How could a level 19 Nidoran possibly defeat a level 34 Skarmory?
This question churned through Sato's mind, sparking ideas. The key lay in narrowing the immense 15-level gap as much as possible.
After careful consideration, Sato's gaze fixed on the deep waters of the battlefield.
"The water, the floating platforms… These could be useful," Sato muttered, a plan forming in his mind as he studied the vast pool that made up the arena.
At the referee's signal, the battle began.
For now, Skarmory, dominating the skies, didn't rush in for a close-range assault. Following Meiko's command, it unleashed Air Cutter at the diminutive Nidoran below.
Though Skarmory wasn't as skilled with Air Cutter as Golbat, its proficiency was somewhere between novice and intermediate. However, the sheer number of air blades it produced was impressive.
With a sudden sweep of its steel wings, coated in flying-type energy, over 20 air blades hurtled downward, targeting a ten-meter radius around Nidoran. The broad attack area left little room for the smaller Pokémon to evade.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
The sharp sound of slicing air filled the arena as the air blades rained down.
Faced with the aerial assault, Nidoran remained unfazed. Its small eyes gleamed with determination, and its large ears twitched upright.
Without even waiting for Sato's command, it used Double Kick to leap away from its current platform.
Bounding quickly across the floating platforms, Nidoran's ears twitched repeatedly, allowing it to anticipate and dodge the incoming air blades.
When evasion wasn't possible, its eyes lit up with a blue glow, causing the blades to briefly pause mid-air, granting it just enough time to escape unscathed.
Skarmory, frustrated that its attacks had been completely evaded by an opponent of much lower level, flapped its wings furiously, launching another barrage of Air Cutter.
The sky was soon filled with a relentless downpour of air blades. However, many missed their mark due to poor accuracy.
Nidoran took advantage of the openings, moving deftly within the confined area and even using counter-moves to neutralize some of the attacks, defusing the situation yet again.
Unwilling to admit defeat, Skarmory redoubled its efforts, continuing to launch wave after wave of Air Cutter, as if determined to prove it could land a hit.
"Dive into the water and take cover behind the platforms!"
At this point, Sato, who had been observing quietly, finally gave an order to the panting Nidoran.
Hearing this, Nidoran's eyes lit up with understanding. Without hesitation, it leapt into the water with a splash, submerging itself beneath the platform it had previously been standing on.
These platforms, designed for the water battlefield, were far from ordinary. They were incredibly sturdy, crafted to withstand considerable force.
After all, if they were easily destroyed by water-type Pokémon, it would be nearly impossible for non-aquatic Pokémon to battle effectively in such an arena.
As Skarmory's Air Cutter struck the floating platforms, they left only shallow marks. Full destruction was still a long way off.
"Skarmory, stop wasting time and finish it with Drill Peck!"
Seeing that Skarmory's probing attacks had all been evaded, and that Nidoran now had a method to hide, Meiko's once-confident expression stiffened.
She immediately ordered Skarmory to switch to an aggressive close-range attack.
Meiko was experienced. She knew that while Nidoran was significantly weaker than Skarmory, relying solely on ranged attacks to wear it down was inefficient and a waste of energy.
Skarmory's heavy armor wasn't light. Maintaining flight alone required significant stamina, let alone executing continuous attacks from the air.
Nidoran had demonstrated excellent evasive abilities and cleverly used the floating platforms as shields.
Even if Skarmory managed to deplete Nidoran's stamina with its long-range attacks and defeat it unscathed, Skarmory's energy reserves would be significantly drained in the process.
Sato still had Golbat and one more Pokémon waiting in reserve. If Skarmory exhausted itself too much, it could be vulnerable to Golbat, who would have had time to recover some stamina.
Although the saying goes, "a lion uses its full strength even against a rabbit," Meiko had no desire to engage in such a losing trade-off.
Thus, Meiko was determined to have Skarmory finish the battle swiftly, even at some cost, to conserve its stamina and combat readiness for the upcoming battles against Sato's other Pokémon.
Hearing her command, Skarmory's eyes flashed with determination, and it transformed into a spinning silver top, diving from the sky like a whirling blade.
Surrounding the silver top was a swirling wind, adding to its sharp, ferocious momentum.
As Skarmory descended, spinning toward the water battlefield, the area where Nidoran was submerged began to churn. The powerful spiral airflow created a small whirlpool, trapping Nidoran at its center.
Realizing the danger, Nidoran quickly climbed back onto the floating platform. The platform, now stuck at the whirlpool's center, was buffeted by intense winds.
The force from Skarmory's spinning assault even caused Nidoran's skin to sting.
It was clear Meiko aimed to finish Nidoran with a single decisive strike.
"Use Double Kick and Confusion to jump out of the whirlpool. Don't try to resist directly!"
Sato quickly saw through Meiko's intentions and ordered Nidoran to dive into the water to escape.
Nidoran followed Sato's command without hesitation. A white glow emanated from its feet as it leapt forward, attempting to escape the whirlpool's range.
Just as it was about to leave the danger zone, its eyes glowed blue, and a psychic aura enveloped it, allowing it to propel itself further with Confusion.
"Don't let it get away! Go after it!"
Meiko, noticing the attempt to escape, smirked with disdain and shouted her command.
Hearing her, Skarmory twisted its spinning body mid-air, redirecting its Drill Peck to pursue the airborne Nidoran.
"Counter with your strongest Thunderbolt!"
Sato was shocked by the revelation that Meiko had trained Skarmory's Drill Peck to the point it could change direction mid-attack.
Knowing Nidoran had no way to evade, he had no choice but to command a direct counterattack.
In an instant, a golden electric current surged from Nidoran's horn, striking the spinning silver Skarmory. However, Skarmory seemed unfazed by the attack and continued its relentless charge.
The spinning silver top struck Nidoran with full force, sending it flying.
A moment later, a loud "splash!" echoed as Nidoran hit the water hard, creating a massive wave.
When Nidoran resurfaced, it was evident that it had lost the ability to battle.
"In the end, the level gap was just too much," Sato thought with some regret as he watched Nidoran being defeated by Skarmory.
However, when he turned his gaze to Skarmory still hovering above, his previously grave expression softened.
Nidoran's final attack hadn't been in vain. High above, faint arcs of electricity coursed through Skarmory's body. Suddenly, its movements stiffened, and the steel bird plummeted from the sky.
