"Ahhh!!!"
Seeing the Pokémon Meiko released as her final contender, several spectators with weaker nerves at the edges of the battlefield let out terrified screams and shrank back in fear.
Yes, the Pokémon Meiko sent out was none other than Gyarados, the infamous Water-type Pokémon.
Having recently endured an attack from a school of Gyarados, many ordinary passengers were still deeply traumatized and filled with dread at the sight of one.
Meiko's Gyarados clearly possessed the Intimidate ability, and the collective fear among the crowd only amplified its effects.
For most of the ordinary spectators, the oppressive aura from Gyarados completely snuffed out any thoughts of resistance, leaving them paralyzed with fear.
Of course, such intimidation had no effect on Sato, a Trainer who had personally captured a Gyarados before.
Similarly, Golbat, who had already defeated several Gyarados in the past, remained entirely unfazed.
Towering over the battlefield, Gyarados's enormous frame made Golbat seem tiny by comparison. Its blue-scaled body gleamed with an oily sheen, exuding an air of incredible toughness.
With its upper body rising above the water, Gyarados fixed its ferocious gaze on the airborne Golbat, its menacing aura strong enough to make even the bravest shudder.
"Interesting. To have earned the approval of a Gyarados, such a notoriously aggressive Pokémon… that does take some skill," Sato thought to himself, his expression calm despite the appearance of the fearsome Pokémon.
Using his system's scanning ability, he quickly reviewed Gyarados's stats:
Pokémon: Gyarados
Level: 36
Type: Water/Flying
Ability: Intimidate
Gender: Male
Known Moves: Bite, Thrash, Leer, Twister, Ice Fang, Aqua Tail, Scary Face, Dragon Rage, Hydro Pump (Tutor), Protect (TM), Hyper Beam (TM), Thunderbolt (TM), Ice Beam (TM), Flamethrower (TM)
.....
"So this Gyarados is her ace Pokémon. What a bold investment," Sato mused, his expression darkening.
The joy he'd felt moments earlier from Golbat's victory over Skarmory was now replaced by a deep sense of unease.
Wild Gyarados were already terrifying creatures. However, they often lost control due to their uncontrollable rage, making them susceptible to strategic takedowns by skilled Trainers.
But once a Gyarados is captured and trained, its potential grows exponentially.
With careful nurturing, technical machines (TMs), and the use of specialized Pokémon items, a trained Gyarados becomes a force to be reckoned with.
More importantly, when a Gyarados truly bonds with its Trainer, its rage can be suppressed, unlocking its full potential.
Some Trainers with deep bonds can even dispel the innate anger within Gyarados entirely, granting it a clear and focused mind.
The Gyarados before them clearly had a strong bond with Meiko. It was likely that she had raised it from its days as a Magikarp, painstakingly training it until it evolved into the fearsome beast it was now.
Indeed, this was the truth. Meiko, a Trainer from humble beginnings, had no starter Pokémon given to her. Her first Pokémon had been a Magikarp she caught herself.
Through her relentless efforts and unwavering dedication, that Magikarp eventually leaped the dragon's gate and evolved into Gyarados—the fruit of her determination. (A true "Fisherwoman Trainer.")
Due to the deep bond between Meiko and her Gyarados, even after Magikarp evolved and its temperament drastically changed, it continued to recognize Meiko as its trusted Trainer and regarded her as family.
Gyarados followed her commands without hesitation.
Although the referee's legs were trembling with fear, he maintained his professional demeanor.
Unlike most of the audience, who had retreated in terror, he steadied his nerves and announced the battle's start.
"Gyarados, finish it! Use Thunderbolt!"
No sooner had the referee's declaration ended than Meiko's voice turned cold. She immediately ordered Gyarados to unleash a powerful attack.
At her command, Gyarados's eyes flashed menacingly, and a lightning bolt as thick as a water barrel erupted from the three horns atop its head, hurtling at Golbat in midair with blinding speed.
Golbat, already battered from its battles with Seadra and Skarmory, was visibly fatigued, its body riddled with injuries.
Even though Gyarados's base Special Attack stat wasn't particularly high, a super-effective Thunderbolt would surely spell defeat.
"Protect! Put some distance between you two!" Sato commanded, his voice calm but urgent.
Encased in a shimmering green energy shield from Protect, Golbat successfully blocked the powerful attack. It then flapped its wings weakly, retreating to a safer distance.
With just a single move, Gyarados had forced Golbat into full retreat.
"You're not getting away! Use Ice Beam!"
Seeing Golbat's struggling escape, Meiko smirked slightly and ordered Gyarados to press the attack.
As the thunder faded, a freezing blue beam erupted from Gyarados's gaping maw, the surrounding temperature plummeting instantly.
The Ice Beam Gyarados unleashed was far more potent than the one Seadra had used earlier.
"Dodge it! Use Hidden Power!" Sato countered quickly.
Compared to Thunderbolt, the speed of Ice Beam was slower. Golbat, with every ounce of its remaining strength, beat its wings furiously and managed to evade the freezing attack.
In response, a yellow energy orb began forming in front of Golbat's mouth.
With precision, the orb shot toward Gyarados. Mid-flight, the energy ball exploded into a flurry of glowing electric orbs, raining down toward Gyarados like a scattered volley of sparks.
"Take it down! Thunderbolt again!"
Ignoring the incoming electric energy from Hidden Power, Meiko commanded Gyarados to strike with another Thunderbolt.
Although Golbat's Hidden Power (Electric-type) had the advantage of a four-times effectiveness against Gyarados, its damage was only enough to make the massive Pokémon flinch slightly. It was still far from incapacitating.
With a powerful roar, Gyarados unleashed another massive bolt of lightning from its horns, moving at lightning speed.
This time, Golbat, exhausted and without access to another Protect, was too slow to dodge.
The devastating Thunderbolt struck Golbat squarely, enveloping it in a brilliant flash of electricity.
Moments later, as the electricity faded, the charred and battered Golbat plummeted from the sky, landing unconscious on the water's surface.
"Thank you for your hard work, Golbat."
Sato's gaze softened as he looked at Golbat, now unable to battle.
He calmly retrieved it into its PokéBall and raised his head, meeting the intimidating gaze of Gyarados, who was now glaring down at him.
"Roar!!!"
Gyarados let out a triumphant roar, its voice reverberating through the battlefield.
An overwhelming pressure bore down on Sato, unlike anything he had faced before.
