Chapter 21: Chapter 21: A Shocking Encounter with the Roger Pirates

This pirate pursuit battle could be described as starting strong but ending weak. The others essentially did nothing as Akainu handled everything by himself. While this was undoubtedly a good thing, some felt dissatisfied. However, under Akainu's dominance, they could only accept it.

"Well, this works too—saves us the trouble of taking action."

In the kitchen, Peveton chuckled as he spoke to Jon. For him, not needing to fight made things easier.

Jon had a similar perspective, but when thinking of Akainu, he sighed and said, "That guy Akainu has too straightforward a personality, especially when it comes to dealing with pirates. He never considers the thoughts of others. People like him are truly a double-edged sword."

"A double-edged sword? You actually came up with such a term. I think everyone is more dissatisfied with him than anything else," Peveton said.

Jon replied, "This world respects strength above all. Other people's dissatisfaction doesn't matter at all to someone like Akainu. Don't be fooled by how ruthless he is in his actions. In reality, he's incredibly smart—he just chooses who to show that to."

Thanks to Kizaru, Jon had a decent relationship with Akainu and understood what kind of person he was. Ruthless? Yes, but also someone who could read the situation clearly.

Peveton's chubby face jiggled as he laughed and said, "Well, we never planned on achieving great feats or securing high positions. Life's short; might as well just get by."

Jon was speechless. His current "go-with-the-flow" attitude was only temporary since he lacked sufficient strength for now. He was merely waiting for the right moment.

But Peveton? He truly didn't care. While others racked their brains trying to earn merit, Peveton only sought an easy life. To Jon, it was obvious that Peveton had some solid backing. Otherwise, there was no way he could be so confident.

From this event alone, Jon already understood that this sea trial was destined to be a dull affair.

As things turned out, Jon's expectations were spot on. Over the next ten days, they encountered two more pirate groups, but both were minor.

In one instance, Akainu mercilessly wiped out all the pirates. In the other, Vitus, with his team ready, boarded the pirate ship and forced Akainu to restrain his magma attacks. Vitus then claimed the credit for defeating the pirates.

Jon merely watched the competition for merits like a spectator. What teamwork was this supposed to be? This was no trial—it was a joke!

He was certain their group was doomed to fail this test.

In contrast, Bor... no, Kizaru's group likely had Kizaru taking the lead. He was far more tactful than Akainu and didn't have someone like Vitus causing internal strife. They were undoubtedly in a much better situation.

"Forget it. Why overthink it? Let them fight amongst themselves," Jon muttered.

Following them all this time, Garp seemed to be having a very relaxed time. With Bruch constantly reporting updates, Garp maintained real-time control of the warship's movements. Since nothing unexpected occurred, his days were rather comfortable.

"These kids have been pretty lucky not to run into any tough pirates. But this boredom is killing me. I wonder how things are on Zephyr's end. At this rate, Dragon's group will probably come out on top," Garp mused.

The warship had yet to encounter any notable pirates, which could be considered either good or bad luck. The minor pirates they had dealt with were clearly not enough to secure victory. Adding to that, their internal conflicts only made matters worse.

"In less than ten days, we'll be back at headquarters. I thought this trip would be interesting, but it turns out staying at headquarters would've been more worthwhile," Peveton complained to Jon. He was bored with life aboard the ship and tired of the repetitive meals due to limited ingredients.

Jon nodded in agreement. "I feel the same way. We've been out for so long, but there's been no progress. I'm learning and improving faster at headquarters. Here, the battles end before I even lift a finger—so boring."

So far, he hadn't had the chance to fight at all. He had hoped to face pirates in grueling battles and improve his skills. But what was this supposed to be?

"Spotted a massive warship! It appears to be flying a pirate flag!"

Mills, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly shouted, startling everyone. Akainu, who had been on deck, rushed over immediately.

"What's going on?"

Mills looked grim as he quickly reported, "A massive warship has been spotted—completely unlike the pirate ships we've encountered before. It's flying a pirate flag, but I don't recognize it."

