Chapter 198: Ch 198: Did you find it? - Part 1
Layla's words suddenly caused the guards to shuffle around on their feet. They debated whether they should ask her to show them her magic and confirm her claims or if they should believe her and not cause her any more trouble.
In the end, the investigation team leader decided to take this risk and ask Layla if they could see the room she had set up with the magic.
Layla had nothing to hide, so she agreed easily.
They all approached the door, and tension rose around the party. They looked nervous about approaching the door when one exhaled loudly and decided to take the leap of faith and push it open.
The inside of the room looked flawless, and the man almost walked inside without checking. But Layla was faster than his eyes could see, and she pulled the man back before he could step inside the room.
"Please, don't do anything foolish and get yourself killed. This room might look ordinary, but it had a teleportation spell set on it. You won't know where you end up going if you step in there now."
Layla warned, and the man quickly took a step back in fear. He looked suspiciously at the screen in front of him before he decided that it would be best to ignore it.
It was a wise choice, and everyone else made the same mistake.
They took a quick look around but found nothing else.
"Well, everything seems to check out and be clear. We found nothing here, so we should head back now. We will report that there was nothing here."
The guard leader told Layla before he left. His voice was much more polite this time than before when he demanded Layal show him around.
It was all because Layla had shown that she was not someone whom they could mess with. She had more powerful magic than these guards could ever imagine.
She just smoked as she watched these officers run with their tails between their legs. There was no need for Layla to do anything anymore.
The innkeeper kept her nervousness at bay while this happened, but she showed her true colors as soon as these people were gone.
"M-Miss, what if these people return with a vengeance and try to harm us? Should we hire more security? And this time, one that could help us out?"
The innkeeper asked in a scared voice, and Layla almost laughed when she heard that voice.
"Security? We already have the best security imaginable in the world. Don't worry; we won't need any more security to defend ourselves. And also, my trusted people must be heading this way and reach us soon.
We could take over this town if we want to once they are here."
Layla's lack of worry made the innkeeper feel worried. She wanted to shake the younger female and demand that she take things seriously.
But since Layla was so laid-back, the innkeeper felt bad for worrying, and she sighed in regret at getting stuck with someone like Layla as her master.
'Me and my greed got me into this mess. I will make sure not to obsess over money in the future.'
It was a small thought that occurred in the innkeeper's mind, but she could not keep her oath for two days before someone bribed her to look away as they snuck into her inn and tried to rob Layla.
Their end was the same as the previous one had been.
...
"Leader John, what should we do? This is the third time this week that we have seen a body with a cross appear on the outskirts of the village. Everyone is getting restless about this. What do we tell them?"
The leader looked at this subordinate with a stern look in his eyes.
"Calm down! This is all a hoax, a fluke if you will. Most people think the tyrant left the village because he got bored, but only those who had been here at that time knew what happened. We will not need to worry about that tyrant in this life."
The leader assured his subordinate with an air of calmness and laziness around him. He puffed out the smoke from his cigar before looking at his subordinate again.
"A-Are you sure about it, boss? What if you are mistaken about all this, and that tyrant returns? Will we be able to fend him off?"
The subordinate asked in a scared voice, and the leader frowned.
"Ronaldo Smith was a powerful demon that ruled these parts with an iron fist. But that demon was killed off in the middle of this city by an even bigger demon with pink hair and wielded axes as weapons.
So, if you ask me if I expect to see that tyrant again, I would have to say no. People do not come back from being dead that easily. And even if they are revived, no one has their previous power anymore."
The leader was sure about this. He had seen Ronaldo Smith's body fall with his own eyes and checked up on that body with his own hands.
As such, he would be the first not to tell everyone that the tyrant was not back, and this was an imposter trying to scare them all into thinking that the tyrant was back.
"On that note, did you investigate the inn that caused all these incidents? All these people tried to sneak into that inn to kill the person who rented it, right? Did you get any news on how she is?"
The leader asked as he placed his papers down and picked up a new batch to work on.
He would have liked to investigate this case himself, but he was too buried in paperwork to get up and move an inch.
When he heard that order, the subordinate flinched, but he brought out his report to tell his leader what he knew about Layla.
He had tried to find out as much as he could, but there had not been much to discover.
