Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Jon's Terrifying Dominance

This time, the relationships among the forty students weren't very harmonious, at least not as pure as when Jon was in school in his previous life.

Everyone had their own goals, and even if they communicated, it was hard to form genuine friendships. After all, they were all adults, and adults are more focused on pursuing benefits, unless they are individuals without any vested interests.

The two groups of new recruits, who were going out to sea for the first time, were unaware that two warships were following them from behind.

"Spending every day at the headquarters is so boring. Although protecting these new recruits is a hassle, it's way more comfortable than staying at the headquarters. Hahaha, I knew I was clever to volunteer for this mission," a dog-headed hat-wearing Garp laughed arrogantly from the warship following Jon's group.

This elite class' practical test was something Zephyr had reported to Admiral Kong, and in order to maximize the new recruits' training, he had even made them form their own teams to hunt pirates, with only a Marine rear admiral on the warship to record their actions.

Such a thing had never happened before at the Marine Academy. In the past, new recruits did go on pirate-hunting missions, but that was always under the leadership of Marine strongmen. The recruits were just there to observe and rarely had the opportunity to act themselves.

Zephyr had requested such practical exercises, and after much consideration, Kong finally agreed. However, this group of recruits was exceptional, so they were still highly supervised.

To prevent any accidents, the Navy had sent two big names to protect them. One was naturally the instructor Zephyr, and the other was Garp, who had volunteered for the mission.

Zephyr was trailing behind the other group, while Garp was following Jon's group from behind, maintaining a safe distance so that they wouldn't be detected. In case of an emergency, the Marine rear admiral who was recording would contact them.

"Still no pirates?"

It had been two full days since they left Marine Headquarters, but to everyone's frustration, they hadn't encountered a single pirate.

Jon was also silently wondering. Although the first half of the Grand Line wasn't as chaotic as the New World, there were still plenty of pirates. Could it be that the Great Pirate Era hadn't begun yet, and thus pirates from the Four Seas hadn't flocked to the Grand Line?

In fact, if they had the support of Marine intelligence, Jon and the others wouldn't be blindly wandering around like headless chickens. But this time, the test was designed to assess them, so the Marine Headquarters had not provided any intel. Without intelligence, it was difficult to find pirates accurately.

The group, initially excited about going out to sea, had lost their enthusiasm after two days of aimless sailing. They only stopped to check out islands they passed by, and the rest of the time, they stayed aboard the warship.

In truth, many of Jon's group, coming from the Four Seas, didn't have a clear understanding of the Grand Line's situation.

In terms of area, the first half of the Grand Line wasn't as large as the Four Seas. The legend of the Pirate King's great treasure hadn't yet begun, and many pirates from the Four Seas weren't eager to go to the Grand Line.

Moreover, with the Marine Headquarters' power over the Grand Line, the pirates in the first half were still under Marine control. They had only been out for two days, and most of the time was spent drifting on the vast ocean, so encountering pirates was perfectly normal.

However, since Jon and the others were eager to beat the other group, their impatience was understandable.

For the next three days, there was still no combat. This long, uneventful voyage was something most people would struggle to endure. But for Jon and the others, as soldiers accustomed to this, they took it in stride, only growing more anxious as they waited.

Jon, however, wasn't anxious at all. Aside from helping Peveton in the kitchen, he spent his time studying his Devil Fruit abilities in his room.

While the others cared deeply about the results of the test, Jon wasn't concerned. All the recruits in this elite class would, at the very least, be assigned to a Marine branch in the Grand Line. With his abilities, as long as he was given time, rising to prominence was just a matter of time. There was no need to rush.

Peveton, the chef, had an even more relaxed attitude than Jon. In the time they had spent together, Jon never saw him training. He was either playing with food or resting. Peveton's days were quite leisurely.

As Peveton would put it, "After all that constant training back at Marine Headquarters, it's rare to get some free time, so I should enjoy it."

"Battle detected ahead, possibly pirates."

The ship's navigator, Mills, suddenly shouted, causing everyone who had been occupied with their own tasks to rush to the deck as quickly as possible.

Akainu was the fastest, but he didn't hurry. Instead, he waited for everyone to arrive before speaking.

"Mills, what did you see?"

Mills put down the binoculars and replied, "Two ships ahead are engaged in battle. They're probably pirates raiding another ship."

"Move in closer."

Upon hearing that there might be pirates, the recruits from the Elite Class all showed excitement. After waiting for so long, they had finally encountered pirates. They couldn't wait to go straight into battle.

"There are eighty-three signatures, no, now there are only eighty-two. Clearly, they are in combat, and people are dying. As for whether they are pirates, it's hard to say."

Jon suddenly spoke, and everyone around him looked at him.

"What are you talking about?" Vetus asked Jon.

"I'm talking about how many people are over there," Jon replied.

"How could you tell how many people are that far away? Are you joking?"

Vetus looked at him with disbelief. Even Mills couldn't see the situation clearly through his binoculars, but Jon had done nothing and could tell how many people were over there. Was his eyesight better than binoculars?

Akainu, however, wasn't like the others. He simply asked, "Are you sure, Jon?"

Jon replied, "You should know my ability. Just because others can't do something doesn't mean I can't. You shouldn't doubt me on this."

Akainu nodded. He spent a lot of time with Jon and knew Jon's acute perception, or his Observation Haki. While he had never witnessed Jon use his full power, he understood that Jon's Haki was strong.

"Accelerate forward. Everyone, prepare for battle."

The ship immediately increased speed, racing towards the location.

"The signatures have stabilized. There are only fifty-three left. The battle should be over."

Jon seemed almost like a radar as he relayed his perception to Akainu. He was confident in his Observation Haki; there was no way it could be wrong.

Besides, this distance wasn't even close to his perception limit.

Jon had once asked Zephyr about Observation Haki and had learned about his unique abilities. His Haki didn't have any special powers like others, but it was much stronger in range than normal people's. Even someone like Zephyr, a Marine Admiral, couldn't match the range of his Observation Haki. In fact, Zephyr had told him that his range was probably unique in the world.

That was why Jon was confident that his Observation Haki's advantage lay in its range, far surpassing what normal people could do.
