Chapter 98 – Back To The Fight
"Are you going to tell me?" Mage Mason asked Justiciar Mathis.
"What? You want to snatch him away from his teacher?" Justiciar Mathis asked the man with an amused smile.
Mage Mason realized something was going on, some hidden meaning in Justiciar's Mathis' words, but he was not sure what. The young man was a talent. A force of nature with a sword and Mage Mason could feel the magic radiating off of him, it was clear the boy was trained as a knight, but the young man was meant to be a mage, he just knew it.
"If I have to. The boy is clearly a mage, but he is trained as a knight. I want to know who would do such an injustice to a rare talent."
"It isn't my place to say," Justiciar Mathis responded. He had already confirmed with Ms. Teft, that he was not to reveal Damion's information to anyone. "Let the boy rest for now. There are still two S Rank Demonic Beasts out there and hundreds of other Demonic Beasts still attacking the city. Go make sure your patches are holding."
Mage Mason eyed Justiciar Mathis but did not say anything back. Elliot Mason was an A Rank Stone mage and very much unaccustomed to taking orders from a B Rank knight. But Justiciar Mathis was in charge of this sector of the city defenses. Anyone coming into his area answered to him, even S Ranks. On top of that he was also a Justiciar and a high ranking one. The political power he commanded was also substantial and it was not worth antagonizing the knight.
Damion slept soundly for the rest of the day and through the night. Many of the defenders on the wall that had to come off to rest or be healed saw Damion sleeping there and recalled his astonishing feat of holding the gap and could not believe how young he looked while laying on the cot in the makeshift hospital.
Some people coming into the hospital, mostly mages from further down the wall that had only heard rumors of a skilled knight holding a gap in the wall, saw Damion and looked down on him with contempt. Since Damion did not have a scratch on him and he looked like a young man in his prime sleeping while everyone else risked their lives.
A few of the mages, who had received serious injuries defending their sections of the wall, even went so far as to try and wake Damion and throw him out of the makeshift hospital. The healers put a stop to that quickly and even threatened not to heal the troublemakers if they did not promise to behave.
Damion woke up in the early morning hours and the Magic System flashed more than a dozen notifications to him from his battles. Damion had managed to complete the E Rank quest to kill Ferocious Beasts and Demonic Beasts, as well as the D Rank quest. Finishing off these two quests netted Damion 900 experience points and 24 Store Credits.
What really surprised Damion were the notifications of Damion finishing four stages of the kill C Rank Ferocious Beasts or Demonic Beasts. Each stage of this quest rewarded Damion with 100 experience points and 5 Store Credits. Just these four completions almost matched the Store Credits given by the other 9 quests he had completed.

Once Damion had finished looking through the notifications, he sat up on his cot and looked around where he was. A number of the cots were filled by people missing arms and legs, even some who were badly burned. This was not a place Damion wanted to stick around, so he quickly got up and went in search of Justiciar Mathis.
While he searched, Damion pulled a ration pack from one of his storage pouches on his belt and began eating. He had not eaten anything in over a day. Thankfully he had worn his backpack canteen and had been able to take occasional sips of water, so he was not dehydrated, but he was still quite hungry.
By the time Damion found Justiciar Mathis he was finishing off his third ration pack but was eager to get back into the fight. The countdown on the Magic System was down to just over 3 hours and Damion needed something to occupy his mind while the seconds ticked by.
"Finally awake," Justiciar Mathis said to Damion when he saw him approaching.
"I take one little nap in two days and suddenly everyone loses their minds," Damion joked.
"You made quite the spectacle of yourself out there. I think almost every mage above B Rank that is a part of this defense has sent me an inquiry about you. Luckily, I can ignore them for the time being. But you are going to get swarmed when this fight is over. Are you ready for that?"
"I don't suppose I have much choice now do I?"
"Not unless you leave now, but you'll have to try and get out the west gate. Too many fights going on from the north down the east side of the city all the way down to the south gate. I wouldn't recommend it though."
"Why is that?" Damion asked.
"If someone sees you, which they will, they'll mark you down as a deserter. You'll lose your adventurer license, forfeit all the money on your payment card and basically become an exile."
"Yeah, I guess I'll pass. Where do you need me?"
"Head up to the position you held above the gate. The fighting is slowing down and in an hour or so I suspect command will order most of our forces off the walls to hunt down all the Demonic Beasts that have managed to scurry away."
"Why not go now?"
"The S Ranks are still fighting the last of the S Rank Demonic Beasts."
"Do beast waves usually have three S Rank Demonic Beasts?"
"Three? I've never been in a beast wave that even had one. Usually, it's some B maybe a few A Ranks. But so far we've counted, aside from the three S Ranks, 40 A Rank Demonic Beasts 167 B Rank Demonic Beasts and they stopped counting at a thousand for the C Rank."
"Sounds like this is quite the fight of the century. Is every S Rank in the world here?"
"I don't know about that, but when the S Rank Demonic Beasts were spotted a general call went out. Unless they were occupied somewhere else or too far from a teleportation platform, the S Rank Mages all came."
"And now they all want to know my name," Damion mused.
"Not just your name, but who taught you and why a mage with such high potential was trained as a knight."
"I'm sure Ms. Teft will have answers for them," Damion said with a wave as he hurried towards the wall to resume his post.
No one should know he was a mage, at least not yet. It was possible that with the little time remaining and his excessive use of the fire attack glyph on his sword made watchers thought he was a mage, but he would have thought the Magic System would have blocked everyone's senses just like in the past.
