With a loud splash, Skarmory's body stiffened, paralyzed by sudden electric sparks, and its heavy frame plummeted from the sky, crashing into the water and sending up a towering wave.
"It seems Nidoran's Thunderbolt triggered its additional effect. Not bad at all," Sato remarked, his eyes lighting up as a small smile crept onto his face. Inside, he couldn't help but feel a surge of joy.
(Note: At this stage, Nidoran's ability is still Hustle, not Sheer Force. Sheer Force is only available after evolving into its final form, Nidoking.)
"Come back, Nidoran. You did exceptionally well. Your efforts won't go to waste. Leave the rest of the battle to your teammates," Sato said as he recalled the fainted Nidoran into its PokéBall.
His expression returned to a calm, stoic demeanor as he looked across the battlefield at Meiko, whose face had turned ashen with frustration.
"This is infuriating! How could this happen? Such bad luck! The additional effect of Thunderbolt actually activated! What now? With Skarmory paralyzed, its speed is drastically reduced, and all the effort I've put in so far has been wasted," Meiko fumed, her anger evident as panic began to creep in.
She understood the implications all too well. Now that Skarmory was paralyzed, the advantage she had painstakingly built up was gone.
Even though Golbat's wings were still recovering from frostbite, the paralyzed Skarmory would struggle to match its speed.
Worse still, there was always the risk of another paralysis-induced mishap, making it almost impossible for Skarmory to fight effectively.
"Come on out, Golbat! It's time to show your strength once again," Sato called out as he sent Golbat back onto the battlefield.
Having rested for some time, Golbat's frostbitten wings were much improved, and its stamina had partially recovered.
On the other side, Skarmory, having taken a plunge into the water, flapped its wings furiously as it emerged, soaked and seething with frustration.
Its drenched feathers weighed it down as it struggled to ascend into the air.
However, from the way it coughed intermittently while flying, it was clear Skarmory had swallowed a significant amount of water. Its current state was visibly sluggish and far from its peak performance.
Meanwhile, in a private room elsewhere, Mary and a tall, burly blond man sat on a large sofa, watching a live feed of the battle on a massive screen.
Behind them stood seven individuals, each dressed in distinct attire. Among the group were Heiji Kuroya and the female Trainer who had previously ambushed Sato.
The group was focused on the screen, which displayed the ongoing Pokémon battle between Meiko and Sato.
"Hahaha! Mary, your subordinate's luck is terrible. Skarmory got paralyzed! If she loses this one too, all your people will be eliminated," the blonde man, Hector, said, laughing boisterously as he shot a smug look at Mary.
"Don't be so quick to judge, Hector. Meiko's full strength hasn't been revealed yet," Mary replied coolly.
"Instead of mocking me, you should worry more about your prized pupil, Shuuji Ikeda. Look at his opponent, that Trainer Anna. Her strategy is entirely tailored to counter him. If he loses too, we might not have a single representative left in the finals."
The blond man, Hector, was met with a sharp glare and a sarcastic retort from Mary, clearly displeased by his comment.
On the screen, next to the image of Sato's battle against Meiko, another split-screen view displayed a match between Anna and an incredibly ordinary-looking man with a buzz cut.
As always, Anna exuded an air of composure, calmly orchestrating her Pokémon's attacks without a trace of arrogance or panic.
Each move she directed seemed to lead her opponent by the nose, forcing them to constantly react and struggle to keep up.
However, the buzz-cut man, identified as Shuuji Ikeda, remained entirely unfazed. His poker face betrayed no emotion, and his calm, steady eyes revealed not even the slightest ripple of tension.
He spoke rarely, but each command he gave was timed impeccably, allowing his Pokémon to narrowly evade the traps Anna had so meticulously set.
At this point, Anna's Level 35 Venusaur had cornered Ikeda's Level 35 Ursaring, leaving it in a dire situation.
Yet, thanks to Ursaring's Quick Feet ability and its strategic use of the rocky terrain for evasive maneuvers, coupled with Ikeda's flawlessly timed directions, Ursaring managed to remain as slippery as an eel, much to Anna's growing frustration.
"This Anna is indeed a talented Trainer," Hector said with a dismissive smirk.
"Gathering data to study her opponents gives her an edge, but data can be deceptive, especially against someone like him, who excels at improvisation and thrives on unpredictability. Watch closely—she'll soon lose, and it won't be pretty."
True to his words, Ikeda's hidden strategy was finally unveiled. The Ursaring that had been engaging Venusaur in a back-and-forth was, in fact, a Substitute.
Somehow, the real Ursaring had used Dig to sneak behind a massive boulder and come up directly behind Venusaur.
With a devastating combination of Fire Punch and Ice Punch, Ursaring unleashed a fiery and icy barrage that left Venusaur collapsing to the ground in defeat.
Venusaur's fall caught Anna completely off guard. From that moment onward, her meticulously crafted strategy began to unravel, like a machine with a critical component broken, until it finally fell apart entirely.
In the end, Anna lost—and not just lost, but suffered a humiliating defeat, with her entire team swept by Ikeda's Ursaring in a one-on-three battle.
Meanwhile, Sato's battle against Meiko had reached its final stages.
Skarmory, still paralyzed, could no longer compete with Golbat in terms of speed. In the ensuing aerial battle, Golbat maintained a dominant position throughout.
In this match, Sato finally unleashed Golbat's hidden ace: Hidden Power (Electric-type), a move specifically prepared to counter Skarmory.
Combined with the occasional paralysis-induced interruptions, Golbat managed to take down Skarmory with virtually no damage.
Forced into a corner, Meiko reluctantly sent out her final ace.
"ROAR!!!"
An ear-splitting roar shook the entire arena.
A fearsome dragon cloaked in blue scales, exuding a menacing aura, appeared in the water arena.
