“Mercenary Corps,” alongside “Trading Guilds” and “Nobility,” are considered the three main player organizations in “The Eternal Pacificus.” While the game imposes severe penalties for killing, the Mercenary Corps are organizations that live by the blade, enjoying some degree of leniency in punishments. One example is the Assassins, a sub-branch of the Mercenary Corps. However, this doesn’t mean all players in the Mercenary Corps are keen on violence; there are also Mercenary Corps composed of female players.

In fact, the scope of the Mercenary Corps’ operations isn’t limited to just killing for money. Nobles sometimes commission them to eradicate local bandits or hire them during wars to tip the scales in their favor. Trading Guilds mainly employ them to guard trade routes, colloquially known among players as “escorting caravans.” Sometimes they are even hired to investigate suspicious incidents. Players joke about having to moonlight as detectives, but as long as an event appears dangerous, NPCs are likely to hire Mercenary Corps to resolve it. After all, players can respawn, but if NPCs die, they’re gone for good.

If a Mercenary Corps gains fame, secret missions that are… less than honorable may also be offered. For example, Trading Guilds might ask them to pose as bandits to sabotage rival trade routes.

Anna’s Support Group is a guild of the Mercenary Corps.

Before dawn, I use a teleportation spell to bypass patrolling guards and directly arrive outside the village of Rothschild. There are many new campsites outside the village, temporary accommodations for players.

Like the Trading Guilds having their bases in towns, the Mercenary Corps mainly set up outside in camps. Once you’re officially recognized as a Mercenary Corps, the leader and officers gain the privilege to establish a fortified camp, better defended than normal player camps.

Anna’s Support Group’s main camp is near Rothschild, probably because I reside there.

Activating my stealth skills, I bypass player camps to avoid disturbing them.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back home before dark.”

This is the first time I’ve left the village since arriving on the Limoria continent.

The area near Rothschild village is a forest. Even within the kingdom, not all land is covered by towns. In a medieval setting, most landscapes are natural.

The morning breeze is warm, gently rustling my beautiful long hair.

I adjust a few unruly strands. Having long hair is a novel experience for me, but thankfully it’s easier to manage in this game world. Otherwise, I might’ve cut it short for convenience.

“Let’s go in and take a look.”

I impulsively decide to venture into the forest. The game divides areas into Safe, Neutral, and Dangerous zones. Safe zones are typically managed by NPCs, where hostile actions will attract guards. Dangerous zones are the opposite, mostly filled with undead creatures. Everything else is Neutral.

The forest near Rothschild isn’t a restricted hunting zone owned by nobles or clergy. In the Middle Ages, uninhabited forests were considered the property of nobles, and their fauna were technically their assets. This means hunting is only allowed with noble permission, otherwise, it’s considered poaching.

“I can’t believe this world is simulated in a game…”

A leaf floats down. I catch it in my palm. It not only smells like nature but also has visible veins. The virtual technology of “The Eternal Pacificus” is truly top-notch.

I activate my scouting skill to expand the search range at the cost of precision. I quickly locate a creature resembling a wild deer through thermal sensing.

That’s the one.

I give up thinking when I discover that my inventory… contains no weapons.

“Why are there only chains?!”
