Reborn With a Magic System

Chapter 96 – S Rank Beasts

The magic cannons were depressed as low as they could go. All of the Demonic Beasts that made it past the barrage would have to be dealt with by the defenders on the walls. From the first wave of Demonic Beasts, not many made it through and those that did were quickly killed by ranged knights on the walls.

Damion watched on in silence. None of the Demonic Beasts had entered his range, or even managed to come close to the east gate at all. The second wave came and was once again annihilated by the combined firepower of the magic cannons and the ranged knights. When the third wave passed through the kill zone of the magic cannons Damion noticed that more of the Demonic Beasts had made it through and were approaching the walls.

The ranged knights were still able to finish off the remaining Demonic Beasts of the third wave without a problem, but they had made it noticeably closer to the wall. When the fourth wave passed through the kill zone, Damion noticed that many of the Demonic Beasts, despite having been hit by the magic cannons, made it through.

Damion did not recognize any of these Demonic Beasts, but that did not trouble Damion. What troubled him, were the flying Demonic Beasts. The ranged knights started attacking the flying Demonic Beasts, but they were not having much luck. When the flying Demonic Beasts came closer several of the mages on the walls sent their spells towards the Demonic Beasts. One of the Demonic Beasts fell from the sky, but the rest closed in.

After channeling mana into his sword Damion sent a pillar of fire into the sky. The flying Demonic Beasts scattered when Damion's attack flashed through the air. Damion altered the angle of his attack and managed to catch one. The flying beast had its feathers burned off and it tumbled out of the sky, hitting the ground hard.

Just as Damion was targeting another of the flying Demonic Beasts a roar rang out. Damion felt as if his spine was shaking, the sound of the roar was infused with magic and it was suffocating to Damion.

In the distance Damion saw a large Demonic Beast that, if it was not moving, could easily have been mistaken for a mountain. An Arcdotus. Damion recognized the enormous bear Demonic Beast immediately. This was an S Rank Demonic Beast with Ice and Sound magic affinity, and it was not alone.

Beyond the first Arcdotus that Damion spotted were two more. Three S Rank Demonic Beasts. One was enough to breach the walls of Saung. Three. Three was enough to flatten the city.

The magic cannons turned, each targeting the closest Arcdotus. Once all the magic cannons came to bear they fired at once peppering the Demonic Beast. The Arcdotus let out another roar which sent Damion to his knees, blood running out of his ears.

The magic power in the roar squeezed Damion's heart, along with the hearts of most of the other defenders on the wall. More than half the defenders were on their knees, clutching their chests.

"Fear not valiant defenders," a melodious voice rang across the battlefield. When Damion heard the voice he felt the grip on his heart slacken.

Stolen novel; please report.

Looking up, Damion saw a woman standing in the air with a staff held above her head in one hand. Damion did not need anyone to tell him, this woman was an S Rank mage. She had a long braid of pure white hair that ran down to the small of her back and pure white skin peeking out from her long amber robes.

The Arcdotus was not happy seeing its roar attack being negated. The Demonic Beast opened its mouth again, but instead of a roar, it sent out a beam of ice towards the city wall. The ice beam struck the wall, dropping the temperature in the area by several degrees. Where the ice beam struck the wall the defenders there were flash frozen with looks of shock of torment on their faces.

As Damion was registering the attack hitting the wall a few dozen meters from him the Arcdotus charged towards Saung. The Demonic Beast completely ignored the attacks from knights and mages. The magic cannons could still hit the Arcdotus since it was so large, but even the blasts from the magic cannons were shrugged off.

The Arcdotus tore through the farms along the wall and then slammed into the frozen section of the wall. Even through Damion was dozens of meters away from the point of impact, he was knocked into the air. When Damion came down he tumbled off the wall, landing outside the city. Damion hit the ground hard, but after the years of training from Ms. Teft, Damion was able to get to his feet and shake off the pain from the fall.

The Demonic Beasts on the ground quickly swarmed towards the gap in the wall, ignoring Damion entirely. Damion could not allow these Demonic Beasts into the city. Most of the people of Saung should be safely inside the shelters by now, but there were always stragglers and stubborn people.

With a leap, Damion flew over the heads of the various Demonic Beasts and landed on the rubble in the gap of the wall. The S Rank Demonic Beast was already inside the city, with two more still in the distance, but Damion could not worry with threats so far out of his weight class, right now Damion had to focus on the Demonic Beasts in front of him.

Wind Wolves, Stone Bears and Rock Crabs surged forward. These Demonic Beasts were strong, but thankfully, not at C Rank. Each slash of Damion's flaming sword cut through flesh and sent a Demonic Beast stumbling down the rubble of the wall.

From atop the wall there were still defenders raining arrows and spells down on the Demonic Beasts charging towards the gap. One by one Damion cut down the Demonic Beasts that made it to the gap. As Damion continued to fight he fell into a rhythm. A slash of a sword would kill any of the Demonic Beasts that came too close and when they stayed out of range Damion would send out a fire slash or when there were too many a fire pillar to cull their numbers.

The knights and mages defending the wall watched in awe as Damion held the gap. None of them knew who this young knight with the flaming sword was, but they were all impressed by his performance.

Inside the city the S Rank Arcdotus was being contained by several S Rank mages. Though contained was a bit of an optimistic way of looking at it. Three S Rank mages were preventing the Arcdotus from wreaking havoc over the city and were even slowly wearing the Demonic Beast down. But they were not close to defeating it.

The two Arcdotus still outside the city were the focus of the magic cannons on the wall and several S Rank mages that were keeping them from charging into the city as well.

Damion of course knew none of this. The world he currently existed in contained him, his sword and an area of about 50 meters around him. With the magic cannons focused on the S Rank Demonic Beasts there was nothing cutting down the waves of Demonic Beasts heading towards the city and the gap in the wall that Damion was defending.

All Damion could do was focus on the fight in front of him. He paid no attention to the setting sun, or night or even dawn when it arrived. The defenders on the walls all had to drink potions and receive healing, but Damion stood alone in the gap without a rest creating a legend for himself.
