Pokemon: The Master Of Monsters

Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Problems at the Saffron Gym

Najun frowned as the weight of Gary's words settled in.

"If news of the apprentices leaving spreads, the Pokémon Alliance will definitely send someone to investigate. If that happens, the Saffron Gym will be in serious trouble, and Sabrina herself might even be arrested," Najun thought to himself, his mind racing. He had spent years running the gym, but this wasn't something he could easily solve.

"Who are you?" Najun asked, his voice suddenly more suspicious. He was no fool, and something about Gary's interest in this matter didn't sit right with him. Why would a young Trainer be so concerned with the problems of Saffron Gym?

"My name is Gary, from Pallet Town," Gary said, trying to keep his tone neutral. "I plan to participate in the Indigo Plateau Conference, but the current situation at the Saffron Gym is affecting my progress in collecting the required badges."

Najun gave a nod of understanding. "Sabrina has her issues, but if you're strong enough to defeat her, she will not intentionally make things difficult for you," he said, his voice tinged with resignation.

"Mr. Najun," Gary pressed, "Do you think a powerful Psychic, along with a Psychic-type Pokémon, could defeat Sabrina in a one-on-one battle if the level gap isn't too large?"

Najun looked at Gary, taken aback by the question. It was clear the young Trainer was more astute than he initially seemed.

Gary continued, "And from what I understand, using Psychic during a battle might even be considered a foul in some circumstances, don't you think?"

Najun's expression darkened, realizing where Gary was going with this. He had been too willing to defend Sabrina, but the truth was undeniable.

Gary wasn't wrong. In the original story, when Ash first faced Sabrina, her Abra evolved directly into a Kadabra during the fight. Abra, known for its limited offensive capabilities, could only use Teleport to escape from danger until it evolved. But Sabrina's Kadabra was a formidable opponent. It could use Psychic to manipulate moves like Thunderbolt and redirect them.

Gary had tested a similar scenario with his Exeggutor during training. When Wartortle used Water Gun, Exeggutor's Confusion could only deflect the attack, not fully counter it. It was evident that Sabrina's ability to use Psychic was far beyond what most Trainers could handle.

And Sabrina had used Psychic to assist her Kadabra against Ash. It was no longer a battle between Pokémon; it was a contest of will between Ash and Sabrina herself.

Najun's face sagged as Gary exposed the issue with such clarity.

"You're right," Najun said softly, a deep sigh escaping him. "Sabrina's Psychic powers have surpassed even mine. I can't do anything about it anymore."

Gary understood that Najun was speaking from the heart. Sabrina had been a talented and happy child once, but something had gone terribly wrong along the way. Najun, despite being a Psychic master, had become powerless against his daughter's growing power.

Looking at the defeated figure before him, Gary couldn't help but feel sympathy for Najun. It was hard to imagine the man in front of him had once been a respected Psychic.

"Do you know when Sabrina started to change?" Gary asked, hoping to learn more about her past.

Najun paused, then responded quietly, "Sabrina began to change when she was about eight years old. At the time, I was focused on running the gym and the Psychic school, so I didn't pay much attention. Two years ago, she suddenly asked me to give up my position as Gym Leader and kicked me out of the gym."

Gary's brow furrowed. "What made her change so suddenly? Did something happen during her Psychic training?"

"I don't know," Najun admitted, looking helpless. "She started becoming distant, and I thought it was just a phase. I didn't realize what was going on until it was too late."

Gary was quiet for a moment, deep in thought. "Could her change have something to do with a doll?" he asked, his voice tentative.

Najun's eyes widened. "A doll?" he echoed, as if the very idea shocked him. "What do you mean?"

"I've heard of something that might help explain this," Gary continued. "I once discussed Psychic powers with my grandfather. He mentioned that a Psychic's personality could change due to a practice called Imprison. Perhaps that's what Sabrina has done."

"Imprison…" Najun's voice was filled with realization. The term had stirred up memories of Sabrina's early training.

Najun's mind went back in time, to when Sabrina was just six years old. She had been an exceptionally bright child with remarkable Psychic potential. Najun had started teaching her about Psychic abilities, and she mastered them quickly. However, as he became busy with the gym and school, he left Sabrina to study on her own, thinking she was fine.

But things weren't fine. Sabrina's growing powers went unchecked. Over time, she grew more withdrawn, and eventually, she used her abilities in ways that disturbed Najun.

"I never paid enough attention to her," Najun muttered, his voice low. "She was left alone too much, studying by herself while I focused on my duties. That's when everything started to change."

Gary, who had been listening carefully, noticed a sudden shift in Najun's expression. He could see the gears turning in the older man's mind. It was clear that Najun was beginning to understand the depth of the issue.

"Do you think Sabrina's change is linked to the doll she keeps with her?" Gary asked, pushing him further.

"I'm not sure," Najun confessed. "But after she started isolating herself, she began carrying around a doll that resembled her childhood self. It was around that time that everything changed."

Gary frowned. "This doll must be important. I think it might be linked to Sabrina's condition. The doll could be a manifestation of her own psyche, something that has trapped her real self."

Najun stared at Gary, his mind racing. "So you think Sabrina used her Psychic powers to Imprison her own personality? Could the doll represent that side of her that has been suppressed?"

Gary nodded slowly. "Exactly. It's a dangerous form of manipulation, and it could explain why she's so cold and distant now. If she created this doll when she was younger, it could have grown into something that's influencing her behavior now."

Najun was silent for a long time. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, but the solution was still elusive.

Finally, Najun spoke again, his voice heavy. "Gary, I need you to help me. This is dangerous, but I'll do everything I can to keep you safe."

Gary's heart raced. "What do you want me to do?"

"I believe Sabrina's issue began when she created this doll," Najun said. "I think the only way to break the spell is to destroy the doll. If the doll is destroyed, Sabrina may be able to return to normal."

Gary's mind buzzed with excitement. Najun had finally understood the root of Sabrina's problem.

"Then what do I need to do?" Gary asked eagerly.

Najun hesitated. "You'll need to confront Sabrina and destroy the doll she keeps with her. If you do that, Sabrina should be freed from the influence of the doll and return to her old self."

Gary nodded with determination. He understood the task before him. It was a dangerous mission, but one that could save Sabrina from her own darkness.

As he prepared to face the Saffron Gym, Gary knew that this wouldn't be just another battle. This was a fight for Sabrina's soul—and he wasn't going to let her remain trapped any longer.
