Chapter 18: Chapter 18: A Big Show
"Since no one can decide, let's vote on it. This isn't an easy task. It requires someone with responsibility and strength. After all, everyone is familiar with each other, so let's just vote directly."
Just as the remaining people hesitated, the eldest brother, Peveton, spoke up and immediately turned his gaze toward Jon: "I'll vote first. I choose Jon. The reason is that Jon has excellent analytical skills and a strong Observation Haki. At critical moments, he will definitely make the right judgment."
"Me?"
Jon was instantly confused. He had never thought about stepping forward, and he didn't expect it to fall on him. He had always thought that if he could keep a low profile, he would. After all, his goal of coming to the Marine Headquarters had been achieved, and he didn't need to draw attention to himself.
But he never imagined that someone would help him step forward, and it was Peveton, the oldest among them.
The oldest recommending the youngest? Could there be something fishy going on? He didn't recall doing anything to attract Peveton's attention, and they had barely exchanged words. How did this person know his traits?
Jon was puzzled, and the others looked at Peveton with disbelief, as if saying: "Are you joking?"
Although everyone didn't pay too much attention to age, it was obvious that Jon's age made it hard for them to trust him. A teenager who wasn't even eighteen—why should he be in charge? That was the thought in most people's minds.
Peveton twisted his chubby body and spread his hands: "Anyway, it's a vote. Naturally, I'll vote for someone I trust. I chose Jon. As for who you vote for, that's up to you."
"I also vote for Jon."
Suddenly, another person spoke up and voted for Jon.
Jon immediately had a gloomy look on his face. "Doberman... what are you doing? Although we're partners, you have to understand the situation. Didn't you see the looks on their faces?"
Out of the twenty people, Jon immediately got two votes, causing the others to look at each other in surprise.
"I choose Akainu. Akainu is the strongest and has outstanding leadership skills. I don't trust anyone else, and I'm only willing to believe in Akainu."
Finally, someone voted for someone else. The person they chose was none other than Akainu, the standout member of this session.
"I vote for Vetus."
"I also choose Akainu. Only the strongest can be the leader."
"Akainu, I also vote for him."
"Vetus is also strong, and he has been a soldier for seven years, most experienced in fighting pirates."
"Vetus."
"Akainu."
"Akainu."
"Vetus."
"I vote for Jon."
"Me too."
"..."
In the blink of an eye, seventeen people had voted, and the names appearing were only three: Akainu, Vetus, and Jon.
Akainu and Jon didn't need further explanation. Vetus, on the other hand, had been in the Marines for many years, previously serving in the West Blue, and was a Devil Fruit user. His strength and experience made him a popular choice.
What made Jon's scalp tingle was that he had received four votes, besides Peveton and Doberman, even the two responsible for operating the ship had voted for him, which made him very suspicious.
But it was also because he only had four votes that he breathed a sigh of relief.
Out of the seventeen votes already cast, Jon received four, Vetus got six, and Akainu got seven. Only the three of them had not voted yet.
Even if a miracle happened and Akainu and Vetus went crazy and voted for him, he was still the least likely person.
"I abstain!"
Jon immediately raised his hand to indicate he was abstaining.
Without hesitation, Akainu cast his vote for himself. With this, the result was clear: Vetus lost to Akainu by one vote.
"Since we have the result, then Akainu will be our group's commander. We..."
Peveton, the first one to suggest voting, was about to make a summary when he was suddenly interrupted.
"Stop talking. The other group has already set off. We can't be slower than them."
The person interrupting Peveton was Vetus, who wore an impatient look, his displeasure clearly showing.
Despite Vetus's rude behavior, Peveton didn't get angry. He still smiled, as if he didn't mind.
At this point, Akainu spoke in a deep voice: "Let's go."
Everyone quickly took their positions. Those in charge of sailing set sail, those who were observing did their job, and those who needed to find rooms did so. Akainu stood at the bow of the ship, his face as cold as ever, seemingly lost in thought.
"This group is interesting. I wonder how they will develop next."
The Marine Commander Bruh was in charge of overseeing and recording, watching the situation with great interest.
This time, his responsibility was heavy—not only to record but also to observe the characters and behaviors of this group. He had to submit a report afterward, so he dared not be careless.
Jon followed Peveton into the kitchen, watching Peveton work calmly and methodically.
"You came in with me. You're not just here to watch me cook, are you?" Peveton asked Jon.
Jon shrugged and said, "I'm just curious. Why did you vote for me? We don't seem that familiar, right?"
Peveton didn't stop his actions and said, "Like I said before, I think you're the most suitable. That's why I voted for you."
"Why? Akainu is the strongest among us, and Vetus is stronger than me. There are only twenty of us. Wouldn't it be more fitting for a stronger person to lead?" Jon asked.
Peveton replied, "If it was just about wiping out pirates, then yes, it would be best for the strongest to lead. But don't forget, our opponents this time aren't just pirates. We have another group of opponents. From Zefa's assignments, it's clear that the two sides are almost evenly matched. In such a situation, a good commander becomes especially important."
"Especially what?" Jon pressed, noticing that Peveton had stopped mid-sentence.
"Nothing," Peveton said after thinking for a moment, not continuing. This left Jon feeling uneasy—he hated it when people didn't finish their sentences.
"I voted for you because you're the most suitable. It's just that others want to show off. They can't see what I see."
"Take Akainu and Vetus, for example. Akainu is indeed the strongest. Among us, probably only Kizaru could match him."
"But Akainu is too ruthless, cold-blooded, impulsive, and easily swayed by emotions. Maybe it has something to do with his past. But based on his current performance, I don't think he's a qualified commander."
"As for Vetus, we're from the same sea, and I've heard some things about him. He's strong, but he's jealous and ruthless. Sometimes, to complete a mission, he would even abandon his comrades' lives. Do you think such a person is suitable to lead us?"
"As for you, yes, you're young, and you don't have as much experience as the others. You might not have participated in naval battles, but that's not a disadvantage. In fact, not having experience makes you more objective. We don't lack experienced people. Plus, you're very calm. Among us, you're the calmest, which makes you the best person to handle the big picture."
"Am I really that good?" Jon was surprised by Peveton's analysis.
"No," Peveton laughed. "After what just happened, I see some flaws."
"Like what?" Jon asked.
"You're too low-key. Or rather, you don't want to show yourself. You always try to hide behind the scenes. This is both a good and bad thing. It might be safer, but it's not a normal reaction for someone your age. So I'm curious. Why do you have this mindset? Shouldn't this be my strategy?"
Peveton smiled self-deprecatingly. He had noticed Jon's low-key nature before, but he didn't expect that even in the face of such temptation, Jon could still hold back.
Jon shrugged and said, "I call it being forced to be low-key. If I had Akainu's strength, I wouldn't need to be this low-key. Being low-key is just a result of not being strong enough. For people like me, standing out isn't always a good thing."
"That's true," Peveton agreed. "That's why I believe you're the best person for the role."
Jon didn't answer. He was still thinking about Peveton's words.
It was true that Jon preferred to avoid the spotlight. He didn't like being too conspicuous, as that would make it more difficult to keep his secrets. However, it was also true that he had no choice but to face this reality. Since Peveton had chosen him, he had to accept this new role.
