Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Practical Assessment

"Today, we won't have theory lessons, nor will we have training classes."

Standing on the podium, Zephyr scanned the crowd below, his expression serious as he said, "You've been learning from me for several months now, and the year is nearly up. Although you've made great progress and learned a lot, whether you've truly applied what you've learned, I'm afraid you don't fully understand yourselves."

"Today, we have a practical lesson."

"You all know that the Navy's responsibility is to maintain peace on the seas, and the greatest factor influencing peace on the seas is pirates. The purpose of today's lesson is to make you apply what you've learned and deal with pirates. Many of you have already had encounters with pirates, but I want to tell you, pirates on the Grand Line are different from those in the four seas."

"Dealing with pirates doesn't just rely on strength; it also requires leadership and judgment. In naval combat, the sea, weather, wind direction, and so on, are constantly changing. This is when you'll need to apply the knowledge you've learned."

Upon hearing Zephyr's words, everyone in the classroom exchanged glances, not expecting him to say this.

"After studying the situation, your instructors have decided that you will go to sea on your own to confront pirates. The forty of you will be divided into two groups, with twenty people per group."

"You will have one month for the exercise. We will assess you. The group that wins will receive bonus points that will affect your final evaluation."

"Perhaps some of you think these bonus points are unimportant, but you are very wrong."

"Since you became my students, I've been keeping track of your performance. Each of you has a personal record, and at the end, your scores will be aggregated. Your final score will determine your post-graduation assignments."

"If you perform well, you'll stay at the Navy Headquarters and take on important positions. If your performance is poor, you may be assigned to other branches. Therefore, how you officially join the Navy in the future depends on the results of this year's final evaluation."

When they heard that the final evaluation would affect their future assignments, most of the students' expressions changed.

Why did they all work so hard to get into this elite class? It was to become Zephyr's students, secure a good future, gain more resources, and achieve higher military ranks.

Now, with an evaluation that could affect their future, it was impossible not to take it seriously.

"Remember, you will be working as a team. The winning team will receive the same bonus points, there will be no difference in rewards. This evaluation focuses on teamwork, not individual strength."

"Each team will have one warship. Apart from your twenty members, no additional personnel will be provided. So, you'll have to rely on yourselves."

After quickly explaining the details of the evaluation, Zephyr gave the final order.

"Now, everyone stand up and follow your instructors to the port. All your supplies are ready and on the warships. Once you board, you can set sail immediately."

Zephyr was indeed a man of action. After giving the order, he began moving without giving Jon or the others a chance to think. The entire class had to quickly follow.

"What's going on? This old man is really playing this game. He's sending us out to fight pirates already?"

Borsalino muttered to Jon, "I've heard that new recruits usually don't get independent command opportunities. We haven't even graduated yet, and we're going to fight pirates. Don't they worry we'll suffer losses?"

Jon replied, "There should be people following us. If we really encounter pirates we can't handle, they'll step in."

He remembered that when Zephyr was an instructor, he often led his students into naval combat. It was during one of those missions that Zephyr lost his arm to Whitebeard's son.

Therefore, Jon wasn't too surprised by Zephyr's sudden decision.

Soon, they arrived at the port, where a large number of Navy soldiers had gathered. Two warships were docked in the sea, most likely for the exercise.

Zephyr had everyone stand in formation before saying, "I will now assign teams. Those whose names I call will stand on my left."

"Sakazuki, Vetus, Doberman, Polman, Jon…"

A total of twenty people quickly stood to the left.

"You twenty are in one team, the other twenty are in another team. Remember, you're working as a team. If anyone gets injured in either group, it will affect your score."

"Now, board the ships immediately!"

Sakazuki led the way, and Jon's team boarded the warship on the left, while the other group boarded the warship on the right.

"What a pity, I didn't get to be in Jon's group. The next month is going to be a lot less fun."

Borsalino looked disappointed. He had the best relationship with Jon and had hoped to be in the same group. But now, his wish wasn't granted.

Once Jon's group boarded the warship, they noticed a Navy Rear Admiral standing on board.

"You don't need to worry about me. I'm just here to record, I won't interfere with your actions."

The group exchanged puzzled glances, but considering this was an evaluation and someone was there to supervise and record, it seemed normal.

After a brief moment of surprise, Jon and the others gathered on the deck and began discussing.

"Who will be in charge of command, who will steer the ship, who will be the navigator, and who will cook?"

Even though they had been classmates for nearly half a year and were on good terms, this was a very important evaluation, and everyone took it seriously.

While the bonus points for winning would be the same for everyone, standing out during the process would certainly be more impressive.

But to win, they couldn't just act recklessly. They needed clear roles and good coordination. Otherwise, it would be impossible to defeat the other team.

After a long silence, no one spoke, until someone finally broke the silence.

"I'll take charge of steering the ship. I grew up on warships, and I have some experience. I've also learned from Zephyr, so I should be able to handle this ship. I just need someone to assist me."

Jon looked over. The speaker was Terry Cavery, a man with a low presence in the class. His strength wasn't outstanding, but he was good at theoretical knowledge and had been praised by Zephyr a few times.

With the first person speaking up, the group breathed a sigh of relief. Steering the ship was definitely a tough job, and many people were reluctant to take it on. Now that someone had volunteered, it was a good thing for everyone.

"I'll assist you, Cavery. We're familiar with each other." A shorter man spoke up.

"I'll be the cook. Before joining the Navy, I was a chef, so I won't let you down."

A slightly chubby man with a round face smiled and spoke. His name was Peveton, the oldest among the new recruits. He had a good reputation for his people skills and was well-liked by everyone in this batch.

"I'm good at observing the weather, though the weather at sea can change rapidly. I can only do my best."

Another man, tall and thin with a fair complexion, spoke up. His name was Mills, a definite academic elite. He ranked first in theoretical knowledge among this batch of new recruits.

With the roles of navigator, cook, and steersman decided, the role of commander remained unfilled. No one seemed willing to step up, clearly hesitant.

Being the overall commander of the twenty-person team wasn't something just anyone could take on. This role was special, very different from the others, and everyone here was proud. They weren't willing to submit to another classmate so easily.

At the same time, many people still wanted the position. After all, it was the position with the most visibility, but it was also the most prone to mistakes. Even those with confidence in their abilities hesitated.
