Reborn as the Villain in a Romance Fantasy

Chapter 197: Ch 197: The story - Part 2

The innkeeper spoke in a mysterious voice to entice Layla into hearing her out. The female's smile was almost teasing when she asked Layla if she wanted to hear what she had to say.

But Layla only gave the female a blank look before deciding she did not want to hear the innkeeper out.

"There is no need to tell me. Knowing what happened here in the past won't help me much since I am not going to stay here for long. Instead, you should tell me what you made for breakfast. I want to eat something nice and refreshing."

Layla's words surprised the innkeeper.

Anyone else in her situation would have asked for the story and even paid extra to hear it.

But Layla looked, not bothered to know what happened. This made the innkeeper excited, and she wanted to break Layla's unserious look.

That is why she decided to tell Layla what happened without the female asking her any questions.

"Miss, there used to be a tyrant in this town that used to rule over it. Before any semblance of control had been established, this town was just an uncontrolled place.

That man, no, that killer, rules this place with an iron fist, and anyone who challenged him was killed off with a cross-shaped scar on their chest, much like these people are. Now, you would think that someone defeated the man, which is why he left, but that is untrue.

That man was too powerful to have stayed in this place and enjoyed himself, so he decided to leave and find another challenge a few years ago, and then this new order was established."

The innkeeper finished in a low voice, likely trying to scare Layla and have her ask for more. But people like the innkeeper were easy to deal with.

As long as Layla was uninterested in what she had to say, the innkeeper would want to say more.

And just as Layla expected, the innkeeper could not hold her voice in for much longer before she spoke again.

"Ugh, Miss, are you not curious about what happened and where that person went after he left? It is said that he wandered around for a while before he settled wherever he pleased, and now, it seems that he is coming back.

As for that man's name. It's said that his name is Ronaldo Smith…. miss, are you alright? You almost choked. Did that news shock you that much?"

The innkeeper asked, but Layla did not have the face to tell her why she choked.

There had been no reason for Layla to have choked, but the food she had been eating suddenly decided to go down the wrong pipe, and she had such a reaction.

Because of her long sleep, her body was not 100% online for now, and Layla was still learning how to operate it.

"I am fine. Just get me some water, and I will be fine."

Layla spoke confidently, but she could tell that a misunderstanding had occurred. She had no intention of clearing it up this time, so she allowed the female in front of her to misunderstand her actions.

It did not matter if her actions were taken as a fluke or something more. Layla won't be in this town after a few days anyway.

That should be more than enough time for her to be able to get out of any trouble that could be caused.

...

*Knock*

Layla was having a nice afternoon, drinking tea and reading a book, when her room door was knocked.

She had not ordered service, so she was a little spectacled when opening the door. She almost did not open the door before deciding it would be too humiliating for the person on the other side to be ignored like this.

"I do not want to deal with anyone today, so please head back-"

Layla finally opened the door but did not see the innkeeper or any other people she expected.

Instead, the person in front of her was wearing the official uniform of the local police, and he also had a magical warrant in his hands.

"Miss, I am afraid that you will have to cooperate with us about that murder case that has been discovered this morning.

According to the witnesses, they saw those people enter this inn last night before they were killed off. Do you know anything about this?"

The police officer asked tensely as he forcefully tried to come inside Layla's room and check it.

That was something Layla could not allow. Especially when she could feel Luna shaking on top of her shoulder. The dragon was ready to make some human Kebabs if she felt any more offended than she already was.

So, before that could happen, Layla distracted these officers with her gestures.

She blocked the door before anyone could enter and made a thinking pose so that three officers would have something else to focus on rather than the room behind her.

"Now that you say it, I remember some noises last night but did not pay attention to them. I am a magician and reserved this inn because I needed a place to practice.

I intended to remove all spells from this place when I planned to leave in a week. But I am afraid that someone who came here with the intention of robbing me would have gotten caught up in that spell."

Layla told the officers this much since she knew she wouldn't get in trouble.

It was a logical thing most magicians did, and the law permitted it.

She watched as the revelation of her being a magician changed how the officers looked at her.

Now that they knew she had magic and power on her side, they no longer approached her like she was someone they could crush. Instead, they had a suspicious but varied look in their eyes when they dealt with Layla.

Power was everything here, and Layla would be respected as a magician regardless of what she could accomplish.