Akainu took the telescope from Mills and looked through it, his brows furrowing deeply.

"This pirate ship is far beyond what ordinary pirate groups could possess. Do you recognize that pirate flag?"

Mills shook his head. "I wasn't on the Grand Line before. After arriving at headquarters, I haven't been out much, so how could I recognize pirate flags like that?"

In this era, information didn't spread as quickly as it would in the future. The world's largest newspaper agency was just beginning to emerge, and news birds couldn't yet reach areas like the Calm Belt.

Moreover, this batch of cadets had been training exclusively at headquarters and had never ventured out before. Even through hearsay, it was unlikely they'd know much.

"Go call Jon. He might recognize it," Akainu ordered.

Having known Jon for some time, Akainu regarded him as someone with broader knowledge, given the strange and insightful things Jon often said. When faced with uncertainty, his first instinct was to call Jon.

Jon arrived quickly, looking confused. "What's wrong, Akainu?"

He had been cooking with Peveton in the kitchen when someone urgently came to get him, saying Akainu needed him.

Handing Jon the telescope, Akainu explained, "We've spotted a large pirate ship, completely unlike the ones we've encountered before. None of us recognize the pirate flag. See if you can identify it."

Taking the telescope, Jon initially didn't think much of it. But when his gaze landed on the pirate flag, he froze, his body trembling violently. The telescope slipped from his hand with a loud "clunk."

"What is it?"

Seeing Jon's shocked expression, Akainu's face immediately darkened. He had known Jon long enough to recognize that this reaction meant Jon had identified the ship—and it was no trivial matter.

Jon struggled to maintain his composure as he urgently shouted, "Turn around! Quickly! We cannot handle them. Turn the ship around now! Damn it—how could we run into them? What are they doing in the first half of the Grand Line?"

Akainu didn't move, instead pressing for answers. "What's going on? Who are they?"

"Oh, this is rich! Our little genius is so scared he's calling for a retreat. A Navy ship running from pirates? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard."

At that moment, Vitus and his two cronies approached, mocking Jon with sneering laughter.

Akainu frowned, about to speak, but Jon, who was usually calm and reserved, suddenly snapped and roared at Vitus, "You're the joke here! Get lost!"

Vitus, stunned by the outburst, quickly grew furious. "Jon, are you looking for death?"

Jon countered without backing down, "I don't have time to argue with an idiot like you. If you want to fight, wait until we're somewhere safe. Then I'll gladly take you on. For now, stay out of my way!"

Jon, with his memories of two lifetimes, wasn't fazed by someone like Vitus. Though Vitus was strong, Jon didn't see him as a real threat.

For now, survival was his top priority. Jon had no time for petty squabbles.

"Commander Bruch!" Jon quickly approached Bruch, who had been observing from a distance.

"Let me go! I'll teach that kid a lesson!" Vitus roared furiously, but the others restrained him. While Vitus was too angry to notice, the others realized something serious was happening. For Jon to react this way, it had to be a major issue.

Bruch smiled faintly as he watched Jon approach. "You've got guts all of a sudden. What's going on?"

Jon, his face grim, replied, "Commander Bruch, I'm not joking. You need to contact Vice Admiral Garp immediately and inform him we've encountered a major threat. Tell him to get here as fast as possible, or we're all dead."

Bruch's eyes narrowed. He had secretly communicated with Garp several times, but how did Jon know?

Still, seeing Jon's urgency and sincerity, he didn't press the issue.

"Is it the pirates you spotted?"

Jon nodded. "If I'm not mistaken, that ship and flag belong to the Roger Pirates."

"What? The Roger Pirates?"

Bruch, who had remained composed until now, shuddered and immediately asked, "Are you certain?"

"See for yourself," Jon replied.

Bruch rushed

to the deck and took the telescope. A single glance made his face pale.

As a Marine Commander, Bruch was well aware of the infamous Roger Pirates. Not only did this ship match their description, but it seemed they had already spotted the Navy ship and were heading their way.
