Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Roger and Rayleigh

"Turn around, turn around immediately."

Without needing Jon to say anything further, Rear Admiral Bruch immediately gave the order, shouting at Akainu, "That's a major pirate crew from the New World—the Roger Pirates. They're not someone you can handle. Turn the ship around and head northwest. Vice Admiral Garp, sent by headquarters, is in that direction."

After speaking, he wasted no time and quickly took out a Den Den Mushi to make a call.

Garp was lounging in his chair under the sun, eyes half-closed, looking like he was about to fall asleep.

Suddenly, the sound of someone approaching in a hurry made him lazily open his eyes. His adjutant, looking tense, rushed over and said, "Vice Admiral, there's a problem."

"What's wrong?" Garp asked, still not grasping the gravity of the situation, his tone relaxed.

The adjutant quickly replied, "Bruch just called. The trial ship has encountered a major enemy—it's the Roger Pirates."

"What?"

Garp abruptly jumped from his chair, exclaiming, "The Roger Pirates? Are you certain?"

"Yes, confirmed."

Garp's expression changed drastically. He knew exactly what level of threat the Roger Pirates posed. Even he might struggle to deal with them, let alone the twenty recruits on that ship.

He was well aware of how important this batch of recruits was. If anything went wrong, it would be a huge loss for the Navy.

"Damn it. What's that bastard Roger doing here? And how did he run into the trial ship? Get the warship moving faster. Hopefully, we can still make it in time."

As the warship sped up, Garp turned to his adjutant and said, "Tell Bruch that if the Roger Pirates attack, use my name. That bastard Roger may be wild and reckless, but if he hears that I'm nearby, he might show some restraint."

Garp had some understanding of Roger. After all, the two of them had once teamed up to fight Rocks. He also knew that Roger's ship was filled with powerful crew members, making it one of the toughest pirate crews in the world to deal with.

There was little he could do now but race to the scene and hope Roger wouldn't attack the trial ship. If he did, those twenty recruits likely wouldn't stand a chance.

"Twenty days without any issues, and just as it's about to end, something like this happens. My luck is awful," Garp grumbled.

Meanwhile, as Jon and the others spotted the Oro Jackson and prepared to turn around, the pirates aboard the Oro Jackson also noticed the lone Navy warship on the vast sea.

"Captain, there's a Navy warship ahead. Should we go after it?"

Onboard the massive ship were pirates dressed in flamboyant, eccentric outfits. This was none other than the infamous Roger Pirates.

At this time, Roger wasn't yet the Pirate King, but he was already one of the most notorious pirates in the world. Although the title of "Three Legendary Pirates" hadn't been coined yet, only a few pirates on the seas could rival Roger.

Roger, now in his forties, was a rugged-looking man wearing a captain's coat and hat. His jet-black hair and distinctive curled mustache gave him a messy appearance, which stood in stark contrast to the clean and refined blond man in glasses standing beside him.

"Navy, huh? We've been chased by them plenty in the past. Now it's rare to run into a lone Navy ship. We're bored anyway, so let's chase it down and give the newbies some training."

A few months ago, Roger had returned from the New World to the East Blue and then traveled to the first half of the Grand Line. Along the way, he had recruited new crew members and was preparing to re-enter the New World.

"They're coming after us!"

Mills, who had been watching, shouted as he saw the Roger Pirates' ship closing in.

Rear Admiral Bruch's face turned grim. He said to Akainu and Jon, "Vice Admiral Garp is still a distance away. It'll take him at least twenty minutes to get here."

"Is that what you call backup? Being this far away?" Jon cursed internally. "Anime really can't be trusted. They always said the Roger Pirates were like the Straw Hat Pirates, chasing freedom and adventure, avoiding unnecessary violence."

"But look at this. Pirates chasing a Navy warship—is this something a freedom-loving adventure crew would do?"

Pirates were pirates, no matter their reasons. From the moment they chose the pirate's path, they ceased to be ordinary people and became criminals.

They say the Straw Hats never killed innocent people, but how many died as a result of their adventures?

Jon didn't believe in the safety of "protagonist privilege." If the Roger Pirates caught them, those pirates wouldn't hesitate to strike.

Though anxious, Jon forced himself to stay calm. He could only hope the warship was fast enough to avoid being caught by the Roger Pirates.

At the same time, Jon couldn't help feeling curious about the legendary pirate crew. Just how many powerful individuals were on this ship?

Activating his Observation Haki, Jon expanded his perception across a vast area, encompassing the massive pirate ship.

As his Haki spread, Jon's face turned pale. On that ship, he sensed numerous strong presences, many of which were far stronger than himself. Some were even on par with Zephyr.

"So this is the Roger Pirates? Terrifying. No wonder they earned the title of Pirate King's crew. It's not just because Roger found the final island. Their combat strength alone makes them one of the top crews in the New World."

"A single pirate crew with several fighters as strong as Navy admirals. This is rare, even in the New World."

"Roger, Rayleigh, Gaban… This crew is filled with monstrous talent. Not to mention others whose strength we don't even know yet."

"Am I just really lucky, or horribly unlucky, to run into the Roger Pirates now?"

The Oro Jackson!

Throughout Roger's career, he had changed ships many times. But this one was special—the best ship he ever owned.

Built from the legendary Treasure Tree Adam, the Jackson was a treasure of a ship. Its acquisition had elevated the Roger Pirates' strength to a new level.

"Rayleigh, did you notice?" Roger suddenly asked Rayleigh.

Rayleigh, still sporting blond hair and glasses, looked every bit the elegant gentleman. He nodded.

"Yes, I noticed. Someone's observing us—not with their eyes, but with Haki."

Roger laughed heartily. "Looks like there's a capable guy on that warship. Even at this distance, they can sense us. If we weren't sharp enough, we might not have noticed it. There aren't many who can master Observation Haki to this level."

Rayleigh agreed. "To sense us from this far, I could do it too, but not with this level of ease. The Navy truly has its hidden talents."

"But since they've clearly recognized us and are running away, it'd be a shame not to meet such an interesting person. After all, how often do you cross paths with someone like that?"

At this point in time, Roger was gathering crewmates and preparing to sail to the final island. His body was still in good health, and he acted freely, doing whatever came to mind.

The Roger Pirates' ship was fast—faster than Jon's Navy warship. This allowed the distance between them to close rapidly.
