Chapter 22: For Another Day.
CHAPTER 22
" I keep thinking high of him, but he keeps increasing my confidence of doubt — he makes the wrong decisions, takes nothing seriously, and looks forward to making fun during important matters, at least matters important to me... But somehow, he picks on the tiniest of details when it comes to things that should only instill his curiosity. He's usually never sure of it, but the number of times the coincidence has happened has left me questioning whether he is just faking the whole act of ignorance and lack of knowledge."
There were a lot of thoughts running through Ren's mind as he walked towards the wall and slowly leaned his back against it. Everything that happened was already clear to him, but he couldn't decide whether to tell the five-year-old with him or not.
" Hey." He called out, looking towards Megumi, " What led you to deduce that demons might have been having affairs with our kind? Shit, this sounds disgusting I just can't even muster enough spirit to say it a second time."
" Disgusting to you that is. It was humanity's stupidity in the name of curiosity that led to all this. Thousands of children and men were killed due to this very reason — it's happened before, so what's so surprising about coming to learn a few of them survived?"
Hearing what Megumi had to say, he simply shut his mouth and continued to look around the place. Walking from room to room but found nothing important.
He arrived at their central meeting area once more to see Megumi walking back in with a can in his right hand. He shook it slightly, indicating that it had some liquid content.
" Hey Ren, you need to see this." He called to him, quickly approaching.
Apparently, the drink he had was an energy drink — they could both tell from the taste and color since the skin of the can was strangely burnt off.
" I think we should go — let's leave here... now." He said, tossing aside the canned drink with an intent stare on Megumi, " With the way this is going I doubt that it'll be long before we get caught."
With that he quickly walked away from the scene, leaving Megumi behind to do whatever it was he wanted in the building. For some reason, he began feeling uneasy and couldn't shake off the gut feeling he had.
It was best he left as soon as possible in order to avoid any troubles.
Megumi came out a few minutes later and they both returned to the location of the beach house where they had come from.
Whatever Ren meant by training was what the latter was still yet to know, but the truth behind the violet blood they came in contact with was what he wanted to know more than anything else. If someone or some demon had done it, then what would be their reason?
Once again he hit the house library, skimming through whatever books he could find in search of an answer. The history of Demons could come in many literary forms, and it was up to him to piece together the loose ends.
" Damnit! If I don't get the story from a reliable source then I might be left with false information at the end of the day." He thought, slamming the last book he held hard on the table, " If only Josh was here, or I had just read the damn book like he asked me to."
After reading through most of the history he could find, and getting little to no valuable information, he decided to hit the internet. A simple search of blue blood was all it took for a buck load of information to appear, but whether it was credible was up to him to find out.
There was a website he found — one where people were posting some of the weirdest things they had come to know about demons. Some of them were obviously baseless rumors, but there were some who had actually posted pictures and videos of what they witnessed.
" Samurai spritz; that's the name of the energy drink I saw one of the human-like demons drinking. There were about twelve cans present around it. Why would anyone take that much energy drink, samurai of all of them, and still act as hazy as he did."
After the comment, the anonymous proceeded to post a picture of the person he saw, or rather the people he had come to know as hybrid demons.
" Too bad I didn't get to see the faces of the people who got killed." He thought, slowly scrolling further down. He stopped
There it was — a picture of the very same building he was in with Ren about a minute ago. It seemed a bit older than what he had come to see, but he already knew why.
There had been a delay in the renovation and the family hadn't been informed on time before returning.
" That doesn't make any sense. If I were to suddenly turn into a halfling, then I would probably seek for those the same as me and try going into hiding... The people knew very well what humans would do once they found out. Paranoia would be very common, and seeing through things such as this would have been quite easy." He thought, scrolling through his phone once more.
At that point, he was lost in thought and confused at the same time. This could have been a setup, perhaps a test for humans.
" Were the bodies even found?"
He bit down on his thumb, looking around the place in search of answers but nothing could come to his mind. The only hint he had once was that there had been a murder and everything else were baseless speculations.
He decided to give up on the case for the time being, seeing how reluctant Ren was. He highly doubted the boy would be willing to provide him with any good suggestions regarding the case either.
*********
Late in the evening, Ren decided to go back to the suspected crime area he and Megumi had come across earlier. He was standing a few meters away from the building, his eyes staring blankly into the distance.
He heaved a sigh, his gaze turning the palms of his hands as he slowly began to step forward toward the building. There was an intent glare in his eyes, one of subtle rage.
His heart continued to pound heavily as he continued onward, and as he reached the building, he held out his hand, adverting his gaze as a frown slowly appeared on his face.
" Those bastards couldn't keep their curiosity in check could they? I don't know what he's trying to do here, but I sure can't allow it."
There, in thought, he continued to watch as a bright flame lit up within the building, revealing the shadow of a clawed beast as it ripped through the flesh of its victims.
With his shadow, he subdued their screams, and in less than a minute, not one of the few cops within the building was left alive.
A slight chuckle escaped his lips as he descended into his shadow once more.
