanks to Anna’s Support Group’s reputation, there are no players around, saving me the trouble of using my Stealth skill.
The Mercenary Corps camp resembles a military base. I approach the main gate where a sleepy player leans against a pillar. Interestingly, he’s the same player who kept patting my head yesterday.
“Hello. May I…”
“Oh? Is there a task for Anna—Anna—Anna—Anna—Anna—?!”
He wakes up abruptly, and his reaction is so intense I worry he might have bitten his tongue.
“Anastasia. I’d be pleased to know your name.”
“I’m Shidou Kurumi’s husband…”
Shidou Kurumi?
“…A woman’s name?”
“No, no, listen Anna! It’s not what you think!”
