Chapter 97 – Holding The Gap
If Damion had been paying attention to the time, he would have realized that in less than 24 hours the Magic System would be fully unlocked, but right now his focus was on protecting the city and staying alive. If his focus waivered for a moment he would realize how exhausted he was and quite likely collapse.
Unbeknownst to Damion, Ms. Teft and the other A Rank mages of the city were outside the walls, striking down anything over C Rank. The typical defender of the walls were C and D rank knights with a few B Rank knights and mages coordinating the defensive efforts.
Damion wondered a few times why no one had volunteered or been ordered to help him defend the gap, but he could not afford to spare much time to think on it. The truth was that Justiciar Mathis saw how well Damion was doing and ordered his defenders to other locations. Other places along his section of the wall that were not doing as well. Justiciar Mathis kept ranged knights and a few mages on the wall sections by the gap, but only to keep too many Demonic Beasts from charging in at Damion.
Justiciar Mathis watched Damion fight and could not help but feel that the boy was a force of nature. Impossible for the Demonic Beasts to overcome and quite quickly earning a reputation, not just among the people of Saung, but also with the high-ranking mages that had come to join the defense as well as other B, C and D Rank knights and mages from other cities that had taken up the call to defend Saung as well.
As Damion continued to cut down Demonic Beasts intent on charging into the city he realized that he was no longer just facing Wind Wolves and Stone Bears. This new wave of Demonic Beasts were goblins.
The greenish grey skinned Demonic Beasts leapt at him from impossible distances and at first appeared that many of them were going to make it past him. That was until the ranged knights on the walls knocked them out of the air with arrows. The goblins' uncanny ability to dodge attacks only worked when they were focused on the one they were attacking, and these goblins had been focused on Damion. This allowed the ranged knights to take them down easily.
Without the worry that the goblins were going to just jump over his head and get into the city, Damion refocused on the battle. Most of the goblins were armed with short daggers and knives, but Damion noticed a few with long swords and a couple that were hanging back with staves.
Three goblins advanced on Damion, each with a sword in hand and a crude spike shield strapped to their other arm. Two goblins leapt at Damion, their swords stretched in front of them to impale him. Damion blocked one of the swords with his own and the other he knocked to the side with the back of his gauntlet.
Both of the goblins that leapt towards him passed by Damion and were struck down by arrows when they turned to attack Damion from behind. The third goblin charged forward and Damion was forced to parry his blow. This goblin was slightly bigger than the rest and Damion was not sure what that meant, other than that it had more strength. As Damion traded blows with the goblin, Damion quickly began to suspect that this goblin was a C Rank Demonic Beast.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
While Damion continued to fight evenly with this goblin, more began to creep closer, each waiting for the chance to strike. Damion knew he could not afford to prolong this fight, but he also was not sure how to end it quickly.
The only reason Damion had even been able to fight through the entire day before, through the night and well into this day, was because of Mana Absorption. He was pulling in mana to keep his spells going and as he was pulling mana in, it was also refreshing his body to stave off exhaustion. However, that effect would not last forever and very soon Damion would collapse, even with Mana Absorption running.
'Mana Absorption,' Damion realized, was the answer to his problem.
With a flourish of his sword, Damion knocked the goblin's blade and arm above its head. Before the goblin could bring its blade back in line, Damion took a step closer and grabbed the goblin's wrist. Mana Absorption immediately went to work. The goblin quickly lost mana and with it, its stamina, all of which flowed into Damion. With the goblin weakened and himself refreshed, Damion quickly brought his blade in, stabbing the goblin through the gut.
The entire exchange only took a few seconds and Damion doubted anyone would notice the goblin's strange sudden weakness.
When the goblin's champion fell, the goblin mages started slinging spells Damion's way. Apparently, the goblins felt it was better to kill this foe with magic instead of sending in another batch of warriors.
Damion answered with a fire pillar, sweeping it across the goblin formation. Most of the goblins scattered, but a few were caught in the fire. What Damion achieved though, was that the goblins were forced to stop sending spells at him and also to stop paying attention to the mages and ranged knights on the walls in order to dodge Damion's fire pillar. With their focus diverted the ranged knights and mages cut down the goblin mages and decimated the ranks of goblin warriors. The few remaining goblins turned and leapt out towards the open fields. A few were cut down by ranged knights, but several dozen managed to get away.
"You! Move out of the gap now," someone shouted at Damion. Damion was too tired to argue, so he jumped off the rubble of the wall and into the city. Deactivating Mana Absorption just in case someone gave him a congratulatory pat on the back.
As soon as Damion was clear of the gap in the wall, a group of mages channeled their magic, and the wall began to reconstruct itself. Damion could tell the wall was not as strong as before and the mages could not rebuild the magic cannons that were destroyed by the Arcdotus, but the wall would be strong enough to keep everything below B Rank from breaking through. A temporary patch, but effective.
"My word boy, what possessed you to try and hold the gap against such a horde and for hours," the same voice said to Damion. Damion turned to see a gruff looking man with hair the color of granite, somehow it even sparkled it places. Damion rested against a wall and was mesmerized by the man's hair. Before Damion could figure out how to answer the mage someone else spoke up.
"The boy jumped in right after the breach happened," Justiciar Mathis said, jolting Damion out of his stupor. "He was doing so well that it allowed me to move my forces and cover some of the other breaches better, which also let your team of Stone mages fix them faster. Got a problem with my tactics Mage Mason?"
"Of course not, Justiciar Moretti," the mage answered. "I was just flustered by the boy's performance is all. There are not many people capable of doing what he just did. I wonder who his teacher is?"
Mage Mason turned to Damion expecting an answer, but Damion had already fallen asleep leaning against the wall. Justiciar Mathis picked the young man up and carried him over to one of the field hospitals that had been set up for the wounded and laid him down on a cot.
