Chapter 229: Chapter 229: Success
Hernan-Reyes had been keeping a close watch from a distance on the police cars chasing Dominic's heavy truck. Seeing several police cars marked with official insignias causing havoc among the pursuing police vehicles, Hernan quickly realized these were Dominic's accomplices. Comparing Dominic's allies to his own subordinates and the police under his command was infuriating.
Hernan decided he could no longer let Dominic run around with his money-filled safe. He had a bad feeling about the situation. From Hobbs teaming up with Dominic and using his armored vehicle to break into the police station, to the current state of affairs, it was clear that Dominic's crew had meticulously planned everything. Relying on the police to stop Dominic seemed increasingly unrealistic. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
He ordered Mario, "Speed up, overtake those clueless police cars. We'll handle it ourselves!"
Mario hesitated, feeling uneasy. He wanted to persuade his boss against personally confronting Dominic, considering his advanced age and the inherent risks. He felt it was his duty to protect Hernan.
But before Mario could voice his concerns, Hernan, sensing his thoughts, dismissed them with a single explanation: "That truck carries all my black market liquid assets. If we don't get it back, our business will suffer greatly!"
Mario, knowing his boss's personality well, kept silent. Hernan was right. A significant portion of that money was essential for maintaining the stability of their underground operations. Though the amount might not be substantial compared to Hernan's total wealth, it was critical because it was cash. Many underground deals only recognized cash. You couldn't exactly pay Colombian drug dealers with checks or credit cards. Moreover, the untraceable money was also used to pay off subordinates and police in Rio. If Dominic's crew stole that cash, Hernan wouldn't go bankrupt, but it would cause significant harm.
Mario signaled another car to lead the way over the radio. Two matte black Volkswagen Touaregs, equipped with six-barrel Gatling guns and manned by four of Hernan's henchmen, sped up to overtake the obstructing Rio police cars and try to stop Dominic.
Thanks to Brian and his crew's relentless efforts, the police convoy chasing Dominic finally slowed down due to the chaos created among the police cars. This gave Dominic the precious seconds he needed to temporarily vanish from his pursuers' sight, a critical part of their plan to switch the cargo.
Early that morning, Giselle had parked a heavy truck identical to Dominic's in a tunnel's emergency lane. It even had a safe identical to the one stolen from the police station. Waiting with her was one of the two bomb experts from the Dominican Republic, the other was waiting on the cross-sea bridge to help Dominic escape after tipping the truck over.
Thanks to Brian and his team, when Dominic drove into the tunnel, the nearest police car was at least 500 meters away. With multiple police cars involved in accidents, Dominic had ample time to switch vehicles with Giselle. Dominic then drove away with an empty safe, continuing to draw the attention of the police and Hernan, while Giselle and the bomb expert handled their loot.
Giselle and Dominic quickly swapped vehicles as planned. Dominic sped away in the truck with the empty safe, while the bomb expert covered the back of the truck with a large tarpaulin. Giselle swiftly removed the iron-gray film covering the truck's front, a tactic Vanessa had used during a heist in Manhattan. This tricked not just the police but also an enraged Hernan-Reyes into thinking Dominic still had the money.
Hernan had no idea that the chances of recovering his safe were now almost zero. Seeing Brian's group cause massive losses and chaos among the Rio police, with many police cars wrecked, the crime lord was losing his mind. He furiously urged Mario to bypass the wreckage and catch up with Dominic to prevent his escape.
Giselle and the bomb expert worked quickly, covering the truck's rear and removing the front film, changing the truck's appearance significantly. They then pulled down a camouflage cloth matching the tunnel walls, concealing the truck from passing vehicles. The design of the emergency lane in the tunnel, which protruded outward, helped hide the truck without obstructing traffic.
Just as they finished, the first police car pursuing Dominic sped past, followed by more police vehicles and Hernan's Touaregs. Their focus was entirely on Dominic ahead, unaware that the money-filled safe had just slipped by them.
Only after the last of the pursuers had passed did Giselle and the bomb expert calmly remove the camouflage, start the truck, and head to a deserted factory in the suburbs where Mia was waiting.
Castle's modified drone, capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, captured the entire operation. The skilled gamer and hacker, who had been piloting the drone, felt immense satisfaction as they watched the flawless execution of the plan.
The young hacker turned to Castle in awe, "Uncle Rick, did they really just steal the money like that? Dominic said a third of it is mine, right?"
Castle smiled, "Three or four million dollars, kid. But have some ambition. There's more where that came from."
