Chapter 21: Shocking Revelation!
CHAPTER 21
Shaded from the burning heat of the early afternoon sun by the long branches of trees that stood tall above them, Megumi was following behind the person who led the way as they strolled through the woods.
They had traveled through his shadows to arrive where, so he didn't know where they were nor where they were headed.
" I ask again Ren, where are we going?"
" Seriously! This is the eleventh time you've asked that very question since we got here. What is the dispute between you and patience exactly?" He asked, turning back at Megumi with a frown on his face.
Megumi instantly caught a glance of his face as he turned around and instead, decided to irritate him even further.
" So?" He asked, a sarcastic tone to his voice as he quickly turned away his face.
From a glance, Ren could already see his lips slowly curling up into a smirk, and he turned around, ignoring his childish acts. It had been like that since the start of their journey and he knew best to just ignore it.
A few meters further down their journey, he began hearing the sound of sirens coming from the distance. He quickly increased his pace, trying to reach the scene as fast as he could while Megumi followed behind.
It wasn't long before what seemed to be a traditional building came into a few. Tile roofing had become a common sight for him and he could tell how old the building was from a glance.
" Hey, can you increase your senses using dark energy?" Ren asked with a whisper, slowly turning his gaze towards him, " If you can, then I highly suggest you do it now."
Megumi didn't reply to his suggestion — he had already begun what he had suggested before they even began. Now about twenty meters away from the scene, Ren was on guard just in case any policeman happened to come their way.
But even with his level of control, the distance between him and his targets was very great and the fact that they were constantly moving wasn't helping either. Footsteps, rustles, and even their breaths were things that kept interfering with his attention.
Prompting a greater amount of control and concentration from him, it wasn't long before he was left gasping for breath.
" I'll do it. Just... slap me across the head if I don't happen to wake up after you call my name." He suggested, grabbing a hold of Megumi's hand.
He pulled him up from the ground and took a sit on the ground, crossing his legs and slowly closing his eyes. After a second, his shadow began to stretch forward, towards the point where the siren noises were coming from.
His eyes were twitching relentlessly, a mark of how much stress whatever it was he was doing could be for him. He wasn't the only one among the Boma clan with great talent and potential.
It wasn't long before he began panting just like Megumi, but he kept on. How this was part of the training had completely gone off the roof, and they both have simply been caught in the air of curiosity.
Suddenly, Ren widened his eyes, gripping his chest in a bid to catch his breath as he jerked forward from his trance.
" There are a few sorcerers with them, and it won't be long before they find out we're here. We should leave now, I'll explain everything once we get back." He warned, running back to where they had just come from.
Megumi was confused, staring into the distance for a moment before quickly following behind him. Given the circumstances, he expected him to have them hide in his shadow or something, but he decided to run away instead.
Even with their great physique, there were many past their age who could beat them in specific physical attributes, especially speed.
" My legs are short you know." He said as he tried to keep up with the boy ahead of him.
Ren quickly stopped after hearing his voice, leaning forward slightly and resting his palms on his knees as he began panting heavily. There was a slight smile present on his face, one which he was struggling to hide.
" Hey... wait up," Megumi said, collapsing straight to the ground as soon as he caught up.
For the five years of his reincarnation, it was the most exhausting he had ever felt in his life, and he needed a good amount of rest.
Ren proceeded to sit on the ground, patting him slightly on the head as he stared off into the distance.
" It's no time to rest, okay? We don't know when they might come after us if they find out we were there, so it's best you know that I'll surely leave you here if they do, beforehand."
' when you have that many cars parked upfront, I doubt that the worst they can do is take us to the station and tell our parents to come pick us up."
" And I hope you have a good reason for being more than a kilometer away from where your parents expected you to be. Do you even know your house line?" Asked Ren.
" Yeah, you have a pretty good point."
They both stayed there for about an hour — all through to the late afternoon before returning to the building where cops were still investigating. They had moved through Ren's shadow to get inside the building and it wasn't quite what they expected.
The crime scene was still left untouched, possibly not fully inspected with the building having multiple police tapes wrapped around it. The place was covered in a pool of violet blood — a color of blood he hadn't witnessed before.
" Halflings," Ren mumbled, looking around the place.
But amidst all that, Megumi was far too focused on the tracings left in the blood on the wooden floor. There were prints of humanoid shapes on the floor, obviously, the ones that created the pool of blood.
And after a while of pondering, he came to a conclusion.
" Hey, is it possible for demons and humans to procreate? I've heard rumors a couple of times but I think the blood over at the door is little blue."
" Haha, seems like you finally caught on." He replied with a slight chuckle, but the look of worry on his face was far immeasurable.
